Microsoft’s newest operating system, Windows 11, began to roll out to compatible devices in stages, and Windows 10 received its own update earlier this month. If you install Windows 11, you will find that there are a lot of easy-to-learn tips, tricks and hidden features that can make your work on your laptop smoother. These built-in tricks can help you do everything from setting taskbar shortcuts to saving battery power and making the most of your machine. Let’s take everyone to learn about the nine skills that will make your computer serve you better.
1. Minimize the window
If your desktop screen is too crowded due to open windows, you can quickly minimize them all, except for the window you are currently using. The method is to go to “Settings”, “System”, “Multitasking” and “Multitasking” in turn, and the title bar window jitters. Just click the title bar of the window you want to keep open to select it.
2. “Secret” Start Menu
You know that to enter the Start menu, click the Windows icon on the left side of the screen or at the bottom of the keyboard. However, Windows 11 includes a little-known second start menu that makes it easier to access important functions such as the command prompt, control panel, and task manager. There are two different ways to access it, press the Windows key + X or right-click the Windows icon/start button.
3. Screenshot
If you want to capture and save a picture of the entire screen, the easiest way is to press the Windows key + Print Screen key, and the picture will be saved in the Picture> Screenshot folder. To capture only a part of the screen, press the Windows key + Shift + S to open a tool called Snip & Sketch, which allows you to click and drag to create a screenshot and save it to the clipboard.
4. Open the fixed project in the taskbar
If you have pinned programs to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen to create shortcuts, you can open them without clicking the icon. Instead, use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + [number key], the number key corresponds to the position of the fixed program on the taskbar. For example, the Windows key + 2 will open the second fixed item on the taskbar.
5. How much space the application takes up
To see how much space apps, temporary files, and documents take up, navigate to “Settings”> “System”> “Storage”. Tap Show more categories to see the complete list.
6. Close background apps to save battery
To control which apps run in the background and save some battery power and data, go to “Settings”> “System”> “Power and Battery”. Tap Power saving mode, and then adjust the power saving mode’s turn-on time to limit certain notifications and background activities.
7. Multi-window use background scrolling
With Windows 11, you can scroll up and down on any window-even if it is not the window in which you are working directly. This feature should be turned on by default, but if it is not, go to Settings> Bluetooth & devices> Mouse, and then switch to On when hovering the mouse over Scroll inactive windows. Then you can place the mouse on the window in the background and use the scroll wheel to scroll.
8. Show file extension in File Explorer
By default, Microsoft hides file extensions, which makes it difficult for people who need to find certain types of files. To view the file extension in File Explorer:
1. Use search in the taskbar, then type the file explorer option, then click on it.
2. In the pop-up window, click the View tab.
3. If it is checked, uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types box. Click Apply, and then click OK. You should now see the file extensions of all files in File Explorer.
9. Use Focus to help minimize distractions
When you are constantly interrupted by notifications, it can be frustrating to try to get the job done. Set up by going to Settings> System> Focus assistant. Choose from three options: off (get all notifications from your apps and contacts), priority only (view only selected notifications in your customized priority list, and send the rest to you Operation center) and alarms only (hide all notifications except alarms). You can also choose to automatically turn on this feature at a specific time.
