HP ProBook 5310m: A thin and light laptop for business users

I’ve often said that I prefer matte LCDs on laptops. This stems mostly from my experience using laptops outdoors – I often use them outdoors (e.g. in the car or at the park). Reflections outdoors can be a big issue, so matte LCDs are the best option for me. If you use your laptop mostly indoors, or at least in the shade, a glossy LCD will improve contrast by about 20-35%. This means that a high-contrast LCD might go from 800:1 to 1000:1. On the other hand, if you compare a cheap anti-glare LCD to a glossy LCD, you might go from 250:1 to 185:1… or even lower. The standard anti-glare 1366×768 display on the 5310m falls into the “lower” category, offering the lowest contrast we’ve seen in more than four years. Ouch! Aside from the anti-glare coating, there’s really nothing to like about this LCD. It’s fairly bright, but the black levels are among the highest (i.e. the worst) we’ve ever measured, resulting in a contrast ratio of just 141:1. Gamut is also at the bottom of our chart, with Delta E being one of the highest (i.e., worst) scores.
Despite the rather small 41Wh 4-cell battery, the 5310m does have decent battery life. It’s on par with most CULV offerings, most of which have batteries that are 50% larger. We expect the SU2300 version of the 5310m to be comparable to similar laptops, especially with the upgrade to a 6-cell
HP ProBook 5310m Battery
pack. But in doing so, you’ll give up the app performance shown on the previous page.
We also added an interesting metric to this round of battery life testing: idle and Internet battery life under standard laptop settings (i.e., without uninstalling all the overkill software). The biggest culprit here is the Internet Security Suite; HP provides a trial version of McAfee Internet Security. The orange bar shows what happens to performance if McAfee is left installed, and it also helps illustrate why removing unneeded apps can significantly improve mobility and performance. Of course, if you run without any protection, you do so at your own risk; it’s something I’ve done effortlessly for the past 10 years or so, but I’m not a good representative of the typical computer user.
First, let’s talk about the “clean” battery life comparison. The 5310m lasted a little over 5.5 hours, less than the 6.5 hours HP claims. We calibrated the brightness to 100nits (36% brightness under Windows) and ran it in power saving mode, and still couldn’t break 6 hours. Battery life drops significantly under more realistic loads such as Internet surfing; we measured just under 4 hours in our Flash-intensive Internet test. HD x264/H.264 playback was our worst case scenario, with battery life dropping to just over 2.5 hours. With the larger 6-cell battery, you can improve these results by 50% – as expected from CULV (i.e. slightly lower results due to the higher-performing CPU).
With McAfee Internet Security enabled, battery life dropped significantly, at least in our light-use (idle) test. With McAfee installed, the 5310m’s
HP ProBook Battery
life dropped from over 5.5 hours to less than 4 hours—a 35% drop! Internet
HP ProBook 5310m Battery
life, on the other hand, dropped only 7%, suggesting that McAfee and Internet browsing in general put enough load on the CPU to keep it from using deep sleep states. We don’t have results from the various Internet Security suites yet, but we’ll focus on testing future laptops with standard security features enabled to see how they affectHP ProBook 5310m Battery life.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 2024 is optimized for quiet gaming at just 35 dBA

