DJI Air 3S review: The new benchmark for drones

The new DJI Air 3S is an excellent drone with a dual-camera system that lets aerial and travel photographers take wide-angle and mid-telephoto photos. With a large 1-inch sensor, next-generation obstacle avoidance, 42GB of internal storage, and excellent low-light performance, this is the best 4K/60fps drone you can buy today. However, it’s not much different from the Air 3, and requires FAA registration to fly. So should you buy it? Read my full DJI Air 3S review to learn more. DJI Air 3S Drone  BatteryUp to 4 Hours of Battery LifeA big improvement over the Air 3S is the massive 42GB of internal storage (versus 8GB on the Air 3). Of course, a microSD card is included for more storage.I tested the Fly More combo and the RC-2 controller, which has a bright 5.5-inch 1080P 700-nit touchscreen. The detachable joystick is comfortable and responsive, even during extended use. The RC-2 has four antennas that transmit clear, low-latency images up to a range of 31.42 miles. The Air 3S has a flight noise level of 80 decibels, similar to the Air 3 and other DJI drones. The Air 3S has an ActiveTrack 360° feature, which basically lets you drag the frame around your subject on the RC-2 touchscreen and move it while keeping the subject in the center of the photo. To perform these actions, the Air 3S uses omnidirectional obstacle sensors to avoid collisions with objects. DJI Drone BatteryThe DJI Air 3S can fly for 45 minutes on a single charge. That’s a minute less than the Air 3’s 46 minutes and a minute less than the Mavic 3 Classic, but longer than the Mavic Air 2 (34 minutes, $799) and Air 2S (31 minutes, $1,000).DJI Air 3S Dark Gray Drone This is why we recommend buying the Fly More combo. 2 Extra SheetsDJI Air 3S Drone BatteryWith a total flight time of up to 135 minutes, you no longer have to worry about getting home to recharge your drone. As mentioned, the Air 3S charges directly from the USB-C port and can be charged from zero to 100% in less than two hours. The RC-2 controller also includes a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a 90-minute charge time.DJI Air 3S Drone Battery
Up to 4 hours of use time. What’s not to like about the DJI Air 3S? Yes, it weighs a little over 249 grams, not much different from its predecessor, and requires FAA/CAA registration. The Air 3S also performs well in low-light environments, and its obstacle avoidance and return-to-home technology mean you never have to worry about getting lost at night. If you don’t have 42 GB of internal storage, you can use a microSD or the DJI Fly app to quickly download images. The RC-2 controller makes flying and controlling the Air 3S very simple.

DJI Mavic 4: What we want to see

The DJI Mavic 3 series has been on the market for three years, and the DJI Mavic 4 is on the way. Time doesn’t stand still in the drone world, especially when market leader DJI has a relatively short product cycle that allows it to launch drones with more features. New models with excellent features and capabilities.
The original DJI Mavic 3 was released in 2021, while the DJI Mavic 3 Pro was released in 2023. While the Pro is fairly new, the entire series has been through quite a long product cycle, so it’s safe to say that the DJI Mavic 4 will be available as early as 2024.
The Mavic drone series is DJI’s prosumer series, giving hobbyists access to some of the most advanced professional drone technology without the high price of something like the DJI Inspire 3. It’s more expensive, but easier to use and quicker to implement. Whether it’s the triple-camera Mavic 3 Pro or the single-camera DJI Mavic 3 Classic, the Mavic models beat the best drones for beginners in image quality, and they also offer advanced subject tracking and obstacle avoidance. The question we have to ask ourselves is: how can DJI improve on what is already one of the best drone series? Currently there is little information aboutDJI Mavic 4 Drone Battery
Rumors are few and far between, but we still expect to see some features in the next generation of the popular Mavic series. We will update the page when more information becomes available.
A little closer to home, the DJI Mavic 3 is set to be released in November 2021, and the latest model, the Mavic 3 Pro, is set to be released in May 2023. So while the latest model is fairly new, the entire series is in DJI terms – a product cycle.DJI  Mavic 3 Drone Battery
This suggests that the DJI Mavic 4 is about to be released, and we’re guessing the most likely and earliest release date is this fall. But with the release of the Mavic 3 Pro, we’re also guessing that the Mavic 4 will adopt a dual-camera design like the DJI Air 3 to differentiate it from its predecessor.

