Acer Swift X 16 review: A good laptop, but the curved GPU is disappointing

Acer Swift X review: What you need to knowThe Acer Swift X 16 is one of a new generation of 16-inch Windows laptops that aims to be a do-it-all mobile workstation with some lightweight gaming capabilities; other models include the ultra-light LG Gram 16, Huawei MateBook 16s or the more obviously gamer-centric HP Omen 16, as well as my personal favorite, the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus. The left and right edges feature two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C and a pair of USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, as well as an HDMI 2.1 connector and a 3.5mm audio jack. This is a fairly generous choice when many competitors ditch ports for aesthetics. However, the lack of a memory card reader is disappointing, and since there is no dedicated charging port, you lose one of the USB-C ports to power the Acer Swift X 16 batterypower supply. Acer Swift X review: keyboard, touchpad and webcam
The keyboard is typical Acer style. The layout is sensible and the dimensions are generous, with a number pad on the right, but the key action is a little thin, but it’s accurate and responsive. It’s also rich in color, producing up to 110.3% of the sRGB color space, while the Delta E color accuracy relative to sRGB is a commendable 1.4 (lower is better, 0 is perfect).
Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 color spaces are only 76% and 78% respectively, which is poor performance, which will limit the Swift X’s appeal to professional photographers. Acer Swift X review: performance andAcer Swift X 16 battery LifeThis is the fourth time we’ve tested a machine built around Intel’s 12-core Core i7-1260P processor, but this is the first time we’ve encountered it in conjunction with a discrete GPU, so it’s worth a brief introduction to Intel’s new GPU.
Intel’s new Arc series GPUs come in three models, numbered 3, 5 and 7. The lower-end parts of the two 3-series GPUs come with 4GB of dedicated vRAM, and a maximum TGP of 30W for the A350M, or 50W for the A370M. The maximum frequencies of each are also different, with the A350M0 peaking at 1,150Mhz, while the A370M peaks at 1,550MHz. The Swift X 16 uses the more powerful A370M.Acer Swift X 16 Battery
On a video test, which involves turning the display brightness down to 170cd/m2, enabling airplane mode, and running a low-resolution video in VLC, the Acer Swift X 16’s 56Wh Acer Swift X 16 Laptop Battery lasted 8 hours and 12 minutes.
That’s not impressive, especially since the 16-inch LG Gram and Huawei MateBook 16s lasted 12 hours and 25 minutes and 9 hours and 51 minutes, respectively, but there are worse products. I was able to get through a full workday at the office on a single charge of the Acer Swift X 16 laptop battery and that was certainly no problem. Acer Swift X review: Verdict For the list price, the Acer Swift X 16 is a good, solid laptop. The display and sound system are good, while the build quality and keyboard are top-notch. The port selection is good, too, as is overall performance. The problem is that, at least in this case, the new Intel GPU isn’t particularly impressive. I’m sure Acer has a cost advantage in fitting the A370M instead of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 — and indeed, the Swift X 16 isn’t overpriced without a discrete GPU — but it’s simply not enough to turn a good laptop into an exceptional one.

Google launches new Gemini 2.0 model with experimental AI agents

Google is hyping up its new Gemini 2.0 models. The first model, Gemini 2.0 Flash, is already live, and comes with new AI agent experiences like Project Astra and Project Mariner. Google is ending 2024 with a bang. On Wednesday, the Mountain View giant announced a slew of AI news, including the release of Gemini 2.0, a new language model with advanced multimodal capabilities. The new model kicks off what Google calls the “agency era,” where virtual  AI agents will be able to perform tasks on your behalf.
Initially, Google released just one model in the Gemini 2.0 family: Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental, a super-fast, lightweight model that supports multimodal input and output. It can natively generate images mixed with text and multilingual audio, and can be seamlessly integrated into Google Search, code execution, and other tools. These features are currently in preview for developers and beta testers. Despite being smaller, 2.0 Flash outperforms Gemini 1.5 Pro in multiple areas, including factuality, reasoning, coding, math, and is also twice as fast. Regular users can try out the chat-optimized version of Gemini 2.0 Flash on the web starting today, and it will soon appear in the Gemini mobile app.
Google also showed off several impressive experiences built with Gemini 2.0. The first is an updated version of Project Astra, the experimental virtual AI agent that Google first showed off in May 2024. With Gemini 2.0, it can now hold conversations in multiple languages; use tools like Google Search, Lens, and Maps; remember the content of past conversations, and understand language with the latency of human conversation. Project Astra is designed to run on smartphones and glasses, but it is currently limited to a small group of trusted testers. People interested in trying out the prototype on an Android phone can join the waitlist here. There’s also this really cool multimodal real-time API demo, which is a bit like Project Astra, allowing you to interact with a chatbot in real time via video, voice, and screen sharing.
Next up is Project Mariner, an experimental Chrome browser extension that browses the internet and performs tasks for you. Available now to select testers in the US, the extension leverages Gemini 2.0’s multimodal capabilities to “understand and reason about information on the browser screen, including pixels and web elements like text, code, images, and forms.” Google admits the technology is still in its infancy and isn’t always reliable. But even in its current prototype form, it’s impressive, as you can see for yourself in the YouTube demo.
Google also announced Jules, an AI-powered code agent powered by Gemini 2.0. It integrates directly into your GitHub workflow, and the company says it can handle bug fixes and repetitive, time-consuming tasks “while you focus on what you actually want to build.”
For now, many of the new announcements are limited to early testers and app developers. Google says it plans to integrate Gemini 2.0 into its portfolio of products, including Search, Workspaces, Maps, and more, early next year. By then, we’ll have a better idea of how these new multimodal features and improvements translate to real-world use cases. No word yet on Gemini 2.0 Ultra and Pro models.

