Sony Vaio T13 review – A stylish and affordable Ultrabook

Bottom Line: The Sony Vaio T13 is a budget ultrabook, but overall a nice, solid, and fast machine. It has its drawbacks, of course, as corners were cut to meet the low price, though I don’t think any of these are real deal breakersI’m sure you’ve all heard of Sony’s VAIO. In the past, VAIOs were among my favorite laptops, but they were pretty expensive.
With that in mind, you might think that Sony’s first ultrabook, the Vaio T13, would also be expensive. But that’s not the case, as Sony’s T series is aimed at regular users, while the S and Z series focus on business customers.
Update: Want to save some money on the Vaio T13? This article will tell you where to find discounted ones, so it’s definitely worth a look.
That’s why the Sony Vaio T13 starts at around $700, making it one of the cheapest ultrabooks you can buy right now. The T13 retains the style of the higher-end Vaio series, retains its build quality to a certain extent, comes with plenty of ports, good performance, and a decent keyboard and
Sony Vaio T13 battery.
But are these enough to make the T13 a suitable choice? You will find out after reading the review below.
Design and AppearanceI remember talking to a Sony official not long ago, and he told me that they put a lot of effort into making their ultrabooks look stunning. That is indeed the case with the Vaio T13, which is one of the simplest, yet most beautiful machines in its class.
Weighing about 3.5 pounds and measuring 0.7 inches thick, the Sony Vaio T13 is not the lightest or thinnest 13.3-inch ultrabook. But it is still quite portable.
All the ports are lined up on the side, and Sony did not cut corners. On the left side are the power supply, a larger cooling grille, and two USB ports. On the right side are the headphone/microphone jack, card reader, HDMI and VGA video outputs, and a Lan adapter. The status LEDs are located on the front edge, just below the trackpad, and they are quite hidden.
Turn the laptop upside down, and you will find that the Vaio T13 is one of the very few ultrabooks with a removable battery, and easy access to the internal components, allowing you to easily upgrade the memory or replace the hard drive. This is something many people might appreciate. You’ll also notice another peculiarity of this test unit: the bottom is easily scratched, which is a sign of the laptop’s lack of reliability.
Lift the lid and you’ll find more aluminum, covering the palm rest and the area around the keyboard. It looks nice, looks durable, and is certainly much sturdier than the metal plate on the lid, as it barely flexes in daily use. The power switch and a couple of extra buttons and LEDs are located on top of the keyboard, while other laptops have a simpler interior design, but these are actually quite handy and you’ll get used to them. ScreenThere’s a 13.3-inch glossy screen on the Vaio T13, though the thicker silver bezels around it make it look a bit small.
Now, the display itself isn’t great, but let’s not forget that this Sony ultrabook is a budget ultrabook. It uses a regular TN panel and a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, with subpar brightness and contrast, and pretty dull colors.
The screen is actually terrible Keyboard and touchpadWhen it comes to keyboards, Vaios used to be the standard in the industry, but that’s not the case with the T13.
The keys are of decent size and well-spaced, though the gaps between them are a little too big. However, the overall feedback is poor, with a small dip that will make you miss a lot of keystrokes, at least until you get used to it. Also, Sony decided to go with a standard non-backlit keyboard on its ultrabook in an attempt to improve the typing experience, but the end result is certainly not that great. As for the trackpad, this one is much better. It feels nice and is fairly accurate, though it can get a little shaky at times. The clickpad isn’t very stiff, so clicks register smoothly, and it also handles gestures and palm rejection well. One minor downside, though, is that I wish there was a bigger trackpad, as this one does feel a little cramped.
Hardware and PerformanceHardware-wise, the Vaio T13 is powered by either the older Intel Sandy Bridge or the newer Intel Ivy Bridge ULV platforms. My test unit is probably the cheapest configuration, with a Core i3-2367M CPU, 4 GB RAM, and a 320 GB regular hard drive plus a 32 GB mSATA SSD for caching. Better-equipped versions will offer Core i5 and i7 Ivy Bridge processors, though.
My test unit performed just fine for everyday tasks, though heavy multitasking can make it rather sluggish. However, for browsing, editing videos, playing some light games, and watching clips, it performed just fine. Sony Vaio T13 Battery LifeThe 3-cell 45 Wh Sony Vaio T13 battery inside this device is rated for 7+ hours of battery life, but in real-world use, the laptop only lasted a maximum of four and a half hours on average in balanced mode with the screen set to 70%. With light computer use and the screen fully dimmed, it could go over five hours.
On the other hand, I do expect the more powerful configuration to only average around four hours on a single charge.

