Asus ZenBook Duo UX481 review: Ultraportable dual-purpose computer

ASUS ZenBook Duo UX481 is goodAsus ZenBook Duo UX481 BatteryDurability and usability, keyboard features and small touch features, it is the best portable device in the 4L laptop category. I really like the ASUS ZenBook Duo UX481 laptop for its portability and intuitive interface. Note that the touch of the keyboard and keyboard has a great impact on the font, and secondly, there are two 4K monitors (not Sony HDR TV) and a 1080p laptop plus a small monitor in the car, I think it will be a good choice. . The latest Asus laptop models are supported by the company’s ErgoLift, which can remove their souls from our bodies. Naked. Since it is a perfect and very unified accessory (two touchpads with different thin sections at the same time), it is a coordinated portable attacker. If you choose the complete Génération Verront box set, add the second box set of your choice. The touch and 1080p resolution of the screen are excellent, and Asus confirms that the specifications of the device are 90% portable. Relationship physics. The ZenBook Duo has a 4-book capacity, an open pocket size of 12.7 x 8.8 x 0.8, and a unique design for a portable device. For example, the MSI Prestige 14 weighs 2.8 pounds and has a 0.6 pocket. Review: MSI Megabook S250

The Megabook S250 is a different kind of portable than my usual Dell. You may have seen this black Megabook S270 on the pages of HEXUS recently. The S270 is powered by an Athlon 64 or Turion processor and features a 12-inch widescreen LCD in a tiny chassis, making it one of the smallest 64-bit laptops you can buy at the time of writing.
The S250 has the same chassis, but with a Pentium-M under the hood, this time in white. The S260 is the same PM notebook, just in black.
From what I can tell, the chassis is aluminum; it’s lightweight, cool to the touch, and definitely not plastic. Lifting the lid, secured with a nice spring clip, reveals a tiny notebook, but not so small that it would be too small to use for long periods of time. I’ve used the likes of Toshiba Librettos in the past, with screens under 12 inches and keyboards so small you wouldn’t dare type on them for long periods of time, but the Megabook S250 is no such beast.
The keyboard retains decent-sized keys, with only the Enter and Backspace keys being smaller than I’d like. It places the Fn function-key modifier key a little too close to the Control key on the bottom left, but that’s a quirk of all recent laptops that I’ve learned to tolerate. I usually hit Fn when I extend my pinky to press the Control key, but I don’t blame myself when I do that these days. At least, not in front of the kind lady at the visa office who’s currently processing my application.
The function keys on the front edge of the keyboard are the only ones that really sacrifice size for space, but unless you remap them to alphanumeric keys, you won’t get annoyed. Using a US keyboard layout, which I then remapped to a UK layout, I could only type the backslash character using the character map, but that’s the only character I use regularly that I can’t type without help. Of course, if you buy a UK-localized model, you won’t have the same problem. The keyboard itself is a great typing experience, even for long typing sessions, although the keys are noisy and the left side of the keyboard doesn’t seem as firmly fixed to the chassis as the right side.
Above the front edge of the keyboard is a very Mac-esque power button surrounded by a white LED light to indicate device power. Four fixed function keys, two on each side, provide quick access to the default mail, web browser (the button is adorned with an Internet Explorer “E,” which is really offensive), and file search, and the fourth function key activates and deactivates the radio for WiFi functionality.
The touchpad is smaller than I usually like and is very sensitive to accidentally brushing your finger lightly across its surface, but it’s impressively precise, and I didn’t hate using it, as I do with Dell computers. The mouse buttons are small, but still easy to press, and even on their front edge, I can press them with just the edge of my thumb. This fits the way I like to use a laptop, as I rest my hands on the keyboard and wrist rest, which I can’t do with other laptops I’ve used recently, and to some extent, my Dell computer.
There’s plenty of room on either side of the touchpad to rest your wrists or palms, and the chassis only gets warm from body heat, not from the mechanical heat generated by the device. A set of status LEDs sit between the lid’s ports, and the light they emit is very diffuse, a nice change from the ultra-bright LEDs that mar many consumer electronics.