Clio: A privacy-preserving system that provides insights into real-world AI usage

What are people using AI models for? Despite the rapid growth in popularity of large language models, we still know very little about what they are used for.
This isn’t just out of curiosity, or even sociological research. Understanding how people actually use language models is important for security reasons: providers put a lot of effort into pre-deployment testing and use trust and safety systems to prevent misuse. But the scale and diversity of language models makes it hard to understand what they are used for (not to mention any kind of comprehensive security monitoring).
There’s another key factor that prevents us from having a clear understanding of how  AI models are used: privacy. At Anthropic, our Claude model is not trained on user conversations by default, and we take protecting our users’ data very seriously. So how do we study and observe how our systems are used while strictly protecting our users’ privacy?
Cl aude Insights and Observations (“Clio” for short) is our attempt to answer this question. Clio is an automated analytics tool that performs privacy-preserving analysis of real-world language model usage. It gives us insight into everyday usage at claude.ai in a similar way to tools like Google Trends. It’s already helping us improve our security measures. In this post (with the full research paper attached), we describe Clio and some of its initial results.
How Clio Works: Privacy-Preserving Analytics at Scale
Traditional top-down security approaches (such as assessments and red teams) rely on knowing what to look for in advance. Clio takes a different approach, enabling bottom-up pattern discovery by distilling conversations into abstract, understandable clusters of topics. It does this while protecting user privacy: data is automatically anonymized and aggregated, and only higher-level clusters are visible to human analysts.
All of our privacy protections are extensively tested, as described in our research paper.
How People Use Claude: Insights from ClioUsing Clio, we were able to gain insight into how people use claude.ai in practice. While public datasets such as WildChat and LMSYS-Chat-1M provide useful information about how people use language models, they only capture specific contexts and use cases. Clio gives us a glimpse into the full real-world usage of claude.ai (which may differ from other  AI systems due to differences in user base and model type).
Summary of Clio’s analysis steps, illustrated using fictional examples of conversations.
Here’s a brief overview of Clio’s multi-stage process:
Extracting Aspects: For each conversation, Clio extracts multiple “aspects” — specific properties or metadata, such as the topic of the conversation, the number of back-and-forths in the conversation, or the language used.
Semantic Clustering: Similar conversations are automatically grouped based on topics or general themes.
Cluster Descriptions: Each cluster receives a descriptive title and summary that captures common themes from the raw data while excluding private information.
Building Hierarchies: Clusters are organized into multi-level hierarchies for easier exploration. They can then be presented in an interactive interface that a human factors analyst can use to explore patterns along different dimensions (topics, language, etc.).

Vivo V40 Pro review

The Vivo V40 Pro takes great photos, has long battery life, and plenty of power for an affordable price. The problem, as always, is usability. Key FeaturesUltra-thin body, big capacityThe Vivo V40 Pro batteryis crammed into a 7.6mm-thick body, making it one of the best battery size-to-thickness ratios we’ve seen. It charges very quickly, too, with support for 80W wired charging.Impressive performance The upgrade to the MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ makes the Vivo V40 Pro the best V-series gaming phone yet. It’s a very noticeable improvement.Excellent cameras and image processing The four 50MP cameras and excellent processing power go hand in hand to take some of the best photos in this price range. It’s especially good for portraits and selfies.