Aorus 15 XE5 review: A compact QHD gaming laptop with Thunderbolt 4

Energy guzzler. With the Aorus 15 XE5, Gigabyte has introduced another 15.6-inch compact gaming notebook to the market. Among other things, this laptop shines with its impressive performance (both in gaming and non-gaming applications) and its ability to accommodate two PCIe 4.0 SSDs. The Gigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 features a black plastic chassis with a smooth, matte finish. There are no extravagant design elements to the device. The thin bezels around the display add an elegant touch to the laptop. The laptop’s design is further accentuated by the illuminated Aorus logo on the back of the lid. Once you remove the bottom panel, you can get a peek at the battery (screwed on, not glued on) and the rest of the internals. Keyboard

This gaming laptop comes with a chiclet keyboard with a number pad. The smooth keys offer a moderate travel distance and a distinct actuation point. The keyboard does not flex while typing. Each key is individually illuminated and has two brightness levels. Overall, Gigabyte has offered a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use. Performance – Plenty of power thanks to Alder Lake and AmpereThe Gigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 is a powerful 15.6-inch laptop that performs well in a variety of demanding usage scenarios. In addition to the review configuration, Gigabyte also offers two other models: one with an RTX 3080 Ti laptop (Aorus 15 YE5) and another with an RTX 3060 laptop (Aorus 15 KE5).
ProcessorThe Core i7-12700H processor (Alder Lake) contains six performance cores (Hyper-Threading, 2.4 to 4.7 GHz) and eight efficiency cores (no Hyper-Threading, 1.8 to 3.5 GHz), for a total of 20 logical CPU cores.
When the laptop is powered by Gigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 Laptop battery
power, the clock speed is significantly reduced. Overall, the Core i7 in the Aorus 15 XE5 delivered slightly above average benchmark results. Power Management – The XE5 requires too much powerGigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 Laptop
Energy ConsumptionThe Aorus 15 XE5 consumes too much power when idle, consuming around 31 to 46 watts, sometimes even up to 80 watts in the worst cases. Comparing the XE5 to its competitors gives a rough idea of how much power an Optimus-enabled laptop should consume when idle. This high power consumption is likely due to a bug. The problem persists even when disabling the AI Boost feature. So we’ll have to wait and see if Gigabyte is able to fix this with software or a BIOS update.
Throughout the stress test and The Witcher 3 test, the laptop’s power consumption remained stable and at a level that’s normal for the hardware. The included charger has more than enough capacity to power the laptop and was able to handle momentary spikes that exceeded its output rating (240 watts).

