Long ago, OnePlus seemed like the natural “other” choice to the Google Pixel line. The days of “never settle” being the core ethos of this BBK-led giant are over. The OnePlus 12 embodies that more than any other product. Here’s what it’s like to use OnePlus for a long time As a Google Pixel user, moving the power button to the same side as the volume rocker really makes sense to me. The excellent alert slider is perfectly placed on the left side. I’ve been using this button a lot, and while Apple ditched it in favor of a multi-function button, I hope OnePlus continues to improve this toggle button and make it its own in the future. The screen is gorgeous. It’s definitely one of the biggest selling points, and coupled with the gentle curves, the whole package is great. I did forgo the pre-applied screen protector. It feels very cheap, and while I haven’t replaced it or used a case in the past few months, my screen has held up well without any marks, scuffs, or scratches. I’ve had a lot of test devices, but using the OnePlus 12 without a case was a wonderful experience.
Back to the display, it’s one of the best I’ve ever used. That’s it. It’s smooth as silk, huge, and the rich colors make everything look great. I also kept it at FHD resolution because, in my opinion, the QHD option isn’t enough without pixel peeping. It gets really bright.
Let’s be honest. OxygenOS isn’t OxygenOS anymore. OnePlus can try to tell us otherwise, but that’s a blatant fabrication. The spartan yet feature-rich AOSP-style version of the OnePlus 8 era is long gone. I can understand why this is one of the top reasons many longtime brand fans have ditched OnePlus.
ColorOS (because this is ColorOS) still needs to be slowly cultivated. Despite its obvious influence from iOS, my love for it has grown over the past few months. In fact, I’d like to see more unique options that help differentiate Oppo and OnePlus phones. I wish “Shelf” was an alternative to Discover, like Samsung’s News Feed. Maybe OnePlus could allow more app widgets in this section, because with so few preset options allowed, I find myself using it more often to quickly glance at some key daily information like weather and global time.
I’m surprised OnePlus didn’t try to force some AI features in, but to be honest, it feels pretty good without them. You can use Gemini, or use Magic Eraser in Google Photos, but there’s really nothing that can really improve the experience. Maybe Circle to Search would be nice. That being said, it’s nice to see OnePlus focusing on the core experience first.
Aside from the visuals, the day-to-day experience of using this phone is also great. Compared to the Pixel 8 Pro, the OnePlus 12 feels much faster. It’s super smooth and responsive. I didn’t see any lag even with a lot of apps loaded and installed. It’s been updated a lot since its release to clean up any bugs and issues, and the whole experience has been improved for speed and performance. In terms of raw power and smoothness, it’s easily comparable to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Real-world lifespan
One of the highlights of the OnePlus 12 is its excellentOnePlus 12 battery life. This huge 5,400mAh battery
means that the phone can easily meet the needs of high-intensity use for a whole day on a single charge. When I use the phone as my primary or only device, I’m amazed at how little it needs to be charged.
I love not having to think about charging or when I’ll have to charge it next. I can charge it randomly and use it for days. I thought this would go down over time, but it’s still a beast. I’ve rarely experienced a full day with less than 20% battery. I can count on one hand how many times this has happened in the last few months.
Even the standby time is impressive. Let the phone sit and the OnePlus phone batterywill slowly drain with almost no impact. Overnight, theOnePlus 12 batterylife will only decrease by 1 or 2%. I haven’t used an Android phone that can achieve this in a long time.
Using the camera
OnePlus 12 OnePlus has historically lagged behind Samsung and Google in terms of camera quality, but the OnePlus 12’s camera system has improved significantly. Before I get into the details of image quality, I have to admit that Hasselblad color tuning is my favorite feature on any modern smartphone. It has also improved significantly since the collaboration was first confirmed in 2021. While I do miss the clean software aesthetic of Oppo’s previous OnePlus efforts, you can see why the merger has benefited the brands’ hardware quality. While it’s hard to call the OnePlus 12 a “flagship killer,” it’s one of the most impressive smartphones released in 2024.
