How to Set Smartphone Limits for Your Kids

The
bond I felt with my first phone (a Nokia 6610), bordered on covalent, and that
was sans access to today’s veritable buffet of games and social networks—not to
mention the internet at large.
Regardless
of what you think it says about generational priorities, the accumulated data
is clear: mobile access to the internet has becomeessential to the experience of being a teen, and the age when kids
get connected is falling.

Put
Your Teen (or Pre-Teen’s) Screen Time in Context

2016 survey from Influence Central
found the average age for a first smartphone at a shade north of 10. Those
phones aren’t merely being used for safety check-ins with parents, either. The
same report found half of children surveyed had at least one social media
account by the age of 12.
The
proliferation of smart devices presents unique challenges for parents, and all
that increased screen time can cause conflicts in the home. A Reuter’s article cites a third of families
arguing daily about time spent on devices. But while watching a toddler
expertly and intuitively manipulate a device before mastering language can be a
little unnerving, it’s wise to not restrict reflexively. Instead, individualize
your approach based on your child’s age, personality and individual needs.
For instance, if your kidasks to watch something educational, or falls in love with a game that
encourages activity, your amount of allowed screen time may fluctuate.
Flexibilityis vital for another reason too, because as kids grow, smartphones take on a
heightened symbolic importance, to the point where cutting them off from their
phone entirely could have larger consequences than you realize, including
impeding their social development and identity.

Each
Kid Interacts With Devices Differently

“Forteens, phones or tablets are often ‘safety devices’ in more ways than one,”explains Amanda Lenhart, senior research scientist for the Associated Press,
who has been researching the intersection of tech and teens for 15 years. “As a
parent, if you decide to ground them from their phones, you’re disconnecting
them from the information of the day.”
Because of that socialfunction, Lenhart hesitates to use the term ‘addiction’ when it comes to teens’
preoccupation with devices, instead pointing toward new research that
identifies the phenomenon as a “differential susceptibility.” Similar to how
adults interact with a substance like alcohol, some teens moderate themselves,
while others struggle to control themselves.
Thepoint of many of these platforms, the gamification of features, is to keep you
coming back, that’s how they make money,” warns Lenhart, “so it’s up to parents
to understand how their kid responds to something like that, and adjust their
approach to shepherd their child to responsible digital adulthood.”
That
journey requires different techniques along the way, so we spoke with parents
across three age groups to identify the best methods to keep digital usage
under control.

Ages 0-6: Monitor and Set Limits

Six
and under is probably too young for their own cell phone, but the draw of using
devices is present early on, thanks to loads of streaming videos and apps gearedtoward kids.
Melissa
Frame, mother of two girls (ages 2 and 4), has already noticed a desire for
more digital independence in her 4-year-old. “Now that she’s a little older,
she’s interested in watching videos where adults unbox and play with toys,” she
explains, “sometimes the people in the videos make their dolls do gross things,
like poop or throw up. Seriously, wtf? So I supervise her video time closer
than with my 2-year-old.”
Frame also keeps usageunder control by setting time limits (she tries to keep it around 20 minutesper day) and incentivizing watching videos as a reward for good behavior.“Those videos mostly lack educational value, so I use them more as a treat.”
She also seeks out cute videos she approves and recommends them for impromptu
viewing if she needs to finish a task. “I’ll say, who wants to watch the baby
shark video? That can often be enough to keep them from weirdo videos.”
Matt
Mundy, father of a 6-year-old son and two daughters (3 and 4), also notes how
important your own example is when you’re teaching young kids responsible
device usage, “I try to be cognizant of how much I can get focused on my phone.
It’s unfair and hypocritical for me to expect them not to use the phone if I’m
on the phone.”
This means beingparticularly aware of fighting your own desire to use your phone during familytime, or moments you want your kids to remain device-free as they grow older.“When we’re hanging out as a family, if we’re eating breakfast, I don’t really
have my phone out,” says Mundy, “and before bedtime, when they’re settling
down, we’re careful not to overstimulate them.”

