Should You Buy the New iPhone XS?

Only if you fall into one of these five categories.

The new iPhone XS is expensive. Like last year’s iPhone X, it costs $999. The larger XS Maxcosts $100 more—and if you opt for additional storage capacity, its price could reach nearly $1,500. With the days of carrier-subsidized hardware purchases but a shiny memory, that’s a lot of money to pay out of pocket. It makes the question “Should I buy this year’s iPhone?” all the more important.
For some, the answer is a resounding no. Unless you’re the most devoted Apple aficionado, purchasers of the 2017 iPhone X don’t need to upgrade. With Apple’s first $1,000 iPhone, the company set the stage for devices meant to last longer than the old two-year renewal cycle. The device has an excellent camera, speedy processor, and strong glass on its front and rear faces—the iPhone XS just slightly improves on all that. For those with slightly older devices, upgrading to iOS 12 may also satisfy the itch for a faster, more efficient device without spending a cent.
Based on the device’s specs and feature set, and the consensus from early iPhone XS reviews, there are some iOS users who could benefit from the upgrade. Here are the five categories of people who should most strongly consider making this purchase.

If iOS 12 doesn’t fix your problems

iOS 12 became available for download on Monday and is compatible with devices as old as the iPhone 5S. If you’re considering getting a new phone, give it a spin first—those who’ve been using the public and final betas of iOS 12 have found it largely improves performance of their older iOS devices.
If your main issue with your current device is that it’s slow or buggy, that’s a software-related issue iOS 12 could fix. A week or two of use should give you a good idea of whether the operating system update was what you needed. However, if your problems with your device are more hardware-related—the camera takes poor-quality photos, the phone is scratched beyond recognition, or buttons are no longer working properly—a new phone may be in order.

If you’re prone to dropping your phone

When it comes to durability, not all iPhones are created equal. Despite its looks, and its glass back, the iPhone X actually proved to be one of the more drop-resistant phones.
The iPhone XS and XS Max should build on that. Apple says it included the most durable glassever used in a smartphone—possibly Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6, which Cult of Mac reported would turn the 2018 iPhone’s display “into a tank.”
While you’re likely to incur scratches, the new phone should, in theory, be more drop-resistant than older models. If your phone is at least two years old and its display is spiderwebbed (or you’ve dropped hundreds of dollars on replacement displays), the new, stronger iPhone XS may be in order.

If you’re an iPhoneographer

Quality photographs can make a big difference on social media, and smartphones continue to inch their way to the quality of more expensive standalone cameras. If smartphone photography is a big part of what you do (or aspire to do) professionally—or it’s otherwise your top concern about your phone—the iPhone XS or XS Max could be worth the upgrade. While these phones have the same dual 12-megapixel telephoto and wide-angle lenses on back and 7-megapixel camera up front as the iPhone X, Apple has improved its image signal processor so that the device can capture better photos than its predecessor.
For TechCrunch’s Matthew Panzarino, it’s the new Smart HDR feature that sets this camera over the top. “For a company as prone to hyperbole and Maximum Force Enthusiasm about its products, I think that [Apple has] dramatically undersold how much improved photos are from the iPhone X to the iPhone XS,” Panzarino said. “Your camera roll as a whole will just suddenly start looking like you’re a better picture taker, with no intervention from you.”

If you can count it as a tax write-off

Is owning the new iPhone an integral part of your job and what you do? If you can expense the device, whether on your personal taxes or to your employer, by all means, upgrade away.
And if you have the option, you may as well upgrade to the 512 GB storage variant so you never, ever having to worry about that annoying “Storage Almost Full” notification on your iPhone again. Good luck explaining that necessity to your accountant, though.