Vivo V40 Pro side
The frame is made of plastic, which is the first sign that this isn’t a flagship. However, while the plastic may not feel that premium, it should be fairly durable. Vivo says it added reinforcement and cushioning materials to improve the phone’s resistance to drops and shocks.
A typical clear TPU case is included in the box, which isn’t anything special, but it’s nice to have, especially since cases for the V series are hard to come by. There’s also a factory-applied plastic screen protector included to keep the display from getting scuffed.
Screen8.78-inch 120Hz OLED2800 x 1260 resolution, curved edges4500 nits peak brightnessAt first glance, the V40 Pro’s display is nearly identical to the V30 Pro’s, with the exact same resolution and refresh rate. The difference this time around is that it has a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, a significant increase over the 2,800-nit output of its predecessor. Colors look fairly accurate by default, but there’s plenty of customization in the settings if you want to tweak the look. There are three main profiles you can choose from, and you can adjust the color temperature for each.

The specs remain largely the same, but the main sensor has been swapped from the Sony IMX920 to the IMX921Vivo Cell Phone battery.Life5500mAh Silicon Carbon Battery80W Wired Flash ChargingNo Wireless ChargingThe V40 Pro uses Vivo’s latest BlueVolt Vivo V40 Pro phone battery technology, which means the brand was somehow able to cram a whopping 5500mAh battery into a very slim body. This phone has a larger battery capacity than some of the most expensive flagship phones on the market, which is very impressive for a phone like this.
Unsurprisingly, this phone lasts a long time on a charge. I barely managed to get through two days without having to lift a finger, and it was not uncommon to go to bed with 60%Vivo V40 Pro phone battery left. Of course, theVivo V40 Pro phone batterylife depends a lot on what you’re doing. If you spend hours playing graphics-intensive games, or shooting a lot of video, then you may need to charge more frequently, but you shouldn’t have trouble by the end of the day regardless.
The phone charges very quickly, too. An 80W wall adapter is included in the box, and it takes about half an hour to charge from completely empty to 60%. A full charge takes about 50 minutes.
There’s no wireless charging, but that’s not surprising, as wireless charging is still a rarity in this price segment. Wireless charging is becoming more common, though, so hopefully we’ll see it in future V-series phones.

MSI Titan 18 HX review: the most powerful 18-inch gaming laptop

Overview: The MSI Titan 18 is the most classic high-performance work and gaming laptop available today. But that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for most potential buyers, considering the price MSI is offering, the peculiarities of the case, keyboard, monitor, and the performance and cooling of this series compared to other options. In the review, we’ll go into all these details in detail. This is my review of the 2024 MSI Titan 18 HX performance laptop.

However, it’s still somewhat gaming-oriented. The illuminated dragon logo on the lid and RGB touchpad allow you to control the RGB within the scope, or turn it off completely for business/school environments. But there’s still some blue around the exhaust pipes on the back of the laptop, pointing to the gaming DNA of this series. In comparison, something like the Blade 18, ROG Scar 18, or Alienware m18 with all the RGB lights turned off looks cleaner and is better suited to these strict use cases.

However, you’ll likely need to use both hands to move it around, as it weighs 8 lbs / 3.6 kg in our test configuration. That’s about a pound heavier than the Scar, Blade, and even the Predator Helios 18. And don’t forget, it also comes with a 400W power module, which adds 2.5kg / 1.15kg of weight to your backpack. In reality, a 400W charger isn’t that heavy, but it’s still bigger and heavier than the 330W modern chargers offered by most competitors. Overall, the weight difference between the Titan+ Charger and other 18-inch laptops is about 1 to 1.5 pounds, with the only heavier option being the Alienware m18, which weighs in at about 10 pounds for the Laptop+ Charger.

Overall, this MSI Titan 18 HX is an excellent case in terms of materials, build quality and ergonomics, however, some design choices are controversial, such as the limited RGB on the one hand and the questionable combination of black and grey areas with blue accents on the other, which may make this laptop unacceptable in very strict office or school environments.

Keyboard and touchpad – Cherry switches and RGB lighting

In everyday use, the 3840 x 2400 pixel resolution is superbly sharp. Whether you’re viewing SDR or HDR content, everything looks beautiful with colors that pop and are incredibly vibrant. Plus, it’s super bright with a matte anti-glare finish, making it suitable for a variety of use cases, including bright office spaces. Hardware and Performance

Our test model was the top-spec configuration of the 2024-generation MSI Titan 18 HX codenamed Titan 18 HX A14VIG – based on an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor, 64GB of DDR5-4000 memory and 2TB of fast SSD storage. Dual graphics cards: An Nvidia RTX 4090 16GB dGPU and UHD iGPU are integrated into the Intel processor.