Laptops with the Longest Battery Life – Summer 2024 Review

Apple MacBook Pro 14The laptop with the longestApple MacBook Pro 14 batterylife we’ve tested is the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M3, 2023). This premium workstation’s battery life lasts for more than 15 hours with light use. That’s enough to get you through a full day, or even two, easily, depending on your workload. It has a crisp Mini LED display, a roomy keyboard, and an easy-to-use tactile touchpad. Ports include three USB/Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1, and a full-size SD card reader. You can configure it with either the M3 Pro or Max SoC (system-on-chip); both are fast enough to handle demanding workloads like video editing, 3D graphics and animation, and programming. There’s also a basic M3 chip option if you don’t need as much processing power but still want “pro” features like a display and upward-firing speakers.
A Windows alternative is the Dell XPS 16 (2024). It’s also a high-end workstation laptop with plenty of processing power and good battery life, though the hardware configuration will affect its longevity. Hardware options include Intel Core 7 or 9 CPUs, up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, and either 120Hz FHD+ IPS or 90Hz 4K+ OLED panels. The latter has full DCI P3 color space coverage, making it a great choice for color-critical work at the expense of battery life. The SSD is user-replaceable, so you can easily increase the amount or upgrade to better-performing memory or a faster drive. While this laptop is very well-made, unfortunately both the keyboard layout and touchpad design take a while to get comfortable using; the borderless design of the keycaps can easily lead to accidental inputs, and you can’t see the edge of the touchpad due to the front deck design.
Apple MacBook Air 13
Our best mid-range and high-end pick is the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2024). Like the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M3, 2023) above, it’s a high-end, well-built model with a Apple MacBook Air 13 battery that can easily get you through a typical eight-hour workday. Its base M3 SoC isn’t as powerful as the M3 Pro or Max versions, so it’s better suited for lighter general productivity tasks like text processing, web browsing, and video playback. It can handle some demanding work, like video editing, but you won’t get as good an experience as the Pro models.
The user experience is great, with a bright Retina display, a comfortable keyboard, and a huge tactile trackpad. The main downside is that it only has two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports; this supports two external displays, but only when the laptop is closed. Apple is still selling the M2-based Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022) as a more affordable option, at $100 less. The M3 model has only a few minor upgrades, including Wi-Fi 6E, slightly better performance, and support for two external displays (when the laptop is closed).
For Windows users, we recommend the HP Spectre x360 14 (2024). This 14-inch 2-in-1 offers an excellent user experience, with great build quality, a large tactile trackpad, and a crisp 2.8K OLED display, while still delivering all-day battery life for light use. It has a better port selection than the MacBook Air, with one USB-A, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and it also supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, which offers faster connection speeds and lower latency if you have a compatible modem. Its Meteor Lake Intel processor handles general productivity tasks without a problem, but isn’t quite as well suited to more demanding workloads.
Lenovo Yoga 7i 16
If you want a more modest mid-range model, check out the Lenovo Yoga 7i 16 (2023). It has a large 16-inch display that’s perfect for split-screen multitasking, and since it’s a 2-in-1, you can flip the screen around and use it as a tablet. The Lenovo Yoga 7i 16 battery lasts a little over 12 hours with light use, and charges over USB-C. You can choose between an FHD+ or QHD+ panel; we recommend the latter because it looks sharper and is brighter to combat glare. You can configure it with Intel’s 13th-generation U-series and P-series CPUs, which are fast enough for general productivity tasks like text processing, web browsing, presentations, and spreadsheets.
The keyboard feels nice to type on and also comes with a number pad, which is great for people who crunch a lot of numbers. It also has a fingerprint sensor and a facial recognition camera for quick logins. Port-wise, there are two USB-A, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, one HDMI, and a MicroSD card reader. The only downsides are that the webcam image has an unnatural tint and the microphone picks up some background noise. Finally, the display supports stylus input, but you may need to buy the stylus separately, depending on the model. The stylus uses Wacom AES technology and supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt.