As you may already know, Asus offers a few performance profiles for its ROG gaming laptops, one of which is called “Silent,” which emphasizes keeping overhead fan noise below 35 dBA.
The problem is that this silent profile has been hit or miss on all Asus ROG devices I’ve used over the years, and it was particularly bad on the Zephyrus G14 GA403 I recently tested.
I’m particularly interested in silent specs on computers like the G14, which is primarily a compact, all-purpose device, not a gaming machine. As such, I’d expect potential buyers to only game in their free time and opt for low noise levels whenever possible.
Now I’ve shown you that this 14-inch laptop is a great gaming machine in both the 4060 and 4070 configurations, and is even capable of running most modern games at above 60 fps at 2.8K resolution and ultra settings. But in Turbo mode, the noise rises to 48 dBA.
However, the default silent mode is inconsistent and doesn’t make the most of this configuration and situation.
So I used the manual mode settings in the Armoury Crate app and set an optimized silent mode that still keeps the fans quiet at under 35 dBA but provides better gaming performance and a more consistent gaming experience.
So here are the settings. We’re getting a little complicated here, but understand that you can easily reproduce these settings yourself using the instructions and images below:
CPU, GPU, and system fans are set to 40% RPM when the temperature is above 60°C.
For the CPU, I limited the SPL power to 15W to deliver as much power as possible to the GPU. As you’ll see later, the total combined performance in this mode is thermally limited, but we’re still working to achieve the highest TGP of the graphics chip, as that’s the most important factor in gaming frame rates.
For the GPU, I set a temperature limit of 80 degrees Celsius, which means that the system will adjust performance and frequencies to avoid exceeding this limit. You might think that 80°C is a pretty low limit, and perhaps you can set it higher than 82-84°C, but I chose a setting that I thought was safer for long-term use. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Battery
I must point out that this mode is not suitable for daily use and general multitasking, as it cannot run at high clock speeds due to severe CPU limitations. If you plan to use a similar device in daily use, do not limit the SPL and FPPT CPU performance settings in this way, otherwise the laptop will feel sluggish and laggy. These settings are only suitable for gaming, as they are designed to maximize GPU performance.
Of course, these CPU settings will also affect the loading time of games, which will take longer than other configurations. But in general, these settings bring better frame rates and lower 1% scores than the 20-25W power allocation. Still, you can try these settings for yourself.

HP Dragonfly G4 review: The ideal business laptop for traveling

Road warrior, hybrid worker, business traveler. There are countless terms for people who work more on the road than at their desk. HP is addressing this target group with the Dragonfly G4. In the fourth generation, HP has equipped its lightweight notebook with a Core i7 from Intel’s Raptor Lake generation–apart from that, little has changed.
The Dragonfly weighs just under 2.64 pounds and is housed in a sturdy blue-grey casing made from a magnesium-aluminium mix. The material surface has a pleasant grip as it is slightly roughened. As the corners and edges are rounded, the Dragonfly is also painless to pick up. You can open the display 180 degrees with one hand. Read on to learn more.

Looking for more options? Check out PCWorld’s roundup of the best laptops available today..HP Dragonfly G4 notebook battery
HP Dragonfly G4: Small notebook, loads of connectionsConsidering its compact form factor, the Dragonfly is well equipped: Above all, it has more ports than other ultra-mobile lightweights, which often only offer Type-C with Thunderbolt 4. The Dragonfly also has two of these 40 Gbps ports for connecting the power supply unit among other things. However, there’s also an HDMI 2.1 output and a USB Type A socket
The HP notebook comes with plenty of business-ready extras, too. In addition to WLAN with Wi-Fi 6E, you can also go online on the go via the built-in 5G module. The slot for the nano-SIM card on the left-hand side of the casing can be conveniently removed without opening tools.

You can log in using your finger via a sensor button at the bottom right of the keyboard or via the full HD camera. Its lens can be closed with a special button, but automatic logging in and out of the notebook via HP’s Auto-Lock & Awake still works because this function recognizes the user via a proximity sensor.
HP Dragonfly G4_AußenansichtYou can also use the F2 key to restrict the display’s viewing angle. This Sure View privacy filter is designed to prevent nosy neighbors on trains and planes from catching operational or other secrets with a quick glance at the screen.

The underside of the housing can be easily opened after removing four screws. The Laptop battery, SSD, and cellular module can be replaced. However, the RAM and WLAN hardware are soldered on.
HP Dragonfly G4: Top choice for office work, sufficient for multimedia tasksThe Core i7-1355U in the Dragonfly delivers the usual speed for an economical processor from the U-series: The performance is absolutely sufficient for office applications and for most multimedia programs. It just isn’t made for demanding video editing and rendering applications. This is because the hybrid CPU can’t really pick up speed due to the thermal conditions in the compact casing. It calculates around ten percent slower in Cinebench R23, for example, than in a larger 15-inch notebook.

The speed advantage over the predecessor Dragonfly G3 with Alder Lake CPU is around 10 percent, a little more for multimedia, a little less for Office. However, compared to a professional multimedia notebook with GPU such as the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i, the speed deficit is only significant when, as in rendering, the CPU and graphics card are required to work together. During normal work with photos and videos, the lag is usually only around ten percent because the Dragonfly is equipped with a generous 32GB of RAM.