Ages
6-12: Understand the Importance, Remain Engaged

Asthe aforementioned studies found, this is typically the age range when parents
purchase a phone for their child, which means this is also when you may see
your role shift from everyday regulator to periodic advisor.
Since
his son is nearing the age, Mundy is mentally preparing for that eventual
craving for a personal screen. “It is a decision I’m concerned about in the
next few years. It’s a Pandora’s Box, but it’s also completely impractical for
him not to have a phone.”
Lateelementary school and early middle school are where the lines of socialcommunities start to be drawn, and if you’re adding a cell phone to your kid’s
role in that dynamic, bear in mind their interaction with devices will be
regulated beyond the home.
In the domestic sense, once
you’ve granted them their own phone, it’s an ideal time to lay down concrete
ground rules and expectations. The more specific, the better, but be as
consistent in your enforcement as possible: no phones during family meals at
home, no social apps or games until homework has been completed, check-in texts
when departing or arriving anywhere, etc.
Whileyou’re determining your rules, make sure you understand what cell phoneregulations their school is enacting as well, as those will likely also adjustwith age. Suzanne Poppke is an educator who has worked on both sides of the
elementary-to-middle school transition, where she’s witnessed the heightening
importance of smartphones as a social tool.
According
to Poppke, middle school is the age when kids’ reverence for online content
becomes all-consuming, and she explains, “they discuss the digital world
constantly. A lot of their social [in person] interactions revolve around
online content. They idolize people they find through social media.”
Therefore a middle schoolwill typically have harsher phone regulations, which may affect your teen’susage outside of class. At Poppke’s middle school, students registered
smartphones at the beginning of the year and had to store them all day in a
cubby. Such Draconian measures might lead to an increased desire to use the
phone at home. Adjust your rules accordingly, while remembering the social
value of the phone to your teen.
The
current generation of teens is bound through cultural touchstones that are
occurring online, which makes a connection to that realm vital to their social
development and cultivation of identity. Consequently, teachers like Poppke use
digital culture to forge friendships for new students, and keep her classroom
engaged.
It’sa valuable technique for parents, too, as once that threshold ofphone-as-social-tool has been crossed, regulation becomes increasinglymore-difficult. Abide by your ground rules as best you can, but also invest
more in educating yourself to the types of content your teen is consuming and
how it functions in building their social selves.
You
don’t have to scour the depths of their favorite YouTube channels, or obsess
over their browser histories, but inquiring who their online heroes are, or
asking them to watch a few of their favorite videos with you not only helps you
have a pulse on what they’re watching, it validates the person they’re becoming
online.
If you’re worried about
them accessing content you consider truly inappropriate, you can take proactive
measures to filter what your teen can access online. Services like Net Nanny and Qustodio attempt to offer
customizable catch-all solutions that modify browsers, set time limits, track
calls and monitor social media to shield young users from explicit material,
profane language and pornography.
These
services work across family PCs, laptops and devices, but they can be pricey.
Alternatively, Google’s Family Link is free, but has come
under scrutiny for letting teens 13+ lift restrictions themselves.
Tech-savvy
teens are generally more likely to seek out ways to circumvent filters as they
mature, and some filter features may prove too invasive for some (Qustodio lets
you read your children’s text messages on an Android device), so be mindful
that a service is never a substitute for your own awareness and involvement.
Observing and embracing
your kid’s online identity is essential in guiding them to Lenhart’s vision of
“responsible digital adulthood,” regardless of whether you impose restrictions
by content, hour, or data. Emphasize that a phone is no longer merely a
distraction or reward for good behavior, but a tool that will help shape the
person they’re becoming.