The screen measures 12 inches diagonally, has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, and is too reflective for my taste. As I sat in the embassy and the sun shone through the thick curtains onto the ornate barred windows, I could easily see my ugly face on the screen, which I really hated. Screens of this type are usually very bright – this one is – and have high contrast – this one isn’t great – but if I were buying this Megabook with my own money, I wouldn’t sacrifice it for reflectivity. With a good viewing angle range, I could tilt the screen toward me and minimize the impact without too much of a drop in visibility, but brightness dropped, and the device’s screen light seemed to shine only when you were looking straight at it. Still,
It’s a perfect resolution for this screen size, and I enjoyed browsing the web and writing with plenty of pixel headroom. I wish my 20-inch LCD at home had this pixel-per-inch ratio. For this reviewer, 12-inch laptops are king in terms of screen size and, generally, pixel real estate.
Unlike most laptops, the rear edge of the device is devoid of a bank of ports. That space is where the removableMegabook laptops battery of the Megabook S250, S260, and AMD-powered S270 resides. As such, ports are spread out along the sides and front. The left side has room for a DVD burner tray, an integrated media reader slot (which accepts SD, MMC, and MemoryStick), a USB 2.0 port, and a PC Card slot. The front has microphone and headphone and non-powered FireWire 400 ports, while the right side has a pair of USB 2.0, 100 Mibit/sec Ethernet and modem ports, VGA out, and a port to plug in a micro power adapter.
Due to its large size, the S250 has relatively few connection options, but the ones that are provided cover just about every base you’d want to access.
Software-wise, MSI pre-installs the laptop with Windows XP Home, some Cyberlink software (for watching and creating DVDs), and Norton AV and Internet Security. I’m not sure if this represents the retail package, but I’d imagine it’s close. 1.5GHz
The Pentium-M is paired with 512MiB of memory, of which the integrated SiS M661MX graphics chip steals 32MiB for its own use. Driving a 2D framebuffer at 1280×800 is a bit overkill, and while it has basic 3D capabilities, it wouldn’t hurt for the graphics chip to utilize half the memory. Toshiba’s 60GB (about 53GiB) MK6021GAS 2.5-inch hard drive takes care of storage. BTW, I have this drive and a few others ready for a drive roundup, so keep an eye out for them after Computex is over. Slimtype
The SOSW-852S is the S250’s optical drive, which allows you to burn CDs and DVDs using the included Cyberlink software. It would be rude not to find SiS 802.11g WiFi networking hardware in the S250, and connectivity is very important in the laptop world these days. It currently finds the Netgear access point at the Chinese Embassy and has no problem connecting to the Belkin hardware at my home, at 54g speeds. Notably, it supports WPA encryption, a networking standard that far replaces WEP, to keep your communications and your home network secure.
All this hardware combines to give me about 2 hours of battery life on the first few charges after receiving the machine, with WiFi enabled,
MSI Megabook S250 Battery
Life was about 2 hours, although the first run through the battery after the first charge showed closer to an hour of battery life. A few quirks on first use aside, it seemed to be able to get me through a few episodes of Stargate: Atlantis or a full DVD movie on a single charge on a flight to Taipei. Pretty good.
It comes with a custom carrying case that easily fits the S250, its small power adapter, and much larger power cord, with room to spare for a few DVDs I need to bring, a few discs of movies and TV shows I keep saved, and some of the usual peripherals like pens and a small paper notebook. Even with all that stuff loaded up, I barely felt the weight on my shoulders, which bodes well for the all-important Computex event in two weeks.
While I prefer the black S260 to the iBook-like white S250, the hardware performance is more than adequate for my use in Taiwan, leaving me with no desire for the sexier, more powerful S270.
To sum up this mini wonder from MSI, it’s absolutely the right size for my purposes, far better than the awful DTR models I reviewed for HEXUS. Ample disk space and stable WiFi, along with excellent basic ergonomics, let me put aside the reflective nature of the screen while enjoying the size and lightness of a laptop that’s almost perfect for my needs. I’m a journalist, and I don’t need 3D performance on the go. I just write, so all I need is a small, high-resolution, wireless keyboard that I can type away at for hours on end.
Thankfully, the S250 fits the bill perfectly. I can tell they’ll have a hard time getting it from MSI when I get back. At around £700 including VAT and shipping from a few UK locations, the S260 or S270 would be my first choice if I had a reason to not take advantage of the perks of being a tech journalist and buy my own hardware. The Sony S3XP is my top choice right now, with its slightly larger 13.3-inch screen and the same resolution, but the MSI is a close second.