The two small fans in the HP notebook are quiet even under a heavy load. However, they frequently change their rotational speed, which causes the operating noise to fluctuate and disturb sensitive users more than when the fans rotate a little faster but at a constant volume .
HP Dragonfly G4_Anschlüsse rechtsConnections on the right-hand side.Thomas RauHP Dragonfly G4: Battery life will last you a long journeyAn ultra-mobile business notebook is defined above all by its weight and  HP  notebook battery life. The Dragonfly impresses in both disciplines. In addition to its low weight, it has an outstanding battery life of 17.5 hours in the WLAN test. The battery capacity is 68 Wh, if you’re curious.

HP Dragonfly G4: The display is ideal for office useThe 13.5-inch screen has an aspect ratio of 3:2. This is practical for office work, as the additional vertical pixels allow you to see more content from text documents and websites, for example, than with 16:9 or 16:10 . The resolution of 1920×1280 is not exceptionally high, but is sufficient for standard office applications.

In the test, the Dragonfly shines with a very high brightness and excellent contrast. The latter makes text and spreadsheet work more pleasant while the former, in combination with the anti-reflective display surface, makes image content easy to read even in difficult lighting conditions The Dragonfly can also automatically adjust its brightness to changing light conditions using a sensor.

HP Dragonfly G4 Anschlüsse linksHP Dragonfly G4: Connectors on the left.Thomas Rau
The luminance is not evenly distributed, as the brightness decreases significantly from top to bottom. However, this is less noticeable on the small screen than on a large monitor. What is immediately noticeable, however, is the display’s dependence on the viewing angle.

Even if you haven’t activated “Sure View”, the image immediately loses contrast and color saturation if you are not sitting in front of it optimally. Nevertheless, the screen can be tilted flexibly so that users of any height can find the ideal viewing angle.
HP Dragonfly G4: The keyboard and touchpad are designed for frequent typists and clickersA top keyboard rounds off the Dragonfly G4’s office suitability. The keys are relatively large for this form factor. What’s especially pleasing is the very pronounced pressure point that all keys have across the entire keyboard surface including the space bar. As is usual with ultrabooks, the arrow keys are not positioned separately and the up and down keys are combined in the size of one key.

The touchpad also impresses with clear pressure feedback. It even remains very quiet when the mouse is clicked. The Dragonfly’s surface strikes the perfect balance between grip and speed. You can position the mouse pointer precisely or let it whiz quickly across the display as required.

Honor’s new Magicbook 14 promises 17 hours of battery life

Honor says its newly upgraded Honor Magicbook 14 laptop can run for 17 hours on a single charge thanks to its 75Wh Honor Magicbook 14 laptop battery.
Launched at the IFA tech trade show in Berlin, it’s the first time Honor has applied its system-level power-saving algorithm, OS Turbo, to one of its laptops.
Priced at a significant increase from the £799/€849 Core i5-powered 2021 model, Honor appears to be targeting the premium Windows laptop market. It’s a competitive price bracket, with good alternatives from both Huawei and Microsoft, though Honor’s design won’t necessarily stand out as it sits firmly in the plain silver laptop camp popularized by the MacBook Air.
What really matters, though, is its internals, with its powerful 75Wh battery and 135W fast charger allowing Honor to say that just 15 minutes of charging will give the computer 3.5 hours of life, and a full charge in 80 minutes. Two fans and a tweaked design to help dissipate heat keep the computer cool under such power loads. In addition to its 2.1k display and fingerprint sensor, the Magicbook 14 also comes with Honor’s proprietary Honor Share technology, which is very impressive if it works as seamlessly as the company claims.
You can mirror your phone’s screen to the laptop, answer calls, or use the keyboard to enter text on your phone or tablet. You can also drag and drop content from one device to another, which seems like a great alternative to technologies like Apple’s AirDrop. The company is pushing its ecosystem further this year, as Honor also announced the Honor 70 phone and Pad 8 tablet. The Magicbook 14 also makes use of Honor’s device cloning software, which allows people to transfer all their data from an old laptop to a new one. Small details like this are crucial if Honor wants to become a reliable mainstay in Europe’s computing scene, so it’s great to see the company rolling out new features.

Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A review: The best Ultrabook yet

Bottom Line: The Asus Zenbook UX31A is my favorite ultrabook because it fixes most of the issues with the first-gen Zenbook while adding a full HD IPS screen and keeping the cool design and price the same. Pros
Stunning looks, great IPS display, improved trackpad and backlit chiclet keyboard, solid performance, decent battery life, cool and quiet design and looksLet’s take a quick look at the looks first. Of course, if there’s one thing consumers loved about the first-gen Zenbook, it was its luxurious looks. With its brushed aluminum chassis and slim profile, the Zenbook is one of the most attractive laptops ever, especially if you’re looking for something a little flashier, although some may find the Asus ultrabook a little flashy.
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the brushed aluminum with concentric circle designs. I prefer my laptops to have simpler designs, like Lenovo’s ThinkPad or Apple’s MacBook, but that’s entirely my personal, subjective opinion. The Asus UX31A weighs 2.96 pounds and is 0.65 inches at its thickest point, although it looks slimmer, especially since it is much thinner at the front than at the back. In fact, you should be careful with sharp edges, as they can cause unpleasant accidents.
The Zenbook Prime is not the thinnest or lightest ultrabook in its class, however (the Toshiba Z835 still dominates), but its solid feel and solid build quality make up for this to some extent. ScreenThe Zenbook UX31A proves once again that every laptop should have an IPS display. The 13.3-inch panel offers Full HD resolution, and images and text appear extremely sharp. However, there are some issues that prevent Windows 7 from scaling fonts and interface elements correctly. However, if you leave them at the default settings, everything on the screen will become very small, which can be annoying and even a headache. Hardware and PerformanceNow it’s time to see how this laptop performs in everyday use. The UX31A is based on the Intel Ivy Bridge ULV hardware platform and comes with integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and SSD storage. You can choose between a Core i5 or a faster Core i7 processor, and my review unit opted for the latter.
This laptop has a 50WhASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A Laptop Battery
That’s enough for about four and a half hours of daily use, including browsing, listening to music, chatting, editing texts and some photos, etc. If you loop a 720p movie at 70% screen brightness and activate power saving mode, you’ll get about 5 hours of use.
I’d say it’s OK if you use the computer slowly, with the screen dimmed and the keyboard backlight off,ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A Battery
The battery life could be longer (even closer to 6 hours), but some ultrabooks can extend it by an hour or two per charge. One more thing: ASUS opted for the latest Intel Centrino wireless solution in its Zenbook Prime, which means better Wi-Fi performance and the addition of WiDi. Some customers have reported Wi-Fi issues with their build. I haven’t experienced any issues on my device, but it’s something you should be aware of.