DJI Air 3 review: Old idea, new packaging

DJI Air 3 comes with two lenses, 46 minutes of flight time, and a familiar lookThe drone world’s worst-kept secret is out. It’s called the Air 3, and yes, all the rumors are true. Priced at $1,099 and up, this new DJI Air 3 drone from DJI comes with two cameras, 46 minutes of DJI Air 3 battery life, improved Ocusync 4 connectivity, a brand new controller, and a brand new design similar to the recently released Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Pro. Let me ask you a question: Are you particularly excited about these changes? No? Me too.

Secondly, as someone who desperately wants to extract the best image quality out of any of my cameras, I aim to shoot at the lowest possible ISO while maintaining a decent shutter speed (twice the frame rate). This means that once I switch from the f/1.7 aperture main lens to the f/2.8 telephoto lens, I’ll probably have to bump up the ISO, which in turn will introduce more noise into my clips.
As for photos, this drone shoots decent 12MP photos. You’ll be happy with the results, and DJI’s RAW files leave plenty of information to work with during the editing process. DJI also lists a 48MP photo mode, but I couldn’t find it in the menus. Presumably, it will be coming in a later firmware update. I’ve reached out to DJI about this. Other than the two lenses, there’s really not much to discuss if you’re familiar with DJI’s existing lineup. There’s a new controller, and it’s just as good as the last one. DJI’s OcuSync connection system has been upgraded, but I haven’t had major connection issues in years.DJI Air 3 Drone Battery
Range is 20 km (12 miles), but in practice (and legally) you won’t be able to take advantage of that. Battery life is pretty much the same across the line right now, which is to say about 45 minutes, give or take. I didn’t notice any major issues here, like I did with the DJI Mini 3 Pro battery
issues I found during my Mini 3 Pro review.
DJI has also replaced its D-Log color profile with a less bland version, D-Log M. It’s easier to color grade, and doesn’t require shooting at high ISOs like D-Log does, but it also has noticeably less dynamic range. I really wish DJI would give us a choice between the two. DJI quietly replaced D-Log with D-Log M in the Air 2S drone, too, with a recent software update. On the company’s forums, a DJI representative said it was just a “naming convention issue,” but it still pissed off a lot of pilots.

Night mode, which was introduced for the Mavic 3 in late 2022, is also on the new Air 3. It allows you to increase the ISO to 12800 from the usual 6400 limit in normal shooting mode. In addition to the shooting settings, it seems that some in-camera noise reduction is applied to the footage.
The Air 3 is a capable but unremarkable drone
At its core, the Air 3 is just a recycling of old ideas we’ve already seen in other DJI products. There’s not much new here to get you excited to go out and fly. I’d love to see something new next year. Can we get built-in ND filters? Will the 360-degree camera appear here? Or do we start with a rear camera? How about the adjustable aperture that has been gradually introduced to the Mavic 3 series? I’m ready for new things.

DJI Phantom 3 Professional review: DJI’s next-gen drone takes flying to the next level

The DJI Phantom 3 is so easy to set up and fly, and it’s a great way to take your drone obsession to the next level The DJI Phantom 3 Professional hovers motionlessly in front of me like a giant, plastic, very angry wasp, with its directional LEDs flashing, which makes it look scary. So far, all I’ve done is turn it on and hit the takeoff button. The drone handles everything else.
Take controlIf the camera is a big step forward, the new controller and app represent a huge leap forward. Both borrow from DJI’s higher-end (and more expensive) Inspire 1 drone, and they make taking off, flying, and recording much simpler than before.
First, setup is now much easier. Download the new DJI Pilot app (which also contains a number of tutorials), and you just plug it into your mobile device via the provided cable to connect.
It’s a little fiddly to do everything in the order in which you do it, but really, there’s nothing much more important than that. No more fiddly connecting via Wi-Fi – just plug in, calibrate the compass on the drone, and you’re ready to fly.
Thanks to GPS, a digital compass, an altimeter, and gyro sensors, it maintains its position completely stable with no user input required—even moderate winds only cause it to wobble momentarily. Meanwhile, it records high-quality 4K video footage via a motorized, stabilized onboard camera, and streams live 720p video directly to my smartphone screen.
It’s amazing how much technology DJI has packed into its latest consumer-grade quadcopter. However, visually, it looks very similar to its predecessor, the Phantom Vision 2+, which I reviewed earlier this year. The only notable differences are the new gold badge and the gold stripes adorning the drone’s arms. So what’s new? The answer is that, despite the exterior, there’s a lot going on.
First, the new camera may look the same, but it’s capable of recording 4K video at up to 30fps and 1080p video at up to 60fps. It shoots 12-megapixel stills, up to seven frames in a burst, and automatically captures bracketed shots and time-lapse sequences.
And the results from its Sony sensor are stunning, far better than what I was able to capture with the Vision 2+. With a maximum video bitrate of 60Mbits/sec, it can pick out tiny details from hundreds of meters away; I could see blades of grass and leaves moving in the breeze. Dynamic range is equally impressive, and the camera does a very good job with extreme areas of brightness and shadows. The lens isn’t as wide-angle as it used to be, so there’s much less of a fisheye effect in footage. As with the Vision 2+, the camera is mounted on an active motorized gimbal. This keeps the camera rig rock-steady even in moderate winds or close to the ground, and the overall effect is very professional. With a little practice—though you still have to be careful with the controls or the footage will look jerky—it’s possible to produce super-smooth footage that wouldn’t look out of place in Tour de France coverage.
It’s a little fiddly to do everything in the order in which you do it, but really, nothing really matters. No more fiddly connecting via Wi-Fi – just plug in, calibrate the on-drone compass, and you’re ready to fly. The new model even makes it easier to fly the drone indoors: a pair of position sensors in the Phantom 3’s belly means it can stay stable without a GPS signal – though you’ll still need a decent-sized space to fly if you don’t want to risk a crash. Residents of cramped Victorian terraced houses need not apply.
ConclusionThe DJI Phantom 3 is such a great performer and so easy to fly and shoot video that my biggest concern when testing it was finding a safe spot to fly. Even living in a leafy suburb outside London, I could only find a few nearby spots that were off the beaten path and far enough from buildings and roads to meet the rules for flying this type of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