MSI Titan 18 HX review: the most powerful 18-inch gaming laptop

Overview: The MSI Titan 18 is the most classic high-performance work and gaming laptop available today. But that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for most potential buyers, considering the price MSI is offering, the peculiarities of the case, keyboard, monitor, and the performance and cooling of this series compared to other options. In the review, we’ll go into all these details in detail. This is my review of the 2024 MSI Titan 18 HX performance laptop.

However, it’s still somewhat gaming-oriented. The illuminated dragon logo on the lid and RGB touchpad allow you to control the RGB within the scope, or turn it off completely for business/school environments. But there’s still some blue around the exhaust pipes on the back of the laptop, pointing to the gaming DNA of this series. In comparison, something like the Blade 18, ROG Scar 18, or Alienware m18 with all the RGB lights turned off looks cleaner and is better suited to these strict use cases.

However, you’ll likely need to use both hands to move it around, as it weighs 8 lbs / 3.6 kg in our test configuration. That’s about a pound heavier than the Scar, Blade, and even the Predator Helios 18. And don’t forget, it also comes with a 400W power module, which adds 2.5kg / 1.15kg of weight to your backpack. In reality, a 400W charger isn’t that heavy, but it’s still bigger and heavier than the 330W modern chargers offered by most competitors. Overall, the weight difference between the Titan+ Charger and other 18-inch laptops is about 1 to 1.5 pounds, with the only heavier option being the Alienware m18, which weighs in at about 10 pounds for the Laptop+ Charger.

Overall, this MSI Titan 18 HX is an excellent case in terms of materials, build quality and ergonomics, however, some design choices are controversial, such as the limited RGB on the one hand and the questionable combination of black and grey areas with blue accents on the other, which may make this laptop unacceptable in very strict office or school environments.

Keyboard and touchpad – Cherry switches and RGB lighting

In everyday use, the 3840 x 2400 pixel resolution is superbly sharp. Whether you’re viewing SDR or HDR content, everything looks beautiful with colors that pop and are incredibly vibrant. Plus, it’s super bright with a matte anti-glare finish, making it suitable for a variety of use cases, including bright office spaces. Hardware and Performance

Our test model was the top-spec configuration of the 2024-generation MSI Titan 18 HX codenamed Titan 18 HX A14VIG – based on an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor, 64GB of DDR5-4000 memory and 2TB of fast SSD storage. Dual graphics cards: An Nvidia RTX 4090 16GB dGPU and UHD iGPU are integrated into the Intel processor.

Before we continue, please note that the review unit was sent by MSI running software (BIOS E1822IMS.10E, GeForce 551.76 drivers) that will be available in early April 2024. It’s been a few months since this laptop hit store shelves, so we don’t expect any subsequent software changes at this time, but a new BIOS update was released in mid-April, and others will likely be released throughout the year. We also tested the Balanced PD Power mode, which also limits the CPU to only 55W.

Finally, in the Extreme profile, CPU power consumption on battery power fluctuated between 25-55W, with some fluctuating results during this test. Details below: CPU-wise, this laptop benefits from higher PL1/PL2 power settings than any other mobile computer. However, as mentioned before, this results in a score improvement of almost 1-3% compared to the i9-13980HX in the Scar 18 or last year’s Titan GT77. This is meaningless in real-world applications.

On the GPU side, this Titan 18 outperforms other RTX 4090 laptop configurations by a few percentage points, but that’s because the default OC setting in Extreme mode is +200 MHz core/memory, which is more aggressive than the GPU’s default OC setting; other laptops are usually limited to around +100 MHz.