Ages
12-18: Gradually Yield Trust, Schedule Off-Device Activity

Theend of middle school and the beginning of high school is where the mostdifficult challenges present themselves, as kids are deepening and expanding
their social identities, offline and online. By 12, a majority of classmates
have scored their own cell phones, so peer pressure picks up for phoneless
kids.
“At
the beginning of 6th grade, my daughter started asking for one. Everyone in her
class had one,” recalls Manny Bocchieri, whose daughter is now 14 and in high
school. “We started with a burner phone for emergency calls, but every year the
pressure mounted for us to get her a smartphone. She couldn’t take pictures
with the burner. At 12, we caved and gave her an old iPhone.”
Middle
school is a major time for community-building and learning how to identify as
part of social circles. Teenagers become increasingly eager to parake in that
outside of the confines of the home.
“It’s freaking tricky,”Bocchieri opines, “it’s an extension of understanding the boundaries of her
individuality. She goes out with her friends, has some money to spend. She
wants to document life and prove herself as part of a tribe. For us, it’s like trusting
her to tread water at 8 feet, knowing next year it’ll be 9.”
While
relinquishing control, it’s still important to stand firm on some rules.
Bocchieri mandates being able to follow all his daughter’s social media
profiles and asks her to stop using the phone when the battery dips below 20%,
for emergencies.
Itdoesn’t always work. Teenagers like exploring the boundaries of rules, and apps
like Snapchat offer communication beyond what a parent can see, not to mention,
teens are more attuned to new apps than you are, putting them a step ahead of
filter services.
All these factors present a
larger problem for parents: as smartphones take on greater social importance,
they can become an increasing time suck for teens. As Lenhart explains, “The
desire to stay in touch with your friends is a reasonable one, though parents
need to know how much self-control their teen is capable of.”
Outright
taking away phones for 12-18 year olds is difficult for two related reasons,
according to Lenhart:
Getting
your teen to engage offscreen is typically a more successful endeavor when the
solution is proactive, not reactive. “If my daughter mentions a hobby that
intrigues her, I double down on it right away to keep her active,” offers
Bocchieri, “she wants to play drums? I’ll sign her up for classes ASAP and get
some drumsticks in her hand.”
This
is where tracking data or time usage via the device or a service can prove
especially helpful. Restrictions may be harder to impose on older teens, but you
can encourage them to augment their schedules with more active extracurricular
options if time on certain apps starts to balloon.
If
problems persist, other non-invasive solutions can be found in the hardware
itself, or the carrier that supplies the data connection. Many Android modelsare more affordable and
offer greater customization than their iPhone counterparts, while both Verizon and AT&T peddle prepaid plans
designed specifically for teens, allowing parents to limit the amount of
non-WiFi data available and put restrictions on time, texts and purchases. Be
aware though: plans like these don’t limit the amount of data a device can
consume connected to a WiFi network, so you may still want to use a monitoring
or filtering service for devices at home.

Check
Yourself

No
matter the age, parents should emphasize the importance of off-screen time,
especially during moments you want familial engagement most, like mealtimes. If
you set a rule like no phones at the dinner table, make sure it’s one you abide
by, too and one that you enforce for all your kids, regardless of their age.
Keep the times you want to be device-free sacred for everyone.

10 quick ways to clear space on an overstuffed Android device

Zapcached app files in a single tap, clear the Downloads folder, delete unneededoffline maps, take charge of music downloads, and more.

Few things in life are as annoying as finding that your Androidhandset refuses to install any more app updates because it’s run out ofstorage. Unlike many of life’s little annoyances, though, this one’s easy to
fix. You can quickly clear out hundreds of megabytes or even a gig or two
by sweeping up stale downloads, rooting out offline maps and documents,
clearing caches, and wiping unneeded music and video files. And if these
tips don’t do the trick, check out our picks for the
best Androidphones for every need and budget.

1.
Clear out all cached app data

Ifyou dig into the Apps storage setting screen and tap on an individual app,
you’ll notice that each app has its own stash of “cached” data—anywhere from a
few kilobytes to hundreds of megs, or even more.

These caches of data are essentially just junk
files, and they can be safely deleted to free up storage space. Tap the
Clear Cache button to
take out the trash.
If poking through each and every app looking for cached data to
clear sounds like a chore, there’s an easy way to clear all cached app data in
one fell swoop. Tap Settings > Storage > Cached data,
then tap OK in
the confirmation window.

2.
Clean up the Downloads folder

Justlike on a PC or a Mac, your Android device has a Downloads folder (or Files onPixel and some Oreo phones). It’s a favorite hideout for miscellaneous junk
files downloaded from the Web or by your various apps.

