Check for updates

Has Apple released an update to MacOS? Find it by clicking the Apple button in the upper left corner of the screen, and then clicking About This Mac. You should stare at the “General” tab of the “About This Mac” window. If so, click the “Software Update” button, which will launch “System Preferences” to check for updates.

Optimize battery charging

If your MacBook is plugged into a power source most of the time, you definitely want to change this setting. MacOS can learn your charging habits to reduce battery aging. Click the battery icon on the menu bar at the top of the display, and select battery preferences from the drop-down menu. (If you don’t see the battery icon, go to “System Preferences”> “Energy Saver” and check the “Show battery status in the menu bar” box.) At the bottom of the list of options, select “Optimize battery charging.” Once the battery level reaches 80%, this will slow down your charging speed.

Set up Siri

Siri should be enabled by default, but if you prefer to use Siri only on iPhone, you can disable Siri by going to “System Preferences”> “Siri” and unchecking the “Enable Ask Siri” box.

Customize the Touch Bar

If you have the last Intel-based MacBook Pro model with a touch bar, please go to “System Preferences”> “Keyboard” and click the “Customize Touch Bar” button, then just drag to display Click the button to display the default view of the Touch Bar to the Touch Bar below the display. Don’t worry, they will cross the hinge from your display to the touch bar.

Sync folders via iCloud

To sync these two folders, go to System Preferences> Apple ID, then click on the left side of iCloud and check the checkbox next to iCloud Drive. Click the option next to iCloud Drive, and then select the Desktop and Documents folder.

Choose default browser

To set the default browser, go to “System Preferences”> “General” and select an option other than Safari for “Default Web Browser.”

Set scroll direction

If you want the two-finger swipe gesture to scroll vertically in the opposite way, go to “System Preferences”> “Trackpad” and click the “Scroll and Zoom” tab. Next, uncheck the Scroll direction: Natural box.

Mobile Dock

The Dock is at the bottom of the screen, but on a widescreen MacBook display, you might find it better to put it on the side. To move the Dock, go to System Preferences> Dock & Menu Bar, and select Left or Right for Position on Screen. There, you can also drag the slider to adjust the size of the Dock. You can also check the Auto Hide and Show Dock box to make it disappear from view when not in use.

Set app download tolerance

If you want to download applications from the web, not just from the Mac App Store, you need to tell MacOS to relax. Go to System Preferences> Security & Privacy, click the General tab, then click the lock in the lower left corner and enter your password to change it. Next, allow to choose an application store from the downloaded application, and determine the developer.

Using Apple’s built-in migration assistant feature, you can transfer data from your old MacBook or Time Machine backup to your new MacBook.

Back up your data and update to the latest MacOS

Use Time Machine to back up your Mac in case there are problems during the migration process. You can also take a quick look at your old Mac and delete anything you don’t want to take with you. After backing up the old Mac, the next step is to make sure that both Macs are up to date and running the latest version of MacOS. Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner, click About This Mac, and then click the Software Update button to check for updates.

Next, in order to use Migration Assistant, your old Mac needs a name. To check if it has a name, go to “System Preferences”> “Sharing” and check the “Computer Name” field at the top. Finally, connect the two computers to the power source.

Use Migration Assistant to transfer data

As long as you are running a newer MacOS, such as Big Sur or Monterey, you can connect to your Mac wirelessly. Just make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on for each computer and they are close to each other and connected to the same network.

After aligning the two Macs, open the migration assistant on the new Mac. Just search for it or find it in the utilities folder of your application folder. When the Migration Assistant opens, click Continue and enter your password. Once you do this, every program on your computer will be closed. Next, choose to backup from Mac, Time Machine, or start disk transfer, and click Continue.

On the old Mac, open the Migration Assistant, click “Continue”, select “Transfer to another Mac”, and click “Continue.”

Now, return to your new Mac and you will be asked if you want to migrate from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk. Select From another Mac, click Continue and make sure the security code is arranged on your Mac. The name of the old Mac will appear in the Migration Assistant window for the old Mac-select it and click Continue.

You will now see a list of items to be transferred: applications, user accounts, other files and folders, and computer and network settings. Check the items you want to take with you to your new Mac. If your new user account has the same name as the user account on the old Mac, you will be asked to rename or keep the name and replace the user account you set up on the new Mac with it.

Click Continue to start the migration. Depending on the amount of information you transfer, this process may take up to several hours. After the transfer process is over, close the migration assistant on both computers, and then jump to the new computer to view the transferred files.
