Motorola RAZR V3 review – the best phone of 2004

Before the RAZR revival, let’s look back at the phone that established the RAZR brandThis year, Motorola is reviving its most successful phone ever: the RAZR. Originally launched in 2004, the trendsetting phone sold more than 50 million units between 2004 and 2006 and started a “thin phone” revolution that arguably continues to this day. However, the device was also a curse for Motorola; its success led the company to release several upgraded versions that didn’t perform as well as expected
Motorola RAZR V3: Design and DisplayEven in 2019, the RAZR V3 looks and feels futuristic. The use of a metal casing gives the device a premium feel, and the iconic flip mechanism (once a common sight in the world of mobile phones) makes a pleasant “click” sound when closed. Once closed, the RAZR V3 fits easily into your pocket, and it’s so thin and light that you’ll forget it’s even there.
When the phone is closed, the front is dominated by a 96 x 80 pixel color secondary screen that lets you see the time and date, as well as caller information. It also serves as a viewfinder for the phone’s VGA camera, which we’ll get to later. The volume rocker and shortcut keys are located on the side of the topmost part of the phone (the part with the screen open), making them difficult to reach whether the phone is closed or open. There’s no power button on the side, instead it’s on the “end call” key.

Flip the V3 over and you’ll find the speaker as well as a removable panel that reveals the removable Motorola RAZR V3 Battery
(remember that?) and SIM card slot. There’s no expandable storage on this phone, and it’s limited to 5MB of internal memory.Open the phone and you’ll find a keypad and a 2.2-inch 176 x 220 LCD screen. The former is made from a single slab of aluminum, which sounds like a texting addict’s worst nightmare, but it’s not. Despite the lack of “proper” buttons, the V3’s keyboard is a joy to use — provided you can get used to T9 predictive text, of course.
Motorola RAZR V3: Software and PerformanceMotorola RAZR V3 Review – Best Phones of 2004, Best Phones of 2019 Like most phones of the early 2000s, the RAZR V3 ran a proprietary software system unique to Motorola phones — this was long before apps and downloads became common, and while it was possible to surf the web and access email, this was not a smartphone.
While we judge modern smartphones on overall speed — which is usually related to the processor and the amount of available RAM — the RAZR V3 was born in an era when we were more concerned with usability. Moving around the phone was fairly easy, though there was a certain amount of lag when switching between features. Browsing the web was a pain, with pages taking a long time to load on pre-3G connections. Games were also slow, which just goes to show how low our expectations were in 2004. You definitely didn’t want to give up the point-and-shoot camera for the V3, as the first model could only take VGA-resolution photos. They looked terrible, and in 2004, the phone was more about sharing photos via MMS than blowing them up to poster size like modern smartphones do now. The phone could also record video, but the quality was poor and again only suitable for sharing via MMS.
The RAZR V3’s 680mAh Motorola RAZR V3 battery
provided 250 hours of standby time and nearly 7 hours of talk time.
Motorola RAZR V3: Review
If we were to judge the RAZR V3 by modern standards, it would rate poorly; phones have evolved dramatically over the past 15 years, and we expect more from these devices today. The RAZR V3 was groundbreaking in 2004, but can you really imagine yourself using a phone with a VGA camera, no apps, and even no WiFi support in 2019?