This is the extreme performance mode, but given the weight and cooling of this laptop, the cooling and performance of the other profiles should be particularly interesting, which we’ll discuss later. Battery life

This Titan comes with a built-in 99.9Wh MSI Titan 18 laptop battery , which is the largest MSI Titan 18 battery capacity for a laptop .

This is the MSI laptop battery life we got on our review unit with the Nvidia GPU in Optimus mode, a screen brightness of about 120 nits (brightness about 50), and a default refresh rate of 120Hz . This implementation consumes more power than the other i9-14900HX models we tested, but this is not surprising considering that the 4K display is also important. Therefore, you can expect 3-4 hours of use per day on a single charge, which is a good thing since you won’t get the battery efficiency of the MSI Titan 18 battery on the Intel HX platform.

I should also add that this Titan 18 laptop comes with a 400W power brick. It’s a fairly chunky unit, weighing over 2.5 pounds, with a fairly short cable that connects to the power brick. You can’t leave the brick on the floor; you can only connect the cable to a table, and you have to take the charger from the table. In comparison, the latest 330W chargers offered by rival laptops tend to be smaller and have longer, more ergonomic cables. This laptop supports USB-C charging with up to 100W of power through one of the left-side USB-C slots. I didn’t test the general behavior of the USB-C power supply or whether USB-C passthrough is implemented, but I expect it won’t be.

Asus ROG Strix G17 review: Great low-budget power

Let’s get one thing clear up front: I’m not a fan of Asus’ ROG laptops. The company’s popular line of gaming hardware has a reputation for quality reliability, and many other writers at Laptop Mag have raved about laptops like the Asus Rog Strix Scar 18.

But the elements of a gaming laptop I was looking for weren’t met when I tested the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17, which was let down by its so-so display, cheap looks, and $3,599 price tag. So when I pulled the Asus ROG Strix G17 out of the box, I was apprehensive. It looked similar, and I figured it would suffer from the same issues—wait, this laptop is only $1,399?

Sure, my basic gripe with its thin exterior remains, but it’s not as off-putting given the low price. The Strix G17’s excellent productivity performance and great frame rates, as well as its RTX 4060 graphics card, speak for themselves when gaming. While I would criticize anything over $2,000 with a display of this quality, it’s pretty vivid and bright for midrange hardware. With so much power for such a cheap product, it’s easily one of the best gaming laptops under $1,500, so

ASUS ROG Strix G17 Price and Configurations

The Strix G17 model we reviewed is $1,399 at Walmart. It features an AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 laptop graphics, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage. It also has a 17.3-inch, 2,560 x 1,440 display with a 240Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time.

LAPTOPMAG’s latest video

It can also be upgraded to an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor, an RTX 4070 laptop GPU, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of SSD storage, and is priced at $2,199 on the Asus website.

Asus ROG Strix G17 design

Asus has built a hulking behemoth, and I’m struck by its size every time I turn around and see the 17.3-inch Strix G17 sitting on the desk next to me. It has the iconic ROG logo printed on its lid, which glows white when the laptop is on, along with distinctive white spots on the black painted portion of the back bar. Lifting the lid reveals a large panel with a full keyboard, with the WASD keys featuring clear keycaps and white plastic underneath that absorbs the accompanying RGB colors well. The panel also has a row of angled triangles that give it an aesthetic.

Asus ROG Strix G17

Unfortunately, it suffers from the same design issues I noticed when reviewing the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17. While the milled aluminum chassis sounds nice, I could feel the panel sink when applying pressure to certain points of its thin chassis. I’m less forgiving of the Strix Scar 17 considering it costs over $3,000, but at least for this laptop, its build quality is understandable for its $1,399 price tag. The hinge also causes the lid to collapse in on itself near the bottom, and it feels pretty wobbly when adjusted.

Asus ROG Strix G17 Ports

I rarely review laptops that have absolutely no ports on the right side, but the Strix G17 does. Other than that, it offers enough functionality for most people to play games without extra accessories.

