As a company, Micromax has been doing well so far and is the largest local handset vendor in India by market share. While many factors have contributed to this success, perhaps the most important is its rich portfolio of products that not only boast some unique features but are also considered good value for money. Nothing highlights this more than the company’s two recent major launches, the Canvas 2 A110 and the Canvas HD A116. The latter, in particular, created a stir in the smartphone space not only in India but also internationally upon its launch – and for good reason. Who can ignore the promise of delivering high-end specs at an affordable price… and that’s exactly what the Canvas HD delivers.
Design and HardwareThe dual-SIM Micromax Canvas 4 is designed in a similar style to countless other candy-bar touchscreen phones and doesn’t really get our hearts racing. Available in grey and white, it’s made primarily of plastic but it goes the extra mile in terms of build thanks to an anodized aluminum band with chamfered edges. Not only does this give the device a nice build and a reassuring heft, it also adds an air of class to the overall look and doubles up as an antenna for wireless communications. The camera lens protrudes slightly from the curve, with its 13-megapixel configuration below. There’s a chrome Micromax logo slightly in the center, while the bottom has more Micromax branding and speaker holes. As usual, there’s a 3.5mm audio jack on the top and a micro USB port on the bottom. The back panel can be pried off to reveal a pair of SIM card slots, a microSD slot, and a removable battery. It’s not like we haven’t seen better-built phones, but the Canvas 4 is indeed the best-built device in the Micromax series, which bodes well for this phone’s performance andMicromax Canvas 4 BatteryLife Performance
The processor is another point of contention for the Canvas 4, as it uses the same 1.2 GHz MediaTek MT6589 quad-core chip as its predecessor, so it doesn’t bring a major upgrade, at least in that regard. It also comes with 1GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX44 GPU. It’s no surprise, then, that the phone performs similarly to the Canvas HD – don’t expect anything spectacular, but it runs pretty smoothly for the most part and handles everyday tasks reasonably well. Internal storage is significantly beefed up, with 16GB available, 10GB of which is free, and you can cram in more space via the microSD slot. USB On-The-Go is another feature we like, and it’s covered along with other connectivity options like Wi-Fi, wireless display mirroring, and Bluetooth. As for the Micromax Canvas 4 battery life, the removable 2,000 mAh Micromax smartphone battery
pack offers enough juice to keep the smartphone alive for a working day – and that’s no surprise, bad or otherwise. At first glance, the specs-versus-price battle seems to be going faster than Micromax has. Still, we’d like to reserve judgement until we can evaluate some of the above options in person. However, before declaring the Canvas 4 a failure, perhaps there’s another angle we should consider. As a brand, Micromax has managed to carve a name for itself in the competitive Indian market, and that in itself is no mean feat. We repeat one of our favorite maxims, with great power comes great responsibility, and we hope the company lives up to its customers’ trust by providing top-notch service and support – a key area of focus for many buyers. Starting with a blank canvas, trying to surprise them once again… with something delightful… is its next flagship. As for the Canvas 4 – it may not be for Canvas HD users, but it’s still a very capable smartphone. A price cut would certainly help, but that’s true for everything, right?
