DJI Air 3 review: Old idea, new packaging

DJI Air 3 comes with two lenses, 46 minutes of flight time, and a familiar lookThe drone world’s worst-kept secret is out. It’s called the Air 3, and yes, all the rumors are true. Priced at $1,099 and up, this new DJI Air 3 drone from DJI comes with two cameras, 46 minutes of DJI Air 3 battery life, improved Ocusync 4 connectivity, a brand new controller, and a brand new design similar to the recently released Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Pro. Let me ask you a question: Are you particularly excited about these changes? No? Me too.

Secondly, as someone who desperately wants to extract the best image quality out of any of my cameras, I aim to shoot at the lowest possible ISO while maintaining a decent shutter speed (twice the frame rate). This means that once I switch from the f/1.7 aperture main lens to the f/2.8 telephoto lens, I’ll probably have to bump up the ISO, which in turn will introduce more noise into my clips.
As for photos, this drone shoots decent 12MP photos. You’ll be happy with the results, and DJI’s RAW files leave plenty of information to work with during the editing process. DJI also lists a 48MP photo mode, but I couldn’t find it in the menus. Presumably, it will be coming in a later firmware update. I’ve reached out to DJI about this. Other than the two lenses, there’s really not much to discuss if you’re familiar with DJI’s existing lineup. There’s a new controller, and it’s just as good as the last one. DJI’s OcuSync connection system has been upgraded, but I haven’t had major connection issues in years.DJI Air 3 Drone Battery
Range is 20 km (12 miles), but in practice (and legally) you won’t be able to take advantage of that. Battery life is pretty much the same across the line right now, which is to say about 45 minutes, give or take. I didn’t notice any major issues here, like I did with the DJI Mini 3 Pro battery
issues I found during my Mini 3 Pro review.
DJI has also replaced its D-Log color profile with a less bland version, D-Log M. It’s easier to color grade, and doesn’t require shooting at high ISOs like D-Log does, but it also has noticeably less dynamic range. I really wish DJI would give us a choice between the two. DJI quietly replaced D-Log with D-Log M in the Air 2S drone, too, with a recent software update. On the company’s forums, a DJI representative said it was just a “naming convention issue,” but it still pissed off a lot of pilots.

Night mode, which was introduced for the Mavic 3 in late 2022, is also on the new Air 3. It allows you to increase the ISO to 12800 from the usual 6400 limit in normal shooting mode. In addition to the shooting settings, it seems that some in-camera noise reduction is applied to the footage.
The Air 3 is a capable but unremarkable drone
At its core, the Air 3 is just a recycling of old ideas we’ve already seen in other DJI products. There’s not much new here to get you excited to go out and fly. I’d love to see something new next year. Can we get built-in ND filters? Will the 360-degree camera appear here? Or do we start with a rear camera? How about the adjustable aperture that has been gradually introduced to the Mavic 3 series? I’m ready for new things.