DJI drones just got a new rival in the US that licenses… DJI technology

DJI is undoubtedly the industry’s leading drone manufacturer. However, if you’re in the US, that can be a problem, given the uncertainty of future restrictions and the current ban on Chinese-made drone technology for data security reasons. Anzu Robotics is a new name in the drone space and an alternative to DJI that actually uses DJI technology.

Founded by former Autel Robotics CEO Randal Warnas, the new company Anzu Robotics has quickly built high-quality drones by licensing proven DJI drone technology. In a one-off deal for its new Raptor series of drones (no ongoing partnership with DJI has been reported), Anzu Robotics used DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise hardware: a well-received professional folding drone launched in 2022 with an excellent 20MP Micro Four Thirds sensor.
If the Raptor drone uses DJI technology, how does it avoid restrictions in US airspace? Well, the drones are made in Malaysia and use domestic software developed in partnership with Aloft Technologies. This clever approach leverages the best technology from drone industry leader DJI while circumventing potential US bans and current restrictions on Chinese technology. DJI has now slammed the potential US ban, with a spokesperson calling it a “dangerous precedent that allows for unfounded accusations and xenophobic fears”. Skydio and Brinc professional drones are also very expensive, and Anzu Robotics is trying to disrupt the US drone market by undercutting its competitors with new drones that use industry-leading DJI technology. Many companies that previously used DJI drones and are familiar with the technology have been forced to close their fleets. For them, Anzu Robotics will be the obvious choice to take to US skies again.

DJI Avata 2 review – FPV flying has never been so immersive

DJI AVATA 2: TWO MINUTE REVIEWFPV (first-person view) drone flying has taken the world by storm. From being an underground hobby more than 15 years ago that required clever and determined pilots to find parts and build and repair their own drones, it has now truly become a mainstream activity that more people can get involved in than ever before – thanks in large part to market leader DJI.
Powered by a 2150mAhDJI Avata 2 battery, the Avata 2 can fly for up to 26 minutes at a slow cruise on a windless day; if you fly manually and perform loops and rolls on windier days, your flight time will be significantly reduced, but  DJI Avata 2 battery endurance is still good.
Once you buy the Avata 2, you can decide how easy or difficult you want to fly it. For beginners, you can fly it easily in Normal mode, using the intuitive DJI Motion Controller 3 and all the built-in assistance features DJI provides, including automatic takeoff, obstacle avoidance sensors, and automatic return. This means that anyone, regardless of previous experience, can enjoy the thrill of immersive flight while taking photos or videos – although, in reality, FPV is more about the flying experience and videography. The DJI Avata 2 is a complete redesign of its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase, dimensions of 7.26 x 8.35 x 2.52 inches / 184.5 x 212 x 64 mm, and a flatter frame for better aerodynamics. DJI claims the Avata 2 offers better durability and power than its predecessor, while being 1.06 ounces / 30 grams lighter. Without the DJI Avata 2 battery, which is surprisingly light, it remains to be seen how well it can withstand repeated collisions, although the option to use the built-in obstacle detection and avoidance feature could go a long way toward avoiding such accidents. It’s perhaps worth mentioning that this drone was never designed to be a freestyle FPV drone – it’s still a cinewhoop with a pipe.
In the UK, operators can fly the Avata 2 using high-definition goggles, as long as there is an observer nearby who can keep the drone in sight at all times. This is particularly useful for those using this drone commercially, as it allows them to concentrate on the task at hand without having to constantly worry about DJI Avata 2 Drone Batteryexhaustion and fear of missing that key moment.