Dell Alienware m18 R2 (2024) Laptop Review

The Dell Alienware m18 R2 (2024) is a mid-range gaming laptop. It replaces the Dell Alienware m18 (2023). This 2024 model features Intel 14th-generation CPUs (Raptor Lake update) up to the Core i9-14900HX, and NVIDIA 40-series GPUs, from the RTX 4060 to the RTX 4090, the latter with a maximum TGP (total graphics power) of 175W. Memory and storage max out at 64GB and 8TB (in RAID 0), respectively. Display options remain the same as its predecessor, including 165Hz QHD+ and 480Hz FHD+ panels; both support G-SYNC variable refresh rate technology. It has a 1080p webcam, Wi-Fi 7 support, and a 97Wh Dell Alienware m18 R2  battery. The keyboard switches are customizable; you can choose between scissor switches or ultra-thin (clicky) CherryMX mechanical switches. Ports include three USB-A, three USB-C (two with Thunderbolt 4 support), one HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, Mini DisplayPort, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack The Dell Alienware m18 R2 is an excellent gaming laptop. Its high-performance Intel 14th-generation CPU and NVIDIA RTX 40-series GPU enable high and consistent frame rates in demanding games at 1080p or 1440p, resulting in a smooth and responsive gaming experience. You can choose between a 480Hz FHD+ or 165Hz QHD+ display; both have fast response times for crisp images and support for variable refresh rates to reduce screen tearing. It has plenty of ports, including an Ethernet port to ensure a reliable internet connection when gaming online. RAM and storage are user-upgradeable, so you can add more later. Thermal throttling is minimal, but the laptop can get hot and loud under load. Compared to other laptopsThe Dell Alienware m18 R2 is an excellent gaming laptop with a solid build, a fast display, plenty of ports, and great performance. It’s also one of the few laptops on the market with customizable keyboard switches. However, its bulky design and weight make it not recommended for use on the go, and it can get very hot and noisy under load. The Dell Alienware m18 R2 has an excellent keyboard. The keyboard on our unit features CherryMX ultra-thin mechanical switches. You can also buy the laptop with a scissor-switch keyboard, which we expect to be similar to the one on the Dell Alienware m18 (2023). The layout feels spacious and easy to adapt to, and it’s the same no matter which key switches you use. The keys are stable, have a good amount of travel, and require very little force to actuate. They offer a unique tactile and audio feedback; you can hear it here. Both keyboards (scissor-switch and mechanical) feature per-key RGB backlighting, which you can customize through the Alienware Command Center app. Brightness can be adjusted using the F7 shortcut key  Dell Alienware m18 R2 Battery life (video playback)3.1 hours. The port selection on the Dell Alienware m18 R2 is excellent. All three USB-A ports support USB 3.2 Gen 1 data transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps. The USB-A next to the Ethernet port supports PowerShare, a feature that lets you set how much Dell Alienware m18 R2 battery power a connected device can draw while charging. For example, if you set it to 25%, charging will stop when you’ve used 25% of the laptop’s total  laptop’s battery. You can also turn charging off completely. The two USB-Cs on the back both support Thunderbolt 4 (up to 40Gbps data transfer speeds and two external 4k displays at 60Hz) and DisplayPort 1.4, while the USB-C on the right side of the laptop supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 data transfer speeds. The HDMI is a true HDMI 2.1 port that can output a 4k @ 120Hz signal. The Ethernet controller is an Intel Killer E5000 5G.

Lenovo ThinkPad T410 Review

Lenovo proved at CES in January that its reputation when it comes to the latest generation of laptop technology is well-deserved. The company’s lineup ranges from small to large, catering to everyone from casual travelers to hardcore business users. There are also one or two machines aimed at gaming and multimedia users, although at first glance you might not guess that the ThinkPad T410 falls into that category. That machine, along with the T410, T510, and W510, all received a major upgrade last month with Intel’s latest Core i5 and Core i7 processors, injecting much-needed life into the traditionally sturdy and plain ThinkPad line. The T410 we’re reviewing today is a ThinkPad through and through. From top to bottom and edge to edge, there’s no doubt that this is a member of the iconic ThinkPad family. It’s finished in matte black and its styling is a little bland, but it’s built to last. Sounds like a ThinkPad, right? It has the same exterior that loyal Lenovo users know and love, but it’s the selection of components inside that we’re really interested in. Can the ThinkPad T410 maintain its all-business status while still performing at a level acceptable to multimedia enthusiasts?LenovoThinkPadT410 Laptop BatteryThose expecting the T410 to be a dramatic change from the T400 and T400s we reviewed will be sorely disappointed. Almost everything from the chassis to the keyboard to the trackpad is typical ThinkPad, but the Core i5 CPU (the Core i5-540M, to be specific) is a stark departure from last year’s ThinkPad options. It’s new on the inside, old on the outside — will that be enough to convince existing ThinkPad owners to upgrade? More importantly, will it entice any new customers who have so far resisted buying a machine with a blue “Enter” key? Read on for our full review to find out.