Tap and hold a file in the Downloads folder and
then tap the Trash button to delete it.
Open the app drawer and tap Downloads or Files to
see what’s lurking inside. Tap the three-line menu icon in the top corner of
the
screen and sort the list
of downloads by size, then take a look at what’s hogging the most storage
space. If you see anything you don’t need, tap and hold the file to select it,
then tap the Trash button.

3.
Dump photos that are already backed up

Oneof the best features of Google’s Photos app is its ability to back up your entirephoto library to your online Google account. Once your snapshots are safely
backed up, Photos can zap any locally stored images to free up more space.

Google Photos will quickly delete any pictures
on your device that have already been backed up to your Google account.
Open the Photos app, tap the three-line menu button in the top
left corner of the screen, then tap Free up device storage.
The Photos app will let you know how many pictures it can delete from local
storage; tap OK to pull the trigger.
Note: If you’re using
the “High quality” setting for unlimited but lower-resolution cloud storage of
your backed up photos, keep in mind that the “Free up device storage” feature
will delete your full-resolution originals. Make sure you’ve stored them elsewhere
before you tap the OK button.

4.
Manage downloaded music and podcasts

Downloaded
tunes and podcasts in the Play Music app can gobble up an impressive amount of
storage.
Same
goes with podcasts, with Play Music’s default setting geared to auto-download
the three most recent episodes of each subscription. If you subscribe to more
than a few podcasts, those episodes—and the space required to store them on
your handset—can add up quickly.

Tocheck exactly how many megabytes or even gigabytes of storage Play Music hasreserved for tunes and podcasts, tap the three-line menu button in the top left
corner of the screen, then tap Settings > Manage downloads.
To wipe a song download or a podcast from local storage, tap the orange Downloaded button
to the right of its name. You can do the same thing with Spotify, YouTube
Music, or Apple Music, depending on your streaming app of choice. The process
is slightly different, but each app allows you to find and delete anything
you’ve downloaded.

5. Erase offline areas in Google Maps

Just
tap one of your offline maps in the Google Maps app to update it or—if you’re
running low on storage space—delete it.
But
those searchable offline “areas” come at a cost: storage space, and potentially
lots of it. Indeed, a single offline map can consume more than a gigabyte of
storage depending on the size of the area.
You
can check how much space your offline maps have staked out by tapping the
three-line menu button in the top left corner of the main Google Maps
interface, then tapping Offline. The storage used
by each offline map is displayed below its name. Tap the map and tap Delete to
reclaim its storage space.

6.
Unload your least-used apps

Ilove the fact that I can download and install Android apps to my devicesremotely from a desktop web browser. The downside? My Android handsets tend to
be overstuffed with too many apps, many of them used only once (or even never).
You
can find out which apps you use the least with help from the Play Store app.
The
solution, of course, is to delete some of those apps—ideally, the ones you use
the least. There are also several apps that can track your app usage and
tell you which apps you’re using the least, among them: App UsageApp Tracker,
and QualityTime.
But the best judge of the apps you don’t want is you. You can either browse
your app drawer to find any apps you don’t need anymore, or check out your
library in the Play Store.
Tofind a list of everything on your phone, open the Play Store app, tap the
three-line menu button in the top right corner of the screen, tap My
apps & games
, then tap the Installed tab. Next,
tap the Sort button
near the top-right corner of the screen, then pick an option, such as Size or—better
yet—Last
Used
. If you sort your apps according to Last Used, scroll to the
very bottom of the list to see which apps you use the least. See a seldom-used
app you could do without? Tap it, then tap Uninstall.

7.
Use Oreo’s storage tools

If you’re lucky enough to have a phone that’s been updated to Oreo,Google has built in some great tools for tracking and managing your storagelimits. Head over to the Setting app and tap the Storage tab. Inside
you’ll find a handy rundown of everything that’s taking up space on your phone,
just like on Nougat. But in Oreo, you have more control over your files. Tap on
any of the sections and you’ll see a list of related apps and how much space
they’re using. Tap again, and you’ll be able to clear anything inside by
selecting the “Free Storage button. Just keep in mind
that this will clear any files being help inside the app.