If you need that status symbol

Oh my god, if you don’t get the new iPhone, will it be social suicide? Well, you better get the iPhone XS Max in the new gold coloration so that anyone who sees you can tell immediately that you have the newest, largest iPhone in existence.
If you’re worried that the gold model may come across as tacky, rest assured: Apple has developed a classy hue with just a hint of rose. (It’s “less ‘pawn shop gold’ and more ‘this is very expensive’ gold,” according to TechCrunch). Will it match your existing gold iPhone accessories? Probably not, so you’ll need to replace those too.
If you own an older device (2+ years old) and are still on the fence, there’s no rush. In the past, some hardware and software issues have taken a few weeks to crop up on new iPhones. Waiting also gives you time to assess whether the slightly cheaper iPhone XR may better suit your needs. The iPhone XR isn’t available for preorder until Oct.19.
While their incremental improvements over last year’s iPhone X aren’t particularly earth-shattering, the 2018 iPhones do seem like quality devices that could support their hefty sticker price with longevity.

Apple Watch Series 4: The reviews are in

After several days of testing, reviewers around the world are sharing their impressions of the redesigned, re-engineered Apple Watch Series 4:
The New York Times
“The new Apple Watch is perhaps one of the most significant developments in wearable gadgets in years.”
Women’s Health
“The new Apple Watch health and fitness features make it a powerful device for your overall well-being. That’s because game-changing bells and whistles have elevated the Apple Watch Series 4 from an investment-worthy health accessory to a sleek and beautiful device that actually might save your life.”
USA Today
“Bigger display, fall detection and ECG may make it the time to upgrade.”
Hodinkee
“It’s cohesive, it’s ambitious, and it might just encourage you to reshape your habits and behaviors for the better. If you still haven’t given the Apple Watch a shot and you’ve been waiting for the right moment, this is that moment. Go for it.”
iJustine
“This screen makes it feel like I’m watching a freaking IMAX movie!”
Men’s Journal
“Honestly, this is really not a commercial for Apple, but more a commercial for cool things I happen to like — and this is one of them — but the fact that they put some thought into making something that basically is looking out for you is a pretty great move.” — Jon Hamm
TechCrunch
“Apple Watch is an elegant solution from both a hardware and software standpoint. It walks the key wearable line of being engaging when necessary and fading into the background the rest of the time.”
Vogue
“Apple has also introduced a glitzy new color, gold-toned stainless steel, which pairs perfectly with the new iPhone XS, for those who like to keep their accessories in line.”
Refinery29
“This is the first Apple Watch that really feels like it lives up to Apple’s original vision for the wearable. The bigger display, improved speaker quality, gorgeous watch faces, and advanced health and fitness features make the $399 starting price seem worth it.”
The Independent (UK)
“The design is just gorgeous and the bright, vivid display with its narrow, curved bezels, looks sensational. The uptick in performance power is noticeable at every level and the increased health qualities and fitness monitoring are hugely welcome. If you’ve held back from getting an Apple Watch because you thought it wasn’t quite there yet, well, it is now.”
Wareable (UK)
“The ease and availability of cellular, the accuracy and usefulness of its heart rate monitor and the breadth of its fitness ecosystem — these are the areas that have left rivals in its dust. Add Apple Pay, SOS, fall detection, the heart rate alerts — it’s incredible to think that the Apple Watch Series 4 will, undoubtedly, save at least one person’s life.”
MobileSyrup (Canada)
“Apple has managed to define what the modern smartwatch is. Rather than a device designed to replace your smartphone, the Apple Watch is a companion that features expansive health functionality and delivers notifications to your wrist.”
Best Health (Canada)

“I’m obsessed with the heart rate features. I was already using my Apple Watch to check on my heart rate during exercise, and I love that the Series 4 will send me a notification if my heart rate appears low.”
Vogue Australia
“It’s absolutely incredible what Apple has done in just a few short years with a piece of technology you wear on your wrist.”
The Straits Times (Singapore)
“The Apple Watch Series 4 cements Apple’s dominance in the smartwatch arena with its sleek design, useful health features and superb performance.”
Customers can order Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular and GPS) on apple.com and in the Apple Store app. Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular and GPS) will be available starting Friday, September 21, from apple.com, the Apple Store app and Apple Stores.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Catches Fire: Galaxy Note 7 All Over Again?

