Nubia Redmagic 8 Pro review: A cut-throat gaming success

For a few years now, Nubia’s Redmagic sub-brand has been offering some of the best value-for-money gaming phones on the market. While the Asus ROG Phone range may be the biggest and best in this particular smartphone space, phones like the Redmagic 6S Pro and 7 Pro offer incredible value for money.
Pros Striking new design, fast performance,Long ZTE Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro batterylife
With the Redmagic 8 Pro, the brand has taken its core strengths, tackled its weaknesses, and wrapped it all up in a striking new design. Even if you’re not a particularly avid gamer, this is one of the most capable sub-£600 phones on the market.
To be fair, the Redmagic 8 Pro is another top-tier gaming phone, but the interesting development here is a hint of refinement amid all those mesmerizing specs. The dedicated remappable gaming ‘trigger button’ returns, giving the phone a key gaming advantage. New this time around is a boxier design that’s almost borderless, and there’s no selfie notch to get in the way either.
The Redmagic team even found time to address criticism of its camera technology, with a more competitive main sensor ensuring that photos are pleasant in most situations.ZTE Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro battery
Nubia Redmagic 8 Pro review: Price and competition
The key attribute of any Redmagic phone (and what allows us to forgive its many rough edges and clunky decorations) is its absolutely amazing value.
The Redmagic 8 Pro is a top-of-the-line (in most respects) Android phone, starting at just £579. Add to that the fact that it comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and I’m hesitant to call this model the best of its class.
I never thought a gaming phone would do this, but the Redmagic 8 Pro comes closer to the full-screen ideal than any other phone I’ve used.
Strictly speaking, Nubia’s bold design approach isn’t all that gamer-friendly. The sharp edges and flat sides aren’t particularly comfortable to hold during long gaming sessions, especially as this is one of the heavier phones in the Redmagic range.
Besides being less comfortable to hold, there’s no real forehead or chin, which means you don’t get the dual front-facing speakers you get on the Asus ROG Phone and Lenovo Legion Phone series. The earpiece works well for that, but the bottom-mounted speakers are a little easy to block out when gaming. Sound is plenty loud and clear on both, though.