Sony Vaio T13 review – A stylish and affordable Ultrabook

Bottom Line: The Sony Vaio T13 is a budget ultrabook, but overall a nice, solid, and fast machine. It has its drawbacks, of course, as corners were cut to meet the low price, though I don’t think any of these are real deal breakersI’m sure you’ve all heard of Sony’s VAIO. In the past, VAIOs were among my favorite laptops, but they were pretty expensive.
With that in mind, you might think that Sony’s first ultrabook, the Vaio T13, would also be expensive. But that’s not the case, as Sony’s T series is aimed at regular users, while the S and Z series focus on business customers.
Update: Want to save some money on the Vaio T13? This article will tell you where to find discounted ones, so it’s definitely worth a look.
That’s why the Sony Vaio T13 starts at around $700, making it one of the cheapest ultrabooks you can buy right now. The T13 retains the style of the higher-end Vaio series, retains its build quality to a certain extent, comes with plenty of ports, good performance, and a decent keyboard and
Sony Vaio T13 battery.
But are these enough to make the T13 a suitable choice? You will find out after reading the review below.
Design and AppearanceI remember talking to a Sony official not long ago, and he told me that they put a lot of effort into making their ultrabooks look stunning. That is indeed the case with the Vaio T13, which is one of the simplest, yet most beautiful machines in its class.
Weighing about 3.5 pounds and measuring 0.7 inches thick, the Sony Vaio T13 is not the lightest or thinnest 13.3-inch ultrabook. But it is still quite portable.
All the ports are lined up on the side, and Sony did not cut corners. On the left side are the power supply, a larger cooling grille, and two USB ports. On the right side are the headphone/microphone jack, card reader, HDMI and VGA video outputs, and a Lan adapter. The status LEDs are located on the front edge, just below the trackpad, and they are quite hidden.
Turn the laptop upside down, and you will find that the Vaio T13 is one of the very few ultrabooks with a removable battery, and easy access to the internal components, allowing you to easily upgrade the memory or replace the hard drive. This is something many people might appreciate. You’ll also notice another peculiarity of this test unit: the bottom is easily scratched, which is a sign of the laptop’s lack of reliability.
Lift the lid and you’ll find more aluminum, covering the palm rest and the area around the keyboard. It looks nice, looks durable, and is certainly much sturdier than the metal plate on the lid, as it barely flexes in daily use. The power switch and a couple of extra buttons and LEDs are located on top of the keyboard, while other laptops have a simpler interior design, but these are actually quite handy and you’ll get used to them. ScreenThere’s a 13.3-inch glossy screen on the Vaio T13, though the thicker silver bezels around it make it look a bit small.
Now, the display itself isn’t great, but let’s not forget that this Sony ultrabook is a budget ultrabook. It uses a regular TN panel and a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, with subpar brightness and contrast, and pretty dull colors.
The screen is actually terrible Keyboard and touchpadWhen it comes to keyboards, Vaios used to be the standard in the industry, but that’s not the case with the T13.
The keys are of decent size and well-spaced, though the gaps between them are a little too big. However, the overall feedback is poor, with a small dip that will make you miss a lot of keystrokes, at least until you get used to it. Also, Sony decided to go with a standard non-backlit keyboard on its ultrabook in an attempt to improve the typing experience, but the end result is certainly not that great. As for the trackpad, this one is much better. It feels nice and is fairly accurate, though it can get a little shaky at times. The clickpad isn’t very stiff, so clicks register smoothly, and it also handles gestures and palm rejection well. One minor downside, though, is that I wish there was a bigger trackpad, as this one does feel a little cramped.
Hardware and PerformanceHardware-wise, the Vaio T13 is powered by either the older Intel Sandy Bridge or the newer Intel Ivy Bridge ULV platforms. My test unit is probably the cheapest configuration, with a Core i3-2367M CPU, 4 GB RAM, and a 320 GB regular hard drive plus a 32 GB mSATA SSD for caching. Better-equipped versions will offer Core i5 and i7 Ivy Bridge processors, though.
My test unit performed just fine for everyday tasks, though heavy multitasking can make it rather sluggish. However, for browsing, editing videos, playing some light games, and watching clips, it performed just fine. Sony Vaio T13 Battery LifeThe 3-cell 45 Wh Sony Vaio T13 battery inside this device is rated for 7+ hours of battery life, but in real-world use, the laptop only lasted a maximum of four and a half hours on average in balanced mode with the screen set to 70%. With light computer use and the screen fully dimmed, it could go over five hours.
On the other hand, I do expect the more powerful configuration to only average around four hours on a single charge.

Aorus 15 XE5 review: A compact QHD gaming laptop with Thunderbolt 4

Energy guzzler. With the Aorus 15 XE5, Gigabyte has introduced another 15.6-inch compact gaming notebook to the market. Among other things, this laptop shines with its impressive performance (both in gaming and non-gaming applications) and its ability to accommodate two PCIe 4.0 SSDs. The Gigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 features a black plastic chassis with a smooth, matte finish. There are no extravagant design elements to the device. The thin bezels around the display add an elegant touch to the laptop. The laptop’s design is further accentuated by the illuminated Aorus logo on the back of the lid. Once you remove the bottom panel, you can get a peek at the battery (screwed on, not glued on) and the rest of the internals. Keyboard

