Apple: Everything you need to know about the Apple Watch SE 2 (2022)

Apple has updated its Watch lineup for 2020 with the addition of the first SE model, bringing the wildly popular wearable into “affordable” range for more people. Apple will release the Apple Watch SE 2 in 2022, and if so, what can you expect? Let’s have a look!

When will the new Apple Watch SE 2 (2022) be released?

Apple hasn’t confirmed any details about a potential successor to the Apple Watch SE, so there’s no known release date yet.

While Apple updates its main line of iPhones like clockwork every year, the pattern for most other devices is more sporadic. Like the iPhone SE, iPad Air, and iPad mini, the Apple Watch SE appears to have a lifespan of more than a year, with no release in 2021.

The good news is that it will likely be released sometime in 2022. The newsletter says the Apple Watch SE could be released this fall alongside the Apple Watch Series 8, but doesn’t mention a specific release date.

If Apple sticks to the usual release cycle for the Apple Watch Series 8, there’s a good chance we’ll see the Apple Watch series launch sometime in September 2022.

What’s in the new Apple Watch SE 2 (2022)?

Apple has not announced new features, and there are currently no leaks or rumors. Traditionally, at least in the main Apple Watch lineup, there have been faster processors and new features added, but there’s a reason SE models are cheaper: They don’t have the latest features or the fastest processors.

That doesn’t mean we can’t make educated guesses about what the SE 2 will look like, as Apple has long reused components and features introduced in previous flagships that have extended to more affordable models. Here’s what we’d like to see in the Apple Watch SE 2 (2022).

ECG

Since the Apple Watch SE already features many of the Apple Watch Series 5’s specs, it would make sense that any update would bring a standout feature from the older device that wasn’t already available on the cheaper model—the electrocardiogram.

The ECG app allows you to record your heartbeat and then check it for atrial fibrillation, an irregular rhythm. This is a very useful tool for monitoring heart health, and if you have any concerns, you can show the record to your doctor. With the ECG app first appearing on the Watch Series 4, it seems like it’s about time the feature made its way to any new version of the Watch SE.

Always on

Another notable upgrade is the Always-On display introduced with the Apple Watch Series 5. This useful feature means you can check the time or other important information on the screen without lifting your wrist. Instead, the Watch always displays all relevant data, hence the name Always-on.

Blood oxygen monitoring

Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the Apple Watch SE will basically serve as a replacement for the Series 6, the last in the series before the Apple Watch Series 7 increases its display size. If so, the ability to monitor your blood oxygen levels will be standard. As Apple continues to position the Watch as a health and wellness device, adding this feature and the aforementioned ECG will make the SE 2 a real motivator for fitness enthusiasts and those who just want to spot any potential health issues before they develop into a more serious concern.