A Samsung Galaxy Note 9 unit burst into flames inside a woman’s purse, bringing back memories of the Galaxy Note 7 exploding battery fiasco that stretched from 2016 to 2017.
It is too early to say that the Galaxy Note 9 is suffering from the same quality issues that plagued the Galaxy Note 7, but it should be very concerning for Samsung to have its latest flagship device linked with the failed smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Bursts Into Flames

Real estate agent Diane Chung from Long Island, New York claimed in a lawsuit against Samsung that she suffered a “traumatic” experience when her Galaxy Note 9 suddenly burst into flames inside her purse.
Chung was riding in an elevator just after midnight last Sept. 3 when she felt her brand new Galaxy Note 9 getting “extremely hot” while using it. She placed it in her purse, but then heard a “whistling and screeching sound,” followed by thick smoke. Chung placed her bag on the elevator floor and tried to remove its contents, burning her fingers as she grabbed the smoking Galaxy Note 9.
The woman started to become “extremely panicked,” as she was alone in the elevator. She pressed the elevator buttons while the thick smoke was making it hard for her to see. Fortunately, the elevator reached the lobby, where she kicked the Galaxy Note 9 out of the lift. The smartphone kept burning, until a helpful man wrapped it around a piece of cloth and dropped it in water.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Exploding Batteries

A Samsung spokesman said that the company has not received any reports of similar incidents involving the Galaxy Note 9, which should be good news for now. The company certainly does not want a repeat of the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, which plagued the company for a year starting in 2016.
Samsung lost billions of dollars due to the Galaxy Note 7 exploding battery issue, with the company’s investigation revealing that two different battery manufacturers came with two different flaws. Samsung implemented new safety standards to make sure that the debacle will never happen again, and started working on developing solid-state batteries to replace the problematic lithium-ion batteries.
Record-breaking Galaxy Note 8 preorders revealed that Samsung fans already forgot about the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco after a year. However, apparently, all it takes is one Samsung smartphone catching fire to bring up all these memories.
Hopefully, the Galaxy Note 9 that caught fire was a fluke, and that the situation will not devolve into the smartphone following the flaming footsteps of the Galaxy Note 7.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro leak shows four cameras and display notch

It’s fair to say that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has been a bestseller. The phone launched in India in February, and its mid-range list of specifications included the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, 4GB/6GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, 5.99-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) IPS LCD, dual 12MP + 5MP (depth sensing) rear cameras, 20MP front-facing camera, and a 4,000mAh battery. It shipped with MIUI 9 on top of Android 7.1 Nougat, but it has since received an update to Android 8.1 Oreo with Project Treble support.
The Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera shares the same device code-name (whyred) with the Redmi Note 5 Pro, but it is sold in different markets (China and Europe), and has differing camera specifications and network bands. Both phones should not be confused with the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus (vince), which is branded as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 in India.
A few months ago, Xiaomi India announced that the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro have together sold more than five million units. Seven months have passed since the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s launch, however, and Xiaomi has been developing a successor, code-named “tulip.” We have known about the device’s existence in firmware files since April. Now, leaked photos of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro have appeared online.
The original source of the leaked photos is unclear. The photos show the box of the Redmi Note 6 Pro, along with live photos of the device itself. However, we were able to determine that the leak is a legitimate one. This is because the IMEI visible on the box is a real IMEI. The model number that the IMEI page shows (M1806E7TG) also matches the Wi-Fi certification that ties the _E7T to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro name.
The live photos of the Redmi Note 6 Pro show that the phone will be available with in at least two variants: 3GB of RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB of RAM with 64GB storage. It will be powered by the same Snapdragon 636 SoC that powers the Redmi Note 5 Pro.
The Redmi Note 6 Pro will have a 6.26-inch Full HD+ (2280×1080) notched display with a 19:9 aspect ratio, marking a first for the Redmi Note series. The Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro/Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite already has a notched display, but the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s top and side bezels look noticeably smaller.
Interestingly, the phone will have four cameras in total. The rear cameras will be 12MP + 5MP (depth sensing), while the dual front-facing cameras will be 20MP + 2MP. The 2MP secondary front-facing camera will probably be used for depth sensing. The 12MP primary rear camera will have 1.4μm pixels and dual pixel autofocus like the Poco F1.
The Redmi Note 6 Pro will be powered by a 4,000mAh battery, just like the Redmi Note 5 Pro. In terms of software, it will likely ship with MIUI 10 on top of Android Oreo. Design-wise, the Redmi Note 6 Pro looks very similar to its predecessor as it still has plastic caps on the top and bottom of the back. This means that it’s not a true metal unibody unlike the Xiaomi Mi A2, which has a full aluminium unibody construction with discreet antenna bands.
A YouTube channel named VideoWaliSarkar already did a hands-on video of the Redmi Note 6 Pro. The video confirms the fact that the device will be powered by the Snapdragon 636, and it confirms the rest of the leaked specifications as well. The blue color variant was shown off on video, and in terms of the design, it looks very similar to the Poco F1, with thin side bezels and a relatively thick chin at the bottom.
As of now, the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s launch date is unknown, but it’s probable that the phone will launch soon. On account of previous pricing of the Redmi Note series, it’s also fair to expect it to be priced affordably. We expect to learn more about the phone in the coming weeks.