HP Envy 16 laptop review: A versatile dream machine

The HP Envy 16 is an excellent, high-end laptop that I fell in love with almost immediately. Spending more time with the Envy 16 only reinforces my belief that this is probably one of the best all-around choices. Whether it’s for work, personal use, or casual gaming, the Envy 16 has you covered.
Inside, you’ll find powerful specs matched to a sleek aluminum chassis that give this laptop an overall premium vibe. It’s equipped with a 12th-generation Intel Core i9 CPU, an incredible 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM to run new games with ease. Of course, powerful specs mean nothing without a gorgeous display, but luckily the HP Envy 16 fits that bill as well, with a stunning 16-inch 4K OLED display.
Is the Envy 16 one of the best gaming laptops? Probably not, especially when compared to laptops designed for gaming, like the Envy 16’s gaming competitor, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 . But compared to some of the best high-end laptops built for content creators, like Dell’s Precision 5470, the Envy 16 could easily fool you into thinking it was built just for gaming. It’s cool to the touch — sturdy, but not too heavy. It looks beautiful on a desk, and it’s also good for the environment. It’s a win-win-win.
As Billy Mays would say, “But wait, there’s more!” Once you open the Envy 16, you’re greeted by a stunning 16-inch display with thin side bezels that aren’t too noticeable except for the larger bottom bezel. The island-style keyboard is sandwiched between two speakers, and the word “Envy” is printed in a modern box font.
Flip the Envy 16 over, and there’s a long fan vent that takes up almost half of the bottom of the laptop. Two thin rubber strips (one on the front of the laptop, the other near the hinge) hold the laptop up, giving all that hot air some breathing room. Then, on the left and right corners of the front, you’ll find two speaker grilles. HP ENVY 16 PerformanceAs a reminder, the HP Envy 16 is equipped with a 12th-generation Intel Core i9-12900H CPU, 32GB of DDR5 RAM (plus 6GB of dedicated VRAM), and a 2TB TLC M.2 SSD.
With up to 32GB of RAM, it’s no surprise that the Envy 16 was able to handle everything I threw at it. I fired up YouTube and Netflix on Google Chrome and played a video each, with about 30 other tabs open from different websites. The fans were barely audible, the laptop didn’t get hot at all, and I could still type in Google Docs without any lag.
The Envy 16 scored extremely well on the Geekbench 5.4 overall performance benchmark, with a score of 11,621, but not as good as the Strix Scar 17 (13,209). The Dell Precision 5470 scored very similarly to the Envy 16 (11,040), but the average premium laptop scored about half as much (5,895).
On the Handbrake test, the Envy 16 transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in just 6 minutes and 10 seconds, beating the 9:58 average for premium laptops. The Dell Precision 5470 took an extra 18 seconds (6:28); the Strix Scar 17 surpassed the Envy 16 with an impressive 4:42. HP ENVY 16 BATTERY LIFEWith the HP Envy 16, you can have your cake and eat it too. What I mean by that is, you get powerful specs with great performance and pretty goodHP Envy 16 battery life. The Envy 16 lasted 9 hours and 21 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness.
While the Envy 16’s battery life is good enough for a full workday, it’s a bit below average compared with other premium laptops. The average for premium laptops is 10 hours and 35 minutes. The Envy 16’s content creator competitor, the Dell Precision 5470, lasted even longer, at 11 hours and 38 minutes.
The Envy 16’s gaming competitor, the Asus Strix Scar 17 (2022) G733Z, can’t even come close to the web-surfing Asus Strix Scar 17 batterylife. The Strix Scar 17 lasted just 6 hours and 20 minutes, a full three hours less than the Envy 16. However, we also tested the Envy 16’s battery life (PCMark 10) while gaming. It lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes, while the Strix Scar 17 lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes. For both laptops, it’s a smart idea to keep them plugged in while gaming — but the fan noise will be louder if you do so.