Before we continue, please note that the review unit was sent by MSI running software (BIOS E1822IMS.10E, GeForce 551.76 drivers) that will be available in early April 2024. It’s been a few months since this laptop hit store shelves, so we don’t expect any subsequent software changes at this time, but a new BIOS update was released in mid-April, and others will likely be released throughout the year. We also tested the Balanced PD Power mode, which also limits the CPU to only 55W.

Finally, in the Extreme profile, CPU power consumption on battery power fluctuated between 25-55W, with some fluctuating results during this test. Details below: CPU-wise, this laptop benefits from higher PL1/PL2 power settings than any other mobile computer. However, as mentioned before, this results in a score improvement of almost 1-3% compared to the i9-13980HX in the Scar 18 or last year’s Titan GT77. This is meaningless in real-world applications.

On the GPU side, this Titan 18 outperforms other RTX 4090 laptop configurations by a few percentage points, but that’s because the default OC setting in Extreme mode is +200 MHz core/memory, which is more aggressive than the GPU’s default OC setting; other laptops are usually limited to around +100 MHz.

This is the extreme performance mode, but given the weight and cooling of this laptop, the cooling and performance of the other profiles should be particularly interesting, which we’ll discuss later. Battery life

This Titan comes with a built-in 99.9Wh MSI Titan 18 laptop battery , which is the largest MSI Titan 18 battery capacity for a laptop .

This is the MSI laptop battery life we got on our review unit with the Nvidia GPU in Optimus mode, a screen brightness of about 120 nits (brightness about 50), and a default refresh rate of 120Hz . This implementation consumes more power than the other i9-14900HX models we tested, but this is not surprising considering that the 4K display is also important. Therefore, you can expect 3-4 hours of use per day on a single charge, which is a good thing since you won’t get the battery efficiency of the MSI Titan 18 battery on the Intel HX platform.

I should also add that this Titan 18 laptop comes with a 400W power brick. It’s a fairly chunky unit, weighing over 2.5 pounds, with a fairly short cable that connects to the power brick. You can’t leave the brick on the floor; you can only connect the cable to a table, and you have to take the charger from the table. In comparison, the latest 330W chargers offered by rival laptops tend to be smaller and have longer, more ergonomic cables. This laptop supports USB-C charging with up to 100W of power through one of the left-side USB-C slots. I didn’t test the general behavior of the USB-C power supply or whether USB-C passthrough is implemented, but I expect it won’t be.

Sony WH-1000XM4 Premium Noise Cancelling Headphones

Some might even prefer the XM4 to the newer Sony XM5 for one simple reason – unlike the XM5, which lay flat, the XM4 can be folded up for easier portability. Beyond that, the much pricier XM5 comes with a better microphone, a newer design, and Bluetooth 5.2, while the XM4 only supports Bluetooth 5.0. The XM5 is also lighter, though not by much.
According to Rtings’ full review of both headphones, noise cancellation performance was about the same, but surprisingly, the XM4 did a better job blocking out “low, rumbling” sounds, such as engine noise, though the XM5 was more promising overall. The XM5 also had noticeably better audio performance, with better highs and mids, though the difference wasn’t dramatic. Rtings also found the XM4’s

life, which is another strength for this pair of headphones.
That being said, considering the price difference, the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones are an absolute steal for their current price. XM5 does outperform them in some aspects, but those who save $100 to buy XM4 will hardly have any room to complain. Sony said that WH-1000XM4 is equipped with exclusive high-fidelity noise reduction processor QN1 and dual noise sensor technology, which uses advanced algorithms to improve noise reduction performance, eliminate subtle noise in the background, and achieve pure sound quality at the listening moment; it is also equipped with new DSEE Extreme digital sound quality restoration technology, which automatically analyzes audio all the time through AI artificial intelligence learning technology, accurately and efficiently upsampling compressed sound sources to provide excellent sound quality performance.