19 Things You Can Do in iOS 12 That You Couldn’t Do Before

Happy iOS 12 day, everybody—after being announced back in June, the final version of Apple’s mobile OS gets pushed out to eager iPhone and iPad users across the world today. You’ll need an iPhone 5C or newer or a 2013 iPad or newer (anything that could run iOS 11, essentially), and when you’ve got the software installed, here’s everything you can do.

1) Create your own Memoji

iOS 12 brings with it some new Animojis and more detailed face mapping (you can now… stick out your tongue), but the big addition as far as animated cartoon avatars go is the introduction of the Memoji: your face, emoji-ized. From the Messages app, tap the monkey face Animoji button, then the Plusbutton, then start crafting your new digital avatar.

2) Add stickers and text

Hey, iOS 12 is fun! If you’re sending video or taking a snap inside Messages or FaceTime, you can now slap a host of filters, stickers, and text effects on top, as well as Animoji and Memoji. To get to the good stuff, tap the Effects button when you’ve launched the Camera through Messages or FaceTime (you’ll need to tap the display once in FaceTime to see it).

3) Spot repeated passwords

iOS 12 includes a few improvements for managing passwords—it can suggest a strong password for you when you sign up for something new, for example (just tap Use Strong Password when prompted). It can also help you spot passwords you’ve reused too often: Go to Settings then Passwords & Accountsand Website & App Passwords to take a look.

4) Clear notifications quickly

At long last, iOS 12 introduces (optional) grouped notifications, so you can clear them from the lock screen in batches with a swipe to the left and a tap on Clear All. You can also get alerts delivered quietly straight to the Notification Center, skipping the lock screen: Swipe left on a group, tap Manage, then choose Delivery Quietly (or Settings for more options).

5) Share photos more easily

Apple’s improved photo AI will now recognize the people who keep appearing in your photos, and recommend you share snaps of them through the Photos app. All this and much more is available in the new For You tab inside Photos—you’ll see your best photos featured, as well as the existing Memories collections all together on the same screen.

6) Search for photos more easily

Apple has upgraded the search capabilities inside Photos too, with a little sprinkling of AI, though it hasn’t gone into too many details. What we do know is that searches should be more accurate, and start offering suggestions as you type, as well as giving you more specific stuff to search for—like the name of a certain coffee shop you visited, for instance.

7) Tackle your smartphone addiction

New to iOS 12 is Screen Time, which you’ll find as an extra option on the Settings menu: You can see which apps you use most often, how regularly you unlock your phone, set limits on the use of certain apps (or app categories), schedule Do Not Disturb times for your device, and more besides. We’ve written about the new features in more detail here.