The
storage manager in Android Oreo will help you see exactly what’s eating your
phone’s free space.

You’ll
also find a new “Free up space” button at the top of Oreo’s storage manager.
Tap it and you’ll see a list of your downloads and infrequently used apps, as
well as an option to clear any photos and videos that have already been backed
up to the cloud. It’s essentially a shortcut, but it’s a handy one.

8.
Turn on smart storage

Oreoincludes a new toggle called Smart Storage that can work wonders withoutneeding to do a thing. Flip it on, and your phone will automatically clear out
the biggest space-stealing culprit: photos and videos.

Android
Oreo’s Smart Storage can free up space without your needing to lift a finger.

Since
we all forget to clear out our photo libraries regularly, you can choose to
automatically remove backed-up photos and videos after 30, 60, or 90 days,
making sure you phone isn’t stuffed with duplicate photos.

9.
Get an SD card

Nearlyevery Android phone you can buy in 2018 has a slot for expandable storage, soyou’ll be able to double, triple, and quadruple the space on your phone forjust a few bucks. You’ll want to get a micro SD card from Samsung or SanDisk in
at least 32GB capacity. Prices per gigabyte decrease substantially as the
capacity increases, so you should buy the biggest card that you can afford. As
a very general rule, around $0.40 per gigabyte is a good price.

The
best way to free up space on your Android phone is to add more of it.

Once
you select the size you want, installing it is a snap. There’s no formatting to
worry about, just pop open your SIM card slot and slide in the SD card. Then,
you’ll be able to shift files and apps onto the card as needed to free up
precious internal space.

10.
Take advantage of Google Drive

Googlegives 15 gigs of free cloud storage with every account, so you might as welluse it. Anything inside your Downloads or Files app can be jettisoned to your
Google Drive by tapping the menu button in the top right corner and choosing
“Send to…” This will open the share sheet, where you can select select Save
to Drive
to choose which folder to add it to. Then you can
delete it from your phone without losing it forever.

With the iPhone SE fading away the iPhone 6S is the best cheap iPhone around

Getting cheap iPhones is still possible thanks to the 6S

The iPhoneSE was a one of a kind when it came to the world of phones. A
sentence that feels weird considering nothing really stood out about the
device. But the factor that brought in the crowds and made iPhoneSE deals a choice for the masses was its position as the
cheapest iPhone.
But now, it seems like
the SE is dying out, very few retailers still stock the device and prices seem
sporadic at best. So where do you now turn to get an affordable price from the
notoriously expensive Apple? iPhone6S deals.
The iPhone6S came out a whole year before the SE and yet, in almost every
way it is better. It’s bigger, has a larger battery and stronger processor and
offers 3D touch, a feature that never quite made it to the SE. Best of all, the
prices have dropped significantly and now cost roughly the same as the iPhone
SE at its cheapest, making it the perfect cheap iPhone.
We’ve listed our top
picks for iPhone6S deals below but if none of them quite do it for you, check
out our guide to the best mobilephone deals. Whether you feel a calling to Android or a higher-spec
iPhone, you’ll find everything there.

