Windows 11 has been launched in stages. I believe that many of my friends have already downloaded it, but when some people are installing, the system prompts an installation error, which makes people very distressed! Let’s see if the following is the problem you have encountered!
If you try to install Windows 11 Insider Preview or use the Microsoft PC Health Check application and receive an error message “This PC cannot run Windows 11”, your system may not have two basic security settings turned on: Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 . (These are the other two things you must do before downloading Windows 11.) Many modern computers and processing chips from Intel and AMD have these features built in, and now all machines running Windows 11 require these two features.
After downloading the PC Health Check application, you can click Check Now to start the scanning process. The application will tell you whether your computer supports Windows 11, or what it lacks, you can click to view all results for more information.
If your machine is new enough to support both at the same time, it is usually easy to enable TPM (short for Trusted Platform Module) and secure boot. No special skills are required, you just need to click the menu. If you have never heard of the term “BIOS menu”, you may feel uncomfortable, but don’t be afraid. With a little patience, any beginner can do this.
Some people will ask what is TPM and secure boot?
The TPM microchip is a small device called a secure cryptographic processor. Some TPMs are virtual or firmware variants, but as a chip, the TPM is connected to your motherboard during construction and is designed to enhance hardware security during computer startup. Since 2016, TPM has been a mandatory technology on Windows machines, so machines older than this may not have the necessary hardware or firmware. Previously, Microsoft required all models of original equipment manufacturers to be able to run Windows 10 to ensure that these machines support TPM 1.2. TPM 2.0 is the latest version required.
TPM is disputed between security experts and the government. The updated and enabled TPM is a powerful preventive measure against firmware attacks. Firmware attacks have steadily increased and attracted the attention of Microsoft. However, it also allows remote attestation (authorized parties can see when you make certain changes to your computer), and may limit the type of software your computer can run. TPM-equipped machines are generally not shipped in countries/regions that prohibit Western encryption. China uses its nationally regulated alternative, TCM. In Russia, the use of TPM is only allowed with government permission.
Secure boot is a function in computer software that controls which operating systems are allowed to be activated on the computer. For Windows machines, this is both good and bad. On the one hand, it can prevent certain types of intrusive malware from taking over your computer and is a core defense against ransomware.
On the other hand, it prevents you from installing a second operating system on your machine, giving you two options when you start your computer for the first time. So, for example, if you want to try the Linux operating system, secure boot may prevent you. Secure Boot also plays a role in preventing Windows piracy.