8) Browse for ebooks more easily

Apple iBooks gets a revamp with iOS 12 and becomes simply Apple Books. In addition to the name change, the app gets a new lick of paint to make it easier to navigate. There’s also a new Reading Now pane that combines your current reads with some smart recommendations from the Apple store, including ebooks popular with other users.

9) Measure objects with augmented reality

One of the new and unfamiliar icons added to your home screen in iOS 12 will be the augmented reality measuring app called Measure. Launch it and you’ll find it pretty easy to use—tap the Plus button to start and stop measuring and to combine points together (measurements appear automatically). Apple has this tool covered, thanks developers.

10) Enjoy shared AR experiences

Speaking of developers, the new and improved ARKit 2 that comes as part of iOS 12 will make AR apps even more powerful, though it might take some time for such apps to start appearing. AR experiences can now be shared with other iOS 12 users, for example, or kept persistent—tied to an object or location, ready to reappear in the same spot in the future.

11) Be disturbed less

Do Not Disturb isn’t new but it is enhanced in iOS 12: Launch it from Control Center and you can keep it on until you leave your current location or until the current event in your calendar ends (as well as the usual timed options). There’s also a new Bedtime mode (in Do Not Disturb in Settings) that dims the lock screen and hides notifications completely.

12) Get more from Siri

As usual, Siri gets a little smarter in iOS 12: Apple says Siri is now better at answering questions about motorsport, celebrities, and food (try “how much caffeine is there in coffee?”). As an added bonus you can translate phrases between over 50 languages now, and even ask Siri to remember one of your passwords (it’s shown on screen, not read out).

13) Browse the web in peace

iOS 12 comes with a few extra web tracking protections to build on the work done to combat aggressive cookies in iOS 11. Safari now disables device fingerprinting, which can identify your phone or tablet to marketers even if they can’t identify you, and also disables the tracking code built into those share buttons you see everywhere on the internet.

14) Use Google Maps in CarPlay

Once your iPhone is upgraded to iOS 12, you can use third-party mapping apps with your CarPlay unit—including Google Maps, if you’d rather it was Google getting you from A to B. When you select a third-party navigation app in CarPlay, it displays the base layer, with CarPlay controls overlaid on top.

15) Update iOS automatically

Apple quietly added an automatic update option to iOS 12, but it’s not all that clear just how it differs from the old method, which was already pretty well automated. You can find the switch under General and Software Update in Settings: You’ll still see a notification, but updates will be installed automatically overnight if the phone is charging and on wifi.

16) Get more from Stocks

Many of the Apple apps included in iOS get small tweaks with iOS 12, but we won’t mention them all here. One refreshed app that is worth a look is Stocks: It now boasts more details about your chosen markets, more business stories from Apple News, more options for customizing the look of the interface… and it’s now on the iPad, as well.

17) Use gestures on your iPad

Speaking of Apple’s tablets, iPads running iOS 12 can now take advantage of two gestures introduced with the iPhone X: Swiping up from the bottom of the screen to go back to the home screen, and swiping down from the top-right corner to bring up Control Center. Anyone would think Apple was about to ditch the Home button on the iPad Pro models…

18) Build your own Siri Shortcuts

The new Siri Shortcuts app is likely to launch at any moment but isn’t in the first iOS 12 release: It lets you combine multiple app actions into one Siri command, so you can tell Siri you’re heading home and it will load up directions, turn up your smart thermostat in the house, and message family members saying you’re on your way (for example).

19) Make group video calls in FaceTime

And lastly another feature we have to file under “coming soon” is group video calls in FaceTime. When it does hit—”later this Fall” according to Apple—you’ll be able to enjoy video chats with up to 32 people at once, complete with Animoji, Memoji and everything else. We just hope Group FaceTime doesn’t go the same way as the AirPower charging mat.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Explodes In A Handbag

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Reportedly Explodes In Women’s Handbag

Aside from the brand new Apple iPhones, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is arguably one of the most desired phones currently on the market. With it releasing such a short time ago the early reaction to it has been quite positive. It seems, however, that a few ghosts (thought put to rest) might be rearing their head again for Samsung.
In a report via CNET, a woman owner has reported that her phone literally exploded whilst in her handbag.