Apple finds wearable ‘gimmicks’ really count as iPhone slips

If Apple wants
to prove to doubters that there is life beyond the iPhone, then the wrists and
ears of millions of customers could provide the answer.
Twelve years
from the launch of Steve Jobs’s signature product, Apple wearables – and the
services that tie in to them – have emerged as an important component of the
tech giant’s profile, accounting for more than a third of sales in the last
quarter.
Last week
Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook, reported that sales in its wearables
division – which includes products from the Apple Watch to wireless headphones
– grew at a rate of 30% in the last quarter. If broken
out on its own the division would be in the top 200 of listed US companies,
Cook said.
The news is
especially surprising given the lukewarm initial reaction to many of the
products. When Apple’s design guru Sir Jonathan Ive first described his idea for the Apple Watch, back
in 2015, many looked on with scepticism or dismissed it as a fashion accessory.
According to analyst estimates, Apple sold
more than 20m watches last year alone.
The same was
true for the AirPod, Apple’s wireless headphone set, which was initially
dismissed as a gimmick that would provoke exasperation from consumers who
misplaced them. By some estimates sales this year will reach 60m pairs, rising
to 100m by 2021. According to analysis by the finance firm TF International
Securities, “there is a greater likelihood of legacy iPhone users buying
AirPods than upgrading to new iPhone models”.
But walk into
any Apple store, and the Apple Watch is prominently displayed at
the front. At the launch of the latest generation of phones, many customers
reported they were there for the watch, not the phone. AirPods, at £149 or $159
a pair, are shifting by the millions and have become a ubiquitous accessory of
the young male urban professional.
Apple does not break down sales
figures for the watch and AirPod, but its most recent sales report showed that
its wearables, home and accessories unit recorded a record quarter in March of
$5.1bn.
In total, the combination of wearables and services – such as
Apple Music subscriptions – accounted for 29% of total revenue, while the
iPhone fell to 54% of sales from its typical level of two-thirds.
Apple may never hit the heights it achieved with the iPhone, but
analysts say the new figures underscore an important and long-term change in
strategy. “We’re seeing Apple put a stronger emphasis on the watch and AirPod,
as well as their new services like music and games, to start to fill in the
gaps where iPhone sales are slowing down because the demand for smartphones
worldwide has hit a peak,” says Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies, a San
Francisco tech analysis company.
While the global market of 2.5bn smartphones still has plenty of
room for sales from upgrades (as many as 350m iPhones this year and into next according to estimates), growth of Apple’s
wearables has caught many by surprise. “We know that once people get into the
Apple ecosystem they don’t leave,” says Bajarin, referring to the estimated 800
million to 1 billion people who already use Apple devices and are prime targets
for its wearable and services products.
“Apple’s concept, which seems to be paying off, was to add value
to their music service business with a hands-free Bluetooth headset,” he says.
It’s an age-old technique for Apple: introduce hardware that drives software or
information services. It worked with the iPod and the iPhone, and now for Apple
Watch and AirPod.
The HomePod has been one of the Tim Cook era’s
less successful launches. Photograph: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images
Both the AirPod and Apple Watch tap
into key markets. The watch targets millennials who want to monitor health and
exercise, while the AirPod supports Apple’s services business, particularly its
fast-growing Apple Music, which now reportedly has 28 million paid
subscribers in the US to Spotify’s 26 million. There is also the imminent Apple streaming service which
will compete with Netflix, Disney, and Amazon.
Not all of the Cook-era products have struck gold. While the
watch got off to a slow start, some products have started slow and never picked
up – witness the HomePod, considered a pale imitator of Amazon’s Echo.
For the watch, sales began to take off once Apple dropped the
idea of selling it as a luxury item, eliminating its $10,000 gold edition and
focusing on cheaper models.
It was a mistake to make it a high-end fashion product,” says
Bajarin. “Once it became an extension of the iPhone and began delivering
accuracy around steps and heart rate, people began seeing it as a way to
augment their health, particularly among the millennial generation.”
Increasingly, it is Apple’s wearables business that is keeping
the company in touch with the tech-savvy global consumer.

Apple iPhones expected to get redesigned antenna

The iPhone XR, XS and XS Max are getting new
antenna technology, according to an Apple analyst.
Apple is expected to make big changes
to the antenna structure in its 2019 iPhones,
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reportedly said in a note released Sunday.
Apple plans to use modified-PI (MPI) material in the handsets
rather than the liquid crystal polymer (LCP) material found in antennas used by
iPhone XS, iPhone XS Maxand iPhone XR,
according to the Kuo report, seen by MacRumors.
Kuo reportedly believes the LCP limits RF performance of the handsets due to
technology limitations and production issues.
Kuo reportedly believes Apple will still use LCP as the primary
material for 5Gantennas
in 2020 iPhones as the production issues affecting the RF performance of LCP
antennas will be resolved by then.
Apple is also expected to use the LCP material in iPads beginning
at the end of 2019, Kuo wrote.
Apple didn’t immediate respond to a request for comment.
