Which great multisport device is right for you?If you want a true adventure watch, the Garmin Fenix 5 series has you covered. It includes the flagship Fenix 5, the smaller Fenix 5s, and the largest and most feature-rich of the three, the Fenix 5X.Garmin Watch BatteryLifeGarmin Fenix 5 Watch Battery
You can get about two weeks of use on a full charge. If you turn on GPS while running or cycling, you can get about 20 hours of use, but if you turn on all the features and connected technology like Bluetooth, it may be less.
Oddly, despite its larger size, theGarmin Fenix 5X watch battery
doesn’t last as long as the regular 5. You still get 20 hours of battery life with GPS turned on, but it only lasts up to 12 days in smartwatch mode. Beyond that, in UltraTrac mode, the Garmin Fenix 5X watch battery
Beyond that, they both track your heart rate and activity. Those stats all funnel into Garmin Connect, which gives you a deep dive into all the metrics – even if we think the mobile app needs an overhaul. You get resting heart rate, VO2 max, training load, training status, training effect, automatic sleep, and step tracking. There’s so much information on these watches that you might not know what to do with it all.
Where the two watches differ is in the maps. Garmin has loaded the 5X with full-color topographic maps. You also get cycling and golf maps, and 16GB of storage, so you can load your own maps if you want.
Garmin Fenix 5XWhile the regular Fenix 5 offers GPX routes through Garmin Basecamp, the 5X takes advantage of its mapping features to offer more intuitive turn-by-turn navigation on the watch, something the 5 can’t do. You can also use these mapping features to set up routes, either manually or automatically built based on your location, which we found to be both easy and intuitive. However, if you want to navigate on a map, it’s a bit of a hassle due to the lack of a touchscreen — but it works.
Running Tips
While the Garmin 5 series does a good job of tracking a number of different sports, it excels at running. Both offer the same standard information. Information like speed, distance, heart rate, and more are all available. The watch even tells you how much time you need to recover after each session.
But if you just want a running watch and don’t care too much about mapping, then the 5 might be a better fit for you based on size alone. As a running device, the 5X is pretty heavy, so keep that in mind, especially if you have smaller wrists.only lasts 35 hours, well below the 60 hours the 5 gets in UltraTrac mode. It’s odd that a watch with more features and a larger size would have a shorter Garmin Fenix 5X watch battery life, but that’s the way it is.
The regular 5 is already a pretty big watch. The 5X weighs in at around 98g, which is significantly heavier than the 5’s weight (85g). All of that weight comes from the 5X’s larger 51mm case, which is a full 4mm larger than the 5’s case.Garmin Fenix 5As for heart rate, both use the same Garmin Elevate technology. In testing, we found the heart rate technology to be good until we moved to more intense training, at which point it struggled to keep up with the chest strap.
ConclusionBefore choosing between the Fenix 5X and Fenix 5, you need to ask yourself a very important question: How important is mapping to you? If mapping is very important, then you should go with the 5X without hesitation. It’s a great adventure watch that, while expensive, does everything you need it to.
However, if mapping isn’t that important to you, then there’s no reason to spend more money on a feature you don’t really enjoy. In that case, you’re better off with the Fenix 5. Either way, you’re getting the same great workout tracking, great running features, and enough durability to handle any adventure.