Acer Nitro 16 review: An affordable all-rounder

Acer Nitro 16 Battery Laptop Battery

Decent but powerful, good value for money.
Bright and vivid 16-inch screen, plenty of ports, including on the rear,
The Acer Nitro series of gaming laptops upgrades with the Acer Nitro 16, bringing its previous entry-level standard to a comfortable mid-range price, with specs to match. In fact, it may be one of the best gaming laptops out there, offering enough performance to tackle the latest AAA games while keeping the cost relatively low.
I used the Acer Nitro 16 as my main laptop for two weeks, testing games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield as well as creative software like AdobePhotoshop and Blender, and I was impressed with its ability to handle all the tasks. The model I borrowed for testing isn’t even the most powerful of the Nitro 16 series, with configurations up to AMD Ryzen 9 CPUs and Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics, while my unit is an AMD Ryzen 7 and RTX 4060, which shows that it’s not just monster machines like Acer’s higher-end Predator Helios 18 that can bring the heat.
Acer Nitro 16 Battery Laptop BatteryLife. The lid features the series’ new “N” logo, printed on a slightly tinted gray plastic – it stands out in the light. The logo is surrounded by geometric pink and blue lines, introducing a new color theme for the series, with red accents replacing the black of previous models. While it looks pretty, it picks up fingerprints very easily – as someone who wears makeup regularly, I can imagine this will be a problem in the long run. Its deep keyboard deck also adds to the overall footprint, and since you’ll probably want to elevate this laptop for ventilation, placement and space are worth considering. Sure, it’s a bit heavy and funky in terms of design, and its speakers and webcam both feel relatively basic, but otherwise it’s a great all-rounder with decent battery life, quiet fans, plenty of ports, and a very bright and vibrant screen. The Nitro 16’s shell is plastic to keep costs down, but it’s very solid from the lid to the keyboard deck, with almost no flex, so there’s no worry about using it.This isn’t uncommon for gaming laptops in this price range, though, and overall I don’t think the
Acer Nitro 16 Battery Laptop Battery
will spend a lot of time out and about, so its reduced portability isn’t a big deal. You want an affordable option
For its price, the Nitro 16 is far from affordable, but even with its more powerful configurations, it’s certainly not the most expensive.
You want to barely play a few years of current-generation games
Sure, you can save money by opting for a lower-spec machine, but doing so sacrifices the future-proofing of models like the Nitro 16.

Razer Blade 14 review: Still Razer’s most full-featured gaming laptop

Razer Blade 14: Design and Build

Sturdy and stylish are the best words to describe the 2024 Razer Blade 14 chassis, which displays the sturdiness and premium look that Razer Blade laptops are known for. Razer’s rigorous manufacturing process is also the reason for its success, and it CNC mills the laptop chassis from a single block of aluminum.

To recap some of its strengths, the QHD+ (2560x1600p) panel has ultra-thin bezels and a 16:10 aspect ratio. It also has a fast 240Hz refresh rate. That last feature was like giving my gaming a luxurious fifth gear, as I did notice noticeably less screen tearing and glitches in games I often have issues with, like Elden Ring. Razer Blade 14 BatteryPerformance

To test the Razer  Laptop Battery

life, I fully charged the laptop’s 68.1-watt-hour Razer Blade 14 Laptop Battery. I cranked the volume to 50 percent and plugged in a pair of cheap headphones to reduce noise. I also switched the laptop to airplane mode and turned off the keyboard lighting. Finally, I set a 4K Hollywood movie to play on repeat and timed how long it took the laptop to go into standby mode.

Razer Blade 14: Keyboard and Trackpad

Upon booting up, the 2024 Razer Blade 14 lit up with a mesmerizing blue-lit display, which made me think of all the possibilities for personalizing each key on the Razer RGB Chroma keyboard.

The Razer Blade’s Precision Glass trackpad feels super smooth to the touch, but not too slippery. It allowed my fingers to glide quickly but stop precisely.

The Razer Blade 14’s display is the same as the 2023 model, which means it’s also gorgeous and incredibly smooth.

lasted 595 minutes (9 hours, 55 minutes), which is a very good score for a gaming laptop. But it’s worth noting that our PCWorld battery tests aren’t particularly power-hungry. In real-life gaming scenarios, battery life is likely to be only half as long as that Razer Blade 14 laptop battery(around four and a half hours), so if you plan on gaming nonstop all day, you’ll still want to carry around an adapter for the Razer Blade 14. Razer Blade 14: Should You Buy It? Despite its price tag, the Razer Blade 14 2024 delivers commendable performance and very smooth visuals for its size. For me, that’s what makes the Razer Blade 14 such a great choice—I basically see everything I want in a laptop here. A rugged build, great performance, and stunning visuals, all wrapped up in a compact, portable device. If you can afford one and you’re tempted, you should definitely take the plunge.