This gaming laptop comes with a chiclet keyboard with a number pad. The smooth keys offer a moderate travel distance and a distinct actuation point. The keyboard does not flex while typing. Each key is individually illuminated and has two brightness levels. Overall, Gigabyte has offered a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use. Performance – Plenty of power thanks to Alder Lake and AmpereThe Gigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 is a powerful 15.6-inch laptop that performs well in a variety of demanding usage scenarios. In addition to the review configuration, Gigabyte also offers two other models: one with an RTX 3080 Ti laptop (Aorus 15 YE5) and another with an RTX 3060 laptop (Aorus 15 KE5).
ProcessorThe Core i7-12700H processor (Alder Lake) contains six performance cores (Hyper-Threading, 2.4 to 4.7 GHz) and eight efficiency cores (no Hyper-Threading, 1.8 to 3.5 GHz), for a total of 20 logical CPU cores.
When the laptop is powered by Gigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 Laptop battery
power, the clock speed is significantly reduced. Overall, the Core i7 in the Aorus 15 XE5 delivered slightly above average benchmark results. Power Management – The XE5 requires too much powerGigabyte Aorus 15 XE5 Laptop
Energy ConsumptionThe Aorus 15 XE5 consumes too much power when idle, consuming around 31 to 46 watts, sometimes even up to 80 watts in the worst cases. Comparing the XE5 to its competitors gives a rough idea of how much power an Optimus-enabled laptop should consume when idle. This high power consumption is likely due to a bug. The problem persists even when disabling the AI Boost feature. So we’ll have to wait and see if Gigabyte is able to fix this with software or a BIOS update.
Throughout the stress test and The Witcher 3 test, the laptop’s power consumption remained stable and at a level that’s normal for the hardware. The included charger has more than enough capacity to power the laptop and was able to handle momentary spikes that exceeded its output rating (240 watts).

Laptops with the Longest Battery Life – Summer 2024 Review

Apple MacBook Pro 14The laptop with the longestApple MacBook Pro 14 batterylife we’ve tested is the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M3, 2023). This premium workstation’s battery life lasts for more than 15 hours with light use. That’s enough to get you through a full day, or even two, easily, depending on your workload. It has a crisp Mini LED display, a roomy keyboard, and an easy-to-use tactile touchpad. Ports include three USB/Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1, and a full-size SD card reader. You can configure it with either the M3 Pro or Max SoC (system-on-chip); both are fast enough to handle demanding workloads like video editing, 3D graphics and animation, and programming. There’s also a basic M3 chip option if you don’t need as much processing power but still want “pro” features like a display and upward-firing speakers.
A Windows alternative is the Dell XPS 16 (2024). It’s also a high-end workstation laptop with plenty of processing power and good battery life, though the hardware configuration will affect its longevity. Hardware options include Intel Core 7 or 9 CPUs, up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, and either 120Hz FHD+ IPS or 90Hz 4K+ OLED panels. The latter has full DCI P3 color space coverage, making it a great choice for color-critical work at the expense of battery life. The SSD is user-replaceable, so you can easily increase the amount or upgrade to better-performing memory or a faster drive. While this laptop is very well-made, unfortunately both the keyboard layout and touchpad design take a while to get comfortable using; the borderless design of the keycaps can easily lead to accidental inputs, and you can’t see the edge of the touchpad due to the front deck design.
Apple MacBook Air 13
Our best mid-range and high-end pick is the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2024). Like the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M3, 2023) above, it’s a high-end, well-built model with a Apple MacBook Air 13 battery that can easily get you through a typical eight-hour workday. Its base M3 SoC isn’t as powerful as the M3 Pro or Max versions, so it’s better suited for lighter general productivity tasks like text processing, web browsing, and video playback. It can handle some demanding work, like video editing, but you won’t get as good an experience as the Pro models.
The user experience is great, with a bright Retina display, a comfortable keyboard, and a huge tactile trackpad. The main downside is that it only has two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports; this supports two external displays, but only when the laptop is closed. Apple is still selling the M2-based Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022) as a more affordable option, at $100 less. The M3 model has only a few minor upgrades, including Wi-Fi 6E, slightly better performance, and support for two external displays (when the laptop is closed).
For Windows users, we recommend the HP Spectre x360 14 (2024). This 14-inch 2-in-1 offers an excellent user experience, with great build quality, a large tactile trackpad, and a crisp 2.8K OLED display, while still delivering all-day battery life for light use. It has a better port selection than the MacBook Air, with one USB-A, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and it also supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, which offers faster connection speeds and lower latency if you have a compatible modem. Its Meteor Lake Intel processor handles general productivity tasks without a problem, but isn’t quite as well suited to more demanding workloads.
Lenovo Yoga 7i 16
If you want a more modest mid-range model, check out the Lenovo Yoga 7i 16 (2023). It has a large 16-inch display that’s perfect for split-screen multitasking, and since it’s a 2-in-1, you can flip the screen around and use it as a tablet. The Lenovo Yoga 7i 16 battery lasts a little over 12 hours with light use, and charges over USB-C. You can choose between an FHD+ or QHD+ panel; we recommend the latter because it looks sharper and is brighter to combat glare. You can configure it with Intel’s 13th-generation U-series and P-series CPUs, which are fast enough for general productivity tasks like text processing, web browsing, presentations, and spreadsheets.
The keyboard feels nice to type on and also comes with a number pad, which is great for people who crunch a lot of numbers. It also has a fingerprint sensor and a facial recognition camera for quick logins. Port-wise, there are two USB-A, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, one HDMI, and a MicroSD card reader. The only downsides are that the webcam image has an unnatural tint and the microphone picks up some background noise. Finally, the display supports stylus input, but you may need to buy the stylus separately, depending on the model. The stylus uses Wacom AES technology and supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt.

