Every year, we hear some version of the “biggest iPhone update ever,” and while its accuracy varies, what’s before you today is indeed the biggest iPhone ever – the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Before we go on, let’s unbox it. You get a nice braided USB-C cable and a SIM tool – enjoy them, we feel like they’re probably getting old too. Apple has packed a truly massive 6.9-inch screen into this year’s Pro Max, but it doesn’t feel like a giant iPhone. That’s because Apple has also slimmed down the bezels, so the increase in size doesn’t feel as drastic. Still, aside from the thickness remaining the same at 8.3mm, this year’s big iPhone is slightly larger than its predecessor in every direction. Aside from the bigger screen and chip update, the biggest new feature on the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the new camera control button, which is a pretty innovative concept. It’s a real button – pressing it opens the camera app from any screen (double-tap from a locked phone), but it also recognizes pressure and opens deeper controls that you can swipe on.
We love this new button because it opens the camera app from anywhere, but it took us some time to get used to it. We immediately felt that it was better suited for portrait use and for right-handed people – it’s far from the most comfortable in landscape mode. Coming back to the question of the size of the iPhone 16 Pro Max – it’s side by side with the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
