Huawei MatePad 11 hands-on review: A powerful and versatile mid-range HarmonyOS tablet

Huawei has done a good job with the build quality of the MatePad 11, which is only available in matte grey in the UK – although you can get it in island blue and olive green elsewhere. It has a familiar rectangular shape, measuring 253.8mm wide, 165.3mm deep, 7.25mm thick and weighing 485g. There are small bezels around the screen, and Huawei claims an 86% screen-to-body ratio, although our calculations put it at 82.9%. Four speakers output good quality sound through a pair of grilles on either side of the screen (in landscape mode). There’s a MicroSD card tray to add to the 128GB of internal storage, of which 17GB is available out of the box.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset seemed plenty fast enough when I tested the MatePad 11 with 6GB of RAM. The rear camera is 13MP f/1.8 and the front camera is 8MP f/2.0 for video calls. Photography options are nothing special, though the rear camera can shoot 4K video.
The 10.95-inch IPS screen is stunning. It’s sharp and bright, with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels (275ppi) and a refresh rate of 120Hz. Huawei also offers a reading mode that pushes everything into grayscale, which is a big plus for me. However, the screen is quite reflective, which can make navigation a little tricky at times. Huawei says the 7,250mAhHuawei MatePad 11 Battery
lasts 12 hours, and in daily use, I found it to handle a typical writing, browsing, and streaming workload, as well as music and video streaming after get off work. The downside is that the 22.5W charging is fairly slow.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test the MatePad 11 and its dedicated keyboard, as Huawei sent me the keyboard for another device. That’s a shame, as it meant I couldn’t use the full 2-in-1 setup to write this review or get other writing-based work done. As for the tablet itself, the MatePad 11 is well-made, has a long battery life, and decent speakers. The all-inclusive price for the tablet, keyboard and stylus (currently £399.99 in the UK) isn’t too high. The biggest downside is probably HarmonyOS, which isn’t for everyone, especially when it comes to app support.