Dell Alienware m18 R2 (2024) Laptop Review

The Dell Alienware m18 R2 (2024) is a mid-range gaming laptop. It replaces the Dell Alienware m18 (2023). This 2024 model features Intel 14th-generation CPUs (Raptor Lake update) up to the Core i9-14900HX, and NVIDIA 40-series GPUs, from the RTX 4060 to the RTX 4090, the latter with a maximum TGP (total graphics power) of 175W. Memory and storage max out at 64GB and 8TB (in RAID 0), respectively. Display options remain the same as its predecessor, including 165Hz QHD+ and 480Hz FHD+ panels; both support G-SYNC variable refresh rate technology. It has a 1080p webcam, Wi-Fi 7 support, and a 97Wh Dell Alienware m18 R2  battery. The keyboard switches are customizable; you can choose between scissor switches or ultra-thin (clicky) CherryMX mechanical switches. Ports include three USB-A, three USB-C (two with Thunderbolt 4 support), one HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, Mini DisplayPort, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack The Dell Alienware m18 R2 is an excellent gaming laptop. Its high-performance Intel 14th-generation CPU and NVIDIA RTX 40-series GPU enable high and consistent frame rates in demanding games at 1080p or 1440p, resulting in a smooth and responsive gaming experience. You can choose between a 480Hz FHD+ or 165Hz QHD+ display; both have fast response times for crisp images and support for variable refresh rates to reduce screen tearing. It has plenty of ports, including an Ethernet port to ensure a reliable internet connection when gaming online. RAM and storage are user-upgradeable, so you can add more later. Thermal throttling is minimal, but the laptop can get hot and loud under load. Compared to other laptopsThe Dell Alienware m18 R2 is an excellent gaming laptop with a solid build, a fast display, plenty of ports, and great performance. It’s also one of the few laptops on the market with customizable keyboard switches. However, its bulky design and weight make it not recommended for use on the go, and it can get very hot and noisy under load. The Dell Alienware m18 R2 has an excellent keyboard. The keyboard on our unit features CherryMX ultra-thin mechanical switches. You can also buy the laptop with a scissor-switch keyboard, which we expect to be similar to the one on the Dell Alienware m18 (2023). The layout feels spacious and easy to adapt to, and it’s the same no matter which key switches you use. The keys are stable, have a good amount of travel, and require very little force to actuate. They offer a unique tactile and audio feedback; you can hear it here. Both keyboards (scissor-switch and mechanical) feature per-key RGB backlighting, which you can customize through the Alienware Command Center app. Brightness can be adjusted using the F7 shortcut key  Dell Alienware m18 R2 Battery life (video playback)3.1 hours. The port selection on the Dell Alienware m18 R2 is excellent. All three USB-A ports support USB 3.2 Gen 1 data transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps. The USB-A next to the Ethernet port supports PowerShare, a feature that lets you set how much Dell Alienware m18 R2 battery power a connected device can draw while charging. For example, if you set it to 25%, charging will stop when you’ve used 25% of the laptop’s total  laptop’s battery. You can also turn charging off completely. The two USB-Cs on the back both support Thunderbolt 4 (up to 40Gbps data transfer speeds and two external 4k displays at 60Hz) and DisplayPort 1.4, while the USB-C on the right side of the laptop supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 data transfer speeds. The HDMI is a true HDMI 2.1 port that can output a 4k @ 120Hz signal. The Ethernet controller is an Intel Killer E5000 5G.