Asus ROG Strix G17 Display

With a 17.3-inch, 2,560 x 1,440 resolution display with a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time, this screen won’t disappoint gamers who need a gorgeous display to play their favorite games.

I watched the trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and while it wasn’t noticeably vivid or bright, the claymation-like aesthetic of the turtles running around a stylized New York City had solid color outlines. The sketchbook quality of its world came to life with the display’s balanced contrast, and I was mesmerized by the various lights of the city against the night sky.

On the Laptop Mag battery test, which involves continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits, the Strix G17 lasted as short as 2 hours and 35 minutes.Asus ROG Strix G17Not only is this subpar to the category average of 5 hours and 44 minutes, but the Legion 5 Pro (4:38) and EON16-S (5:06) have nearly double the longevity. Even the Katana 15 (2:48) just barely surpasses it.

Acer Swift 5: Still the world’s lightest laptop, with 50% longer battery life

The Acer Swift 5 was announced at IFA 2018 as the world’s first 14-inch laptop to weigh less than 1 kg (2.2 pounds). This year’s upgraded model is even lighter while featuring a more powerful processor, discrete graphics, and more than 50% longer Acer Swift 5 laptop battery life. Acer has partnered with Microsoft and Intel to bring you a device that’s better suited to your needs. Designed for users who are often on the go and don’t want to be bogged down by daily driving, the Acer Swift 5 is an ultra-portable and powerful device packed with cutting-edge technology. Weighing 990 grams (35 ounces), the Swift 5 is the world’s lightest laptop to date. You can save a few grams if you remove the optional Nvidia GeForce MX250 discrete graphics from your setup. The 2019 high-end model also has Intel’s latest 10th-generation i7 processors. Those who opt for the lower-end model get Intel’s Iris Plus graphics.
For storage, you get up to 512GB of PCIe Gen 3×4 SSD. A single USB3.1 Type-C connector supports Thunderbolt 3. You’ll also find two USB3 connectors, an audio jack, and an HDMI port. The Swift 5 supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). Like the previous model, the Swift 5’s 14-inch display offers Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) along with an IPS touchscreen. The ultra-narrow bezels on the top and sides of the screen are just 3.97 mm (0.156 inches), giving you more screen real estate within the 14-inch form factor.
The chassis is made from a combination of magnesium-lithium and magnesium-aluminum alloys. It’s sleek and thin at just 14.95 mm (0.59 inches). There’s a fingerprint reader embedded in the chassis that lets you log into the device securely via Windows Hello.
Acer laptop batteries
last 50% longer than last year’s model. The upgraded Acer Swift 5 laptop battery
lasts up to 12.5 hours. It also comes with a fast-charging feature that provides up to 4.5 hours of battery life after a half-hour charge. We don’t know if this is the best new feature, but the increased battery life is certainly one of the most impressive improvements.
Overall, Acer has made incredible progress with the Swift 5 in just one year. We’re eager to see how
the Acer Swift 5 laptop batterylasts over the long term.

A week with the Surface Laptop 7: There’s a lot to like, but the Copilot Plus PC isn’t perfect