Asus ROG Strix G17 review: Great low-budget power

Let’s get one thing clear up front: I’m not a fan of Asus’ ROG laptops. The company’s popular line of gaming hardware has a reputation for quality reliability, and many other writers at Laptop Mag have raved about laptops like the Asus Rog Strix Scar 18.
But the elements of a gaming laptop I was looking for weren’t met when I tested the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17, which was let down by its so-so display, cheap looks, and $3,599 price tag. So when I pulled the Asus ROG Strix G17 out of the box, I was apprehensive. It looked similar, and I figured it would suffer from the same issues—wait, this laptop is only $1,399?
Sure, my basic gripe with its thin exterior remains, but it’s not as off-putting given the low price. The Strix G17’s excellent productivity performance and great frame rates, as well as its RTX 4060 graphics card, speak for themselves when gaming. While I would criticize anything over $2,000 with a display of this quality, it’s pretty vivid and bright for midrange hardware. With so much power for such a cheap product, it’s easily one of the best gaming laptops under $1,500, so
ASUS ROG Strix G17 Price and Configurations
The Strix G17 model we reviewed is $1,399 at Walmart. It features an AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 laptop graphics, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage. It also has a 17.3-inch, 2,560 x 1,440 display with a 240Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time.
LAPTOPMAG’s latest videoIt can also be upgraded to an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor, an RTX 4070 laptop GPU, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of SSD storage, and is priced at $2,199 on the Asus website.
Asus ROG Strix G17 designAsus has built a hulking behemoth, and I’m struck by its size every time I turn around and see the 17.3-inch Strix G17 sitting on the desk next to me. It has the iconic ROG logo printed on its lid, which glows white when the laptop is on, along with distinctive white spots on the black painted portion of the back bar. Lifting the lid reveals a large panel with a full keyboard, with the WASD keys featuring clear keycaps and white plastic underneath that absorbs the accompanying RGB colors well. The panel also has a row of angled triangles that give it an aesthetic.
Asus ROG Strix G17
Unfortunately, it suffers from the same design issues I noticed when reviewing the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17. While the milled aluminum chassis sounds nice, I could feel the panel sink when applying pressure to certain points of its thin chassis. I’m less forgiving of the Strix Scar 17 considering it costs over $3,000, but at least for this laptop, its build quality is understandable for its $1,399 price tag. The hinge also causes the lid to collapse in on itself near the bottom, and it feels pretty wobbly when adjusted.
Asus ROG Strix G17 PortsI rarely review laptops that have absolutely no ports on the right side, but the Strix G17 does. Other than that, it offers enough functionality for most people to play games without extra accessories.

Asus ROG Strix G17 DisplayWith a 17.3-inch, 2,560 x 1,440 resolution display with a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time, this screen won’t disappoint gamers who need a gorgeous display to play their favorite games.

I watched the trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and while it wasn’t noticeably vivid or bright, the claymation-like aesthetic of the turtles running around a stylized New York City had solid color outlines. The sketchbook quality of its world came to life with the display’s balanced contrast, and I was mesmerized by the various lights of the city against the night sky.

Asus ROG Strix G17 review: Great low-budget power Asus ROG Strix G17 battery life We never expect gaming laptops to sport decentAsus ROG  laptopbattery   life, even though laptops like the Razer Blade 14 continue to prove that this is possible, but the Strix G17 does particularly poorly in this endeavor. On the Laptop Mag battery test, which involves continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits, the Strix G17 lasted as short as 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Asus ROG Strix G17
Not only is this subpar to the category average of 5 hours and 44 minutes, but the Legion 5 Pro (4:38) and EON16-S (5:06) have nearly double the longevity. Even the Katana 15 (2:48) just barely surpasses it.

Fujitsu Lifebook S936 (6600U, 512 GB) PalmSecure Laptop Review

With its new flagship, Fujitsu has turned its sights on the traveling business user, for whom a mobile, all-around worry-free package is worth the money. It doesn’t change its core competencies, and the manufacturer has screwed up some details, but it won’t stop the target audience from buying this laptop. The new Fujitsu Lifebook S936 is a feature-rich ultra-compact laptop that keeps its focus on mobility, flexibility, versatility, and security. According to the manufacturer, the laptop is aimed at business people who travel frequently. Depending on the model, the price of this laptop is not cheap, ranging from 1500 to 2500 euros (about 1662 to 2769 US dollars). Although this laptop is not currently available in the United States, it is available in many countries in Europe and Asia.

Our test unit costs 2449 euros (about 2713 US dollars) and is designated by the manufacturer as VFY:S9360M87BPDE, and Fujitsu lists its details here. It is the top model of the series and is equipped with an energy-efficient Intel Core i7-6600U dual-core processor, a generous 20 GB of RAM, a Full HD IPS touch display and a 512 GB SSD. Graphics calculations are done by the Intel HD 520 GPU integrated in the CPU.
A special and unique feature of Fujitsu is the touchless PalmSecure sensor, which identifies the user by individual vein patterns (eg in the palm of the hand) and is said to be more secure than iris or fingerprint sensors. Fujitsu provides more information about PalmSecure technology here. Security functions are completed by the latest Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a smart card reader and related features of Windows 10 Pro or Windows 7 Professional (optional downgrade when installing W10) such as hard disk encryption.
The manufacturer further emphasizes mobile connectivity. In addition to the LTE/UMTS module with GPS, it is also equipped with Intel Wireless-AC 8260, as well as one of the current leading technology WLAN modules.