What Happened?

The woman from America has issued a lawsuit against Samsung. In it, she claims that she noticed that the phone started to get unusually hot, but clearly didn’t think too much about it and put it in her handbag. Shortly afterwards though she says that she heard a ‘whistling sound’ and eventually smoke began to erupt.
She tipped her handbag onto the floor and the phone wasn’t extinguished until a person placed it in a bucket of water.
This is, however, all very nightmarish for Samsung who, you might remember, had major problems with the batteries in their Note 7 models.

What Has Samsung Said?

In a statement DJ Koh, head of Samsung’s mobile business has said: “The battery in the Galaxy Note 9 is safer than ever. Users do not have to worry about the batteries anymore. Samsung takes customer safety very seriously. And we stand behind the quality of the millions of Galaxy devices in use in the United States. We have not received any reports of similar incidents involving a Galaxy Note 9 device. And we are investigating the matter.”
Given the volatility of lithium-ion batteries, it is possible that this was an isolated incident. It is equally possible that the battery may have been damaged. Dare I say, due to an error on the part of the owner. Hopefully, this will be an isolated incident.

What This Apple Supplier Told Us About the 2019 iPhones

Look for a big wireless boost in the successor to the iPhone XR.

On Sept. 12, Apple  launched three new iPhones. At the high-end of its product stack, Apple introduced the iPhone XS — the direct successor to last year’s iPhone X — and the iPhone XS Max, a variant of the iPhone XS with an even bigger screen. For more price-sensitive customers, Apple offered a product called the iPhone XR, which incorporates many of the new technologies found in the iPhone XS/XS Max, but uses cheaper components in some cases to reduce the cost structure of the device.
One way Apple seemingly chose to save money with the iPhone XR relative to the higher-end iPhone XS models is in the cellular subsystem. Apple says that the iPhone XS/XS Max support “gigabit-class LTE with 4×4 MIMO and [licensed assisted access].” The iPhone XR, on the other hand, simply supports “LTE Advanced” — just as Apple’s 2017 flagship smartphones do.
Apple’s choice not to endow the iPhone XR with the same cellular capabilities of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have led longtime Apple chip supplier Broadcom  to admit that it lost some of the business in this year’s iPhone lineup.
“Nonetheless, from time-to-time, not that often, but time-to-time, the same technology platform used by our customer may expand beyond one generation,” Broadcom CEO Hock Tan explained on the company’s Sept. 6 earnings conference call. “And when this happens, it does create an opportunity for a customer to temporarily use lower performance alternatives in selected SKUs.”
Tan did say, though, that “every indication we have is that the cadence of annual platform upgrades will resume in the upcoming 2019 smartphone generation.”
This seems to tell us, then, that Apple’s planning a wireless technology upgrade for the next iteration of the iPhone XR.

Apple’s straightforward iPhone XR upgrade path

Apple clearly had to do a significant amount of engineering work to get the iPhone XR ready to go for the current product cycle. Relative to its predecessors — iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus — it sports a new casing design and a new display in addition to upgraded internals. The next iteration of the iPhone XR should be a more straightforward proposition — I expect Apple to keep the same basic design but deliver internal specification updates.
One of those updates, if Broadcom’s take on the situation is right, should be a move to a more advanced cellular subsystem.
What isn’t totally clear, though, is whether Apple will continue to differentiate the successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Plus from the iPhone XR through wireless capabilities or if it’ll endow them all with the same capabilities. Indeed, one reason Tan’s comments could indicate the latter is that if Apple were to simply give the next iPhone XR the same cellular capabilities as this year’s iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, then Apple would, in effect, be reusing one of the platforms that it used in the current product cycle.
I still expect Apple to continue to significantly differentiate the iPhone XS/XS Max successors from the iPhone XR successor, but cellular capabilities might not be one of the ways it does that next year.
Motley Fool Issues Rare “Double Down” Buy Alert
Motley Fool CEO, Tom Gardner, just issued a rare “double down” buy alert on one remarkable California company.
And here’s the real kicker…
Despite this company’s jaw-dropping success over the past few years, most investors have still never even heard of this company’s name!
That’s right, while everyone on CNBC is busy talking about blue-chip stocks like Apple and Facebook, this significantly smaller (yet faster-growing!) company is flying almost completely under the radar.
And Tom is so convinced that he’s right with this new “double down” buy alert…that he’s got $523,111 of The Motley Fool’s money on the line…