While I used a Microsoft Surface Laptop for this review, there are actually a lot of options if you want to get the Copilot Plus PC experience. Dell, HP, Samsung, and others all offer hardware in the $1,300 range with the same or similar Snapdragon X CPUs and dedicated Copilot keys. So, in terms of the core experience, these PCs are all very similar; the design, keyboard, and display features are quite different.
Still, the Microsoft Surface Laptop’s design sets a new bar, and it’s well built, as you’d expect from a seventh-generation, $999-plus laptop. The recycled aluminum is available in a stylish Sapphire (blue) or Dune (bronze/tan) colorway, as well as in practical black and silver. I went with the latter, and wasn’t disappointed. With a pixel-dense 2,496 x 1,664 HDR touchscreen, responsive tactile keys, and future-proof Wi-Fi 7 support on this 15-inch model, Microsoft certainly showed us how good Copilot Plus PC hardware can be. My only complaint: The 15-inch model is a bit heavier at 1.7kg (3.67lbs), compared to the less-than-1kg Huawei MateBook X Pro (2024) ultrabook and 1.24kg for the MacBook Air. Still, Microsoft has packed a Surface Laptop 7 battery that will easily last you through a full workday. As everyone has said, battery life on these devices is truly exceptional. I haven’t experienced Microsoft’s 20-hour video playback or 15-hour web browsing metrics (at a fairly dim 150 nits), but the latter isn’t far off the 10 hours or more I’ve seen when using a laptop during the day. There’s a big asterisk in these battery claims, though, which we’ll get to later.
No matter which Copilot Plus PC you choose, you’ll get Snapdragon X performance, AI extras, and long  Surface Laptop 7 battery life.
For a cutting-edge device, I found the choice of USB ports a bit odd. Two multifunction USB-C ports are flanked by USB-A sockets and a 3.5mm headphone jack, while a microSD card hides in another port, which I find useful. But it’s 2024 now, and I could live without the old port types if it could make the laptop a little lighter (my desktop audio, display, and keyboard are on dongles anyway), but I appreciate that others might still find some use for these traditional use cases. Unfortunately, the USB-A port failed a few times for me, completely refusing to accept or power any connection until a reboot.Microsoft Surface Home 7th GenThis question is surprisingly difficult. On the one hand, the Copilot Plus PCs offer a refined Windows experience that many consumers undoubtedly want. They both have absolutely amazing battery life, a wealth of ports and features, and promise to deliver the best new AI tools for the platform, with room to grow as the space evolves. In this regard, I really like the Microsoft Surface Laptop, and the fledgling Copilot Plus PC ecosystem has a lot of potential.

Dell G5 15 Gaming (5500) Laptop Review

The Dell G5 15 Gaming (5550) is the latest gaming laptop from the Texas computing giant, and this heavyweight combines enticing technology with a relatively affordable price.
In other words, it’s a good choice for those who can’t afford Dell’s Alienware laptops.
Design and buildThe Dell G5 comes in a hue called “Interstellar Black,” which is essentially black plastic with a shiny finish. It’s not always that dramatic, in fact, from certain angles the lid looks like it’s been sandblasted, but it makes this Dell stand out. There are sizable vents on the rear, and the base includes RGB LEDs that make the table glow.
It’s attractive, but the design isn’t necessarily impressive. The shiny lid will be controversial, while the RGB LED lighting, plastic lid, and large vents look a little dated.
The G5 is 25mm thick and weighs 2.34kg, so it’s not exactly thin and light. The pricier MSI GS66 Stealth and cheaper Acer Predator Helios 300 are both 15.6-inch machines that are thinner and lighter.
If you really want to go slim, the 14-inch Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 weighs just 1.6kg and has a body thickness of 18mm.Keyboard and trackpadThe keyboard is well laid out, with a number pad, double-height return key and separate cursor buttons, and it features RGB LEDs that can be customized with effects and different colors across four zones. Ultimately, the G5 15 Gaming typing and pointing rig is only good enough for everyday use and casual gaming – it’s not good enough for anyone who takes gaming seriously. Rivals have more to offer in this regard, especially the keyboard, assuming you’ll be plugging in a gaming mouse for gaming.
Screen and speakersThis laptop has a Full HD VA display with a 144Hz refresh rate, but no syncing. Still, that’s enough to provide a crisp and smooth experience in single-player and esports titles.
Brightness levels of 325 nits are more than adequate for all indoor scenarios, and its black point of 0.27cd/m2 is reasonable. Contrast of 1,204:1 is good, too, providing plenty of punch and depth.
Dell strikes back with impressiveDell G5 15 laptop  battery life for the Dell G5 15 laptop. It lasted more than eight hours in our video playback benchmark, and managed six hours of work – this machine can last a full day in the office if you’re careful. Its gaming life of one hour and 43 minutes is more conventional, but overall it’s on par with the MSI, not far behind the smaller Asus, and a lot better than the Acer.