Our test unit came with two power supplies and a dock, which, in addition to an extraFujitsu Lifebook S936 battery, offers a number of extra connections for stationary operation. In our test model, the drive slot was occupied by a DVD burner, but can be optionally accepted as a Blu-ray burner, an extra battery, or an empty dummy insert.

Huawei MateBook 13 (2020) review: A low score

It’s a compact laptop with surprisingly powerful features, but we’re not fans of its connectivity. If this laptop were a boxer, it would be short, skinny, and sturdy. It has a lot of power, but that only becomes apparent when you throw it into a fight. This laptop’s power comes from Intel’s 10th-generation Core i7-10510U processor, and thanks to discrete Nvidia graphics, a fast M.2 SSD, and 16GB of RAM, it has all the right components.

Considering the MateBook’s slim frame, this is pretty good for the line. While most 13-inch laptops are over 300mm wide, this is just 286mm. It’s also only 14.9mm thick.
Huawei still found room for one of the best cooling systems we’ve ever seen in an ultraportable, which helps make it one of the fastest laptops we’ve tested with a Core i7-10510U. Just compare it to Huawei’s own MateBook X Pro, a pricier and supposedly more powerful laptop, which the MateBook 13 easily outperformed by 25 percent with an overall benchmark score of 104. The MateBook 13 also lasted several minutes at turbo clock speeds between 4GHz and 4.8GHz to add power. The downside is fan noise, but that only came up during particularly difficult tasks, not general use of the Huawei MateBook laptop.Huawei MateBook 13 Laptop Battery
Battery life is good, if not exceptional; in our tests, a score of 8 hours and 15 minutes is enough to get you through a workday, but you won’t be able to last much longer without a quick recharge.

However, Huawei makes full use of the GeForce MX250 graphics card, which is slightly better than the integrated graphics from Intel and AMD. For example, Metro: Last Light averaged 44.9fps at 1080p, while Dirt: Versus averaged 89.6fps.

That extra performance means you can play many games at the 2,160-by-1,440 screen resolution.
Mental math experts will note that this equates to a Surface Pro-style 3:2 aspect ratio, rather than the 16:9 of most screens. The extra pixels also mean a higher density than a Full HD (1,920-by-1,080) panel, making it easier to see two windows side by side on the screen. It’s also a touchscreen, and color accuracy is good enough even for web designers, with 90.4% sRGB gamut coverage and an average Delta E of 0.94; but not for print designers, as it has 62.9% Adobe RGB coverage. Despite a relatively low contrast ratio of 990:1, don’t despair if you’re looking for an after-get off work entertainment system. It handles dark, moody scenes well, and a pair of decent speakers means you don’t need to plug in headphones. The drums lose something in translation, and you wouldn’t want to listen to heavy metal with it, but the same is true of most laptop speakers.
The only two physical connectors here, aside from a 3.5mm combo jack, are USB-C, one on each side. Huawei bundles an adapter with HDMI, USB, and VGA connectors, but that doesn’t make up for the annoyance that the left USB-C port only supports charging and data transfer, while the right port is for data transfer only. If you want to connect a monitor, you’ll need to dig out that adapter.
We were also disappointed to see 802.11ac wireless instead of Wi-Fi 6, and the only good news for owners of recent Huawei and Honor phones is: With Huawei Share, you can tap your phone to a sticker below the keyboard and quickly share files between the phone and the laptop.

An unfortunate side effect is the Huawei Share sticker itself, which ruins the minimalist lines of this laptop. You can peel it off, but Share will no longer work. There’s a huge trackpad on the left side, paired with a backlit keyboard with large keys. It’s not our favorite way to type, with little feedback, but at least it’s quiet.
Huawei built a fingerprint reader into the power button, but note that the webcam squeezed into the top bezel doesn’t support Windows Hello. It takes terrible photos, but its videos are passable for Zoom.

Should you buy the Huawei MateBook 13? Its speed is indeed excellent, and aside from the Huawei Share tab, it looks great. That said, if you’re spending this much money, you should demand a better keyboard and USB-C ports that actually work like the others. It’s a good laptop, but it lacks a killer punch.