DJI Mavic Mini review: Small but mighty

The DJI Mavic Mini is a micro-marvel, a small drone with big ambitionsPros Extremely compact and easy to fly Up to 30 minutes of flight timeDefaultNo side obstacle avoidance sensors, lack of tracking and time-lapse modesOn November 30, 2019, new drone laws came into effect in the UK, requiring owners of all drones weighing 250g or more to register with UK authorities and take an online safety test. However, if you buy a DJI Mavic Mini, you are not subject to this restriction, as its flying weight (proudly marked on the right side of the drone) is 1g less than this limit. DJI Mavic Mini review: What you need to knowThe DJI Mavic Mini is the lightest and smallest drone (DJI now calls it a flying camera) the company has ever made. With the battery installed, it weighs 249g, but I put it on the scale and with the camera cover removed, it weighed even less at 246g, and folded up small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. This is no toy, however. It features a fully mechanically stabilized 12-megapixel camera mounted on the camera, capable of capturing video at up to 2.7K resolution. It comes with a compact remote control, a transmission range of up to 2km, and a flight time of 30 minutes, which is comparable to larger drones. DJI Mavic Mini Review: DesignThe main appeal of the Mavic Mini is its compact size and ultra-light weight. Folded up, its four rotor arms are small enough to fit snugly in the palm of my hand without sticking out over the edges. The folding mechanism is the same as its more expensive (and more advanced) siblings, the Mavic Air and Mavic Pro: when you’re ready to fly, just pull the front arm horizontally, then the rear arm down and back. The folding rotor blades are already installed (secured with micro Phillips screws), and all that’s left is to install the batteries.DJI Mavic Mini Drone BatteryUnder a thin plastic cover on the rear of the drone are a microSD slot and a micro USB port for charging, as well as the drone’s only status LED.It’s a shame that the DJI drone battery itself doesn’t have a charging port; if you want to charge spare batteries while flying, you’ll need to buy a charging station that can hold up to three batteries.DJI Mavic Mini battery, included in the Fly More package.Overall, the build quality of the Mavic Mini is good, especially considering its extremely light weight. The arm hinges are sturdy and, while the battery cover is a bit thin, the rest of the body feels solidly constructed, much more solid than the similarly lightweight Parrot Anafi. Thankfully, DJI provides the Mavic Mini with a plastic protective cover that covers the camera unit mounted below. This nifty little camera is suspended on rubber mounts to absorb vibrations and features three-axis motorized stabilization, so it should produce steady footage no matter how hard you fly.So far, so good, but a quick physical inspection of the body shows that the Mavic Mini is missing some key features. While the drone has a downward-facing camera and two sonar sensors to ensure it can hover in one place without moving, there are no side, forward, or backward sensors to help it avoid collisions with buildings or trees. During autonomous operation. . Even the Mini’s predecessor, the DJI Spark, had a front-facing sensor, so this is a disappointing omission. DJI Mavic Mini Review: Camera and Image QualityThe DJI Mavic Mini’s camera is very advanced. Not only does it deliver very smooth and stable video, but the image quality is also very good. However, compared to the DJI Spark, the quality is not as high as I expected. In fact, the Mavic Mini’s camera falls short of expectations in some aspects. For example, while the resolution is also 12 megapixels, the aperture is f/2.8, while the aperture on the Spark is f/2.6.That being said, the Mavic Mini’s video recording resolution, frame rate, and bit rate are all higher than the Spark. Specifically, the Spark can only record 1080p video (in MP4/H.264 format) at 30fps and 24Mbps, while the Mavic Mini can record up to 2.7K (2720 x 1530) at 30fps and 40Mbps.DJI Mavic Mini Review: ConclusionHowever, for such a small and light drone, the DJI Mavic Mini performs well. This is a great addition. It captures video details and colors and is highly effective and visible in volume. The battery of the DJI Mavic Mini is long-lasting. In addition, it is also a guarantee of drone registration. For this reason, I have provided some simple introductory documents, including review articles and instructions for the Mavic Mini, if you have such a need.Of course, the Mavic Mini also has certain limitations. If you want to achieve a true aerial panorama or accelerated video, you can imagine using the Mavic Air, Mavic 2 Zoom or Pro. If you are an importer, it is difficult to polish it before importing it.