Asus ZenBook Pro 15 vs. Dell XPS 15

These 15-inch laptops are both powerhouses, but which should you buy?

Asus is going out on a limb with its new ZenBook Pro 15 UX580, introducing an innovative twist on the old-school touchpad. Called the ScreenPad, this new input device layers a touchscreen IPS LCD over the usual swiping surface, adding in some special functionality to make for a potentially more efficient and productive workflow.
But that’s not all the ZenBook Pro 15 has in its bag of tricks. It also sports the fastest notebook processor around, the very fast Core i9-8950HK that promises unparalleled performance. Is all of this enough to give it the edge over our favorite 15-inch notebook, the Dell XPS 15? Read on to find out.

DESIGN

The ZenBook Pro 15 UX580 looks just like every other modern ZenBook, and that’s not a bad thing. It has the same attractive and iconic concentric circle swirl, the same rose gold diamond-cut chamfered edges, and the same quality build as so many recent ZenBooks. Only an unusually flexible keyboard deck mars what would otherwise be a rock-solid build. The bezels are small enough to give a modern look and feel, and the 0.75 inch thickness and 4.1 pound weight is competitive with the rest of the field. In terms of input, we found the keyboard to offer slightly less travel than some competitors, but with a snappy mechanism that’s comfortable for long typing sessions. And the ScreenPad is buggy out of the gate, but it still promises an innovative new way to control your notebook with a handful of special modes and dedicated apps and utilities.
Dell’s 2018 XPS 15 hasn’t changed much aesthetically over the last couple of years, and that’s not a bad thing — it’s just as conservatively attractive as always. It’s formed from machined aluminum and carbon fiber that create a robust and particularly comfortable laptop to use and carry around from site to site. Dell hasn’t engineered the thinnest notebook around, at 0.70 inches at its thickest point, and it’s not the lightest either at 4.5 pounds with a huge 97 watt-hour battery. Even so, it’s among the most diminutive 15.6-inch notebooks given its InfinityEdge bezels — which unfortunately mean the webcam is wedged below the display for an unflattering up-the-nose view. The keyboard is excellent, with sufficient travel an a precise and responsive mechanism enabling fast and accurate typing, and the Microsoft Precision touchpad is large and comfortable.
We like the ZenBook’s elegant look and feel, but the XPS 15 wins out for being completely solid and sporting a better keyboard. That innovative ScreenPad could sway things in the ZenBook’s favor, though, if Asus can work out the bugs and add some polish.

PERFORMANCE

The ZenBook Pro 15 is built around Intel’s fastest mobile processor, the 8th-generation six-core, 12-thread Core i9-8950HK that runs at 45 watts and can ramp up to some insane speeds. It’s a fast CPU, but it also creates some heat that’s hard to manage. Ultimately, it’s faster than the more common Core i7-8750H, but not by much. Asus chose a competent PCIe solid-state drive (SSD) for the ZenBook Pro, which is neither the fastest nore the slowest we’ve tested, and that’s fed by some fast DDR4 memory. Finally, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is a solid entry-level gaming CPU, and it allows the ZenBook to support some decent — albeit somewhat inconsistent — gaming performance.
The Dell XPS 15 uses the aforementioned Core i7-8750H processor, an 8th-generation 45 watt part that’s also powered by six cores and 12 threads. The Dell also enjoys a speedy PCIe SSD and high-speed RAM, which is paired with an Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti Max Q that punches slightly above its weight class when running some of today’s popular titles at 1080p and medium graphical details. The XPS 15 is plenty fast — almost as fast as the ZenBook Pro 15, in fact — but it also runs cooler and more quietly.
And then there are the displays. On paper, the ZenBook Pro 15 and XPS 15 should be equal. Both enjoy 4K UHD panels with wide color gamuts, and they both promise good accuracy and strong contrast. But Dell delivers whereas Asus kind of dropped the ball, with the former offering a more accurate display with significantly higher contrast and brightness. Dell also offers two options, Full HD and 4K panels aimed at being bright and colorful. Both the ZenBook and the XPS 15 offer great displays for productivity work, but the Dell is much better for professionals that care about color accuracy.
The XPS 15 wins out by being almost as fast as the ZenBok Pro 15 but doing so more quietly and without burning up. And its display is better, too.

