Are you looking for a smartphone that integrates Google Photos, Chrome, Gmail and Google Drive? If so, Pixel may be a good choice for you. Google offers many iterations of its Pixel phones, including Pixel 4A and Pixel 5, as well as the new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which are now equipped with the company’s in-house Tensor chip.
Pixel phones are known for taking beautiful photos. But it’s not just having great cameras and luxurious hardware: the software and services associated with the phone are also important. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Unlimited storage space for Google Photos
One of the reasons to buy a Pixel is the unlimited storage space in Google Photos. Unlike other non-Pixel phones, Pixel phones do not have a data limit for backing up photos to the cloud. The photos you take on the Pixel will be saved in their original quality and will not be compressed automatically to save space.
Later Pixel phones, such as the recently released Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G, allowed unlimited photos to be uploaded with compressed storage saver quality. Google outlines the rules for each Pixel phone on this support page.
Unfortunately, it seems that the 2020 Pixel phone may be the last phone to gain the advantage of unlimited storage. According to media reports such as The Verge and Tom’s Guide, Google does not intend to extend this advantage to the next wave of Pixel phones.
No bloated software
The threat of unwanted applications, services, and often redundant software features continues to plague most Android phones subsidized by US wireless carriers. This is not the case with Google Pixel phones. What you get is the original Android operating system originally designed by Google, which is not obscured by weird skins, proprietary overlays, or weird user interfaces.
The latest Android operating system update
In addition to unrestricted photo storage, Google also promised to update its Pixel phones as a priority. Whenever a new Android operating system version or security patch is released, it will arrive at Pixels first. This includes new features that are independent of full operating system updates.
Google Fi is always an option
Although not a strong force in the wireless carrier market, Google does provide its own cellular service for mobile devices. Called Google Fi, this MVNO-style system provides a pay-as-you-go data plan. It also uses technology that can seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks during voice calls.
All Pixel phones have a version specifically designed to run on Google Fi. These phones are also unlocked, so you can port them to other carriers as needed.
However, when choosing Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, things become more complicated. Google sells three types: Verizon, Google Fi (unlocked version) and unlocked version (no specific operator). The model without a designated operator will be applicable to all major U.S. operator networks. In other words, not all of them are fully compatible with every operator’s 5G network.
Suppress spam
If you are regularly attacked by a large number of unpopular scams or shady marketing calls, then you will find this Pixel feature very compelling. The Pixel Call Screen function in the mobile app works with Google Assistant to prevent robots from calling you. Together, they can prevent unknown callers from ringing your phone, or block incoming calls for you in real time.