DJI Air 2S review: The best compact camera drone

A new image sensor and improved obstacle avoidance make the DJI Air 2S our favorite drone yet
Pros Great camera with 1-inch sensor, no need to look up to see objects, 5K video recording at 30 fps and 150 Mbits/sec
Due to lockdown restrictions in 2020, I wasn’t able to fly the predecessor of the DJI Air 2S, but that’s no big deal.
A great camera, consistent and responsive flight controls and impressive obstacle avoidance and tracking make this DJI the best consumer drone yet.
If you want to fly for more than 31 minutes at a time, you’re better off with the Fly More Combo package, which costs a bit more at £1,169.
Visually it doesn’t look too different from the Mavic Air 2. It’s slightly larger, measuring 97 x 180 x 77mm (WDH) when folded, and weighs 25g more (595g), but from a practical point of view it’s not as big as the DJI Mavic Air. 2 and the DJI Mavic Mini, Air 2S use the same DJI Fly app. The DJI Air 2S can now detect objects above, in front of, behind and below.
The DJI Air 2S reduces the megapixel count to a maximum of 20 MP and doubles the sensor size. It is able to record 10-bit D-Log M footage for easier color correction during editing. The other new features are not so important. Fly app then edits the video for you. In low light.
Finally, DJI has brought improved image stabilization to the Air 2S in the form of RockSteady EIS, which ensures super smooth videos and clear photos even in windy conditions.
DJI Air 2S review: What is it like to set up and fly?
Setup is simple: just download the DJI Fly app to your phone (available for Android and iOS), connect the phone to the remote control using the included cable and mount it in the clip on the top.
In all modes, the Air 2S flies as expected and responds immediately to remote control inputs, increasing confidence.
It’s also surprisingly quiet: DJI says it redesigned the propellers so they’re less noticeable on windless days.
40Wh DJI Air 2S battery
Flies for up to 31 minutes per charge.
As for the obstacle avoidance system, it’s impressive as always, and the addition of a pair of upward-facing cameras means the DJI Air 2S is harder to bump into than before. Be extra careful when strafing back and forth or performing spiral or circular maneuvers , but it’ll give you some peace of mind.
The system is pretty effective, too. DJI Air 2S review: How good is the camera?
The new camera is a highlight of the Air 2S. It records 5K video at 30 fps, has an 88-degree field of view, and an f/2.8 aperture.

FIMI launches X8 mini drone to compete directly with DJI Mini 2

Although DJI has not encountered particular challenges in the field of drones in recent years, that does not mean that other companies have not tried. Xiaomi brand FIMI has announced the X8 Mini, a direct competitor to the DJI Mini 2.As originally pointed out by Drone DJ and reported by DPReview, the X8 Mini looks extremely similar to DJI’s latest offering. Not only is this the design of the X8 Mini, the wings look almost identical the way they are folded, but they are also almost identical in size when unfolded. Both drones weigh under 250 grams (although the X8 Mini is lighter at just 245 grams), support 12-megapixel photos and 4K video at 30 frames per second, 100 Mbps, and both drones can Take JPEG and Raw .While the camera systems may be nearly identical, DJI has been able to capture the lion’s share of the drone market largely due to its products’ operational simplicity and ability to stabilize footage. To this end, FIMI integrates a three-axis gimbal to smooth footage and has a variety of special features built in, supported by onboard software. First, it has a special night mode that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to make photos and videos look better. While not explicitly stated, the mention of an AI-powered night mode sounds familiar, especially considering FIMI is a Xiaomi brand. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the X8 Mini integrate Night Mode AI from the Xiaomi Mi 11, the first smartphone to implement BlinkAI’s impressive technology. It also supports one-click video modes such as time-lapse shooting, panoramic stitching, and live broadcast. As mentioned, the X8 Mini is very light at just 245 grams, but that’s only when equipped with the specific “Pro”
DJI Mini 2 Drone Battery
battery. According to Drone DJ, the M8 Mini with the standard M8 Mini battery weights closer to 258 grams, a difference of about 200MAh, and this 11-gram weight difference makes the flight time difference between them by a few minutes. While the more powerful  FIMI X8 Mini battery does make the drone weighs more than 250 grams, and that puts it in a different legal flight category, there’s not a huge trade-off in either direction, and it may just come down to personal preference.