PORTABILITY

Given all that performance that’s packed inside a chassis that’s not the thinnest around, we expected Asus to squeeze in some serious battery capacity. Unfortunately, the company only managed to equip the ZenBook Pro 15 with 71 watt-hours, which isn’t a ton of juice for such a demanding CPU and high-resolution display.
For its part, Dell equipped the XPS 15 with a massive 97 watt-hours worth of battery capacity, helping to justify its higher weight. And Dell’s investment in batteries paid off. In our suite of tests, the XPS 15 outlasted the ZenBook Pro 15 by a wide margin. We tested the the Full HD version of the XPS 15, and it lasted for twice as long on our most intensive Basemark web benchmark test and almost three times as long when browsing the web and watching video. We suspect that the 4K version of the XPS 15 would last for “only” twice as long.
Both of these notebooks are large and solid 15.6-inch notebooks and so take up some space in a backpack. But the XPS 15 will last for a full working day and maybe even longer, whereas the ZenBook Pro 15 will leave you wanting. The Dell wins this round.

CONCLUSION

The ZenBook Pro 15 costs $2,300 for the Core i9-8950HQ, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, 4K display, and the ScreenPad. You can also spend $1,800 for a Core i7-8750H and a normal touchpad. That makes it a premium notebook but still less expensive than the XPS 15, which comes in at $2,900 for the Core i9, 32GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD. But you can also opt for a much less powerful configuration with Core i5 and 56 watt0hour battery for $1,000, giving the Dell a lower price of entry.
The ZenBook Pro 15 brings some innovation with its ScreenPad and some power with its Core i9. But the XPS 15 is almost as fast and its considerably more refined — and thus it’s the notebook we’d rather carry around with us.

Galaxy Note 9 battery overheats, smokes out, now subject of lawsuit

A New York woman has launched a lawsuit against Samsung after her Galaxy Note 9 “became extremely hot” and began emitting thick smoke. The issue, which the company says is the only one reported, has triggered memories of the battery explosions in dozens of Galaxy Note 7 devices. The New York Post reports Diane Chung was riding the elevator up to her apartment in Bayside, Queens, when her phone became too warm to use. After putting it in her bag, “she heard a whistling and screeching sound, and she noticed thick smoke,” court papers claim. She had burned her fingers trying to retrieve the phone and it, along with the other contents of her bag, poured onto the floor.

Alone in the elevator, Chung became “extremely panicked” and began pressing buttons before the car stopped at the lobby. She kicked the device out of the cabin and a passerby helped douse the device with water.

The plaintiff claims that Samsung should have known that the Note 9 was “defective” and seeks damages and a sales injunction on the phone.

The 4,000mAh cell on the Galaxy Note 9 is the largest to be featured on the Note series of devices. It follows the 3,300mAh battery on the Note 8, which has had few reports of thermal overrun malfunctions, and the 3,500mAh unit on the Note 7, of which more than 2.5 million devices have been recalled. Independent analysis points to a design flaw as the cause while the chaebol’s internal investigation found poor battery manufacturing as the primary culprit.

Samsung has since heavily promoted that it has a multi-stage battery check process for all of its devices. A spokesperson told the Post that the company has “not received any reports of similar incidents involving a Galaxy Note9 device and we are investigating the matter.”
