JBL Clip 5 review: Affordable portable speaker with great sound quality

TechRadar VerdictDespite its compact size, this JBL Clip 5 speaker really delivers great-sounding music. The detail and powerful bass are impressive, although the highs can sound a little strained at volumes above 50%. Some great features include an adjustable EQ, Auracast connectivity, an IP67 rating, and a handy carabiner clip, making it an ideal outdoor speaker. From the first minute, I was impressed by the capabilities of this compact Bluetooth speaker.
JBL Clip 5 Speaker Battery
It lasted nearly 11 and a half hours, which is pretty good considering how loud the Clip 5 gets at that volume.
The JBL Clip 5’s sound quality is pretty impressive considering its size and price. It’s capable of producing surprisingly deep bass without losing detail, even with just the default JBL Signature EQ settings.

The Clip 5 is a small Bluetooth speaker that combines durability, practicality, and enjoyable sound. Is it one of the best Bluetooth speakers on the market? It all came at the right time. This speaker is IP67 water and dust resistant, which means I’m not restricted by where I can listen to music. It’s quickly become my favorite shower companion, and steam is no problem for it. We also put it through a water immersion test in the TechRadar test tank, and the Clip 5 continued to perform well afterwards, so whether you want to listen to music on the beach or sing karaoke in the shower, this speaker seems to be able to handle it. JBL took a sustainable approach with the Clip 5, incorporating some post-consumer recycled materials into the design. Great stuff. JBL website
JBL Clip 5 Speaker Battery
Up to 12 hours of battery life. When I played the TechRadar test playlist non-stop at 50 percent volume,

I could feel the bass coming off the surface of the speaker when I put it down. Not only was the bass punchy and dynamic on tracks like Allie X’s “Black Eye,” but it also had impressive low-end bass when listening to Massive Attack’s “Angel.” Cheaper speakers may not be able to handle the highs and intensity of some of the vocal parts on this track, making it sound harsh and strained. The Clip 5 handles this well, but the harshness does appear around 75 percent volume, which seemed to be a theme in my listening to a variety of tracks. The song Boom Boom by the same artist sounds good at 75 percent volume, with plenty of detail and drama, but the highs again start to feel a little harsh; at 50 percent volume, everything blends a little better. So this is definitely not a replacement for a party speaker if you want to play music loudly at a party.

Medion Erazer Beast X40 review: A true high-end gaming laptop

Equipped with a GeForce RTX 4090 and the Raptor Lake-HX updated Intel Core i9-14900HX, the Medion Erazer Beast X40 aims to take the throne of gaming laptops. With its powerful display, mechanical keyboard and impressive battery life, the “Aldi laptop” has more than a few strong arguments. Our test of the Medion Erazer Beast X40 shows whether it is worth buying. Medion Erazer Beast X40 review: design and workmanshipHigh-quality, solid designImpeccable workmanshipDiscreet RGB lighting

Medion Erazer Beast X40 Battery

power-hungry.
Medion Erazer Beast X40 Test: ConclusionWith the Medion Erazer Beast X40, the manufacturer has once again launched an excellent gaming notebook that has almost no major flaws even in the latest generation.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 combines the latest high-end CPU with the fastest mobile GPU to provide excellent performance for computationally intensive tasks, rendering, gaming, etc.
I also found the installation of two 1 TB SSDs instead of the 2 TB version commendable. I also liked the fact that fast DDR5-5600 RAM was already installed. This beast also scores for its display and excellent mechanical keyboard, as well as the option to further increase performance and reduce noise levels with optional water cooling.

The bottom, including the large air vents and rubber feet, is also in exactly the same shape. However, this is not a negative, as the design and workmanship of the Neo 17 are impressive. It comes with a large 330-watt power supply unit, and at 789 grams itself, it is not light either. We really like the simple, office-friendly design, and there is nothing to complain about in terms of build quality. The Medion Erazer Beast X40 is the first gaming notebook that our editorial office has received with a 14th-generation Intel Core CPU. In addition, the top model of this notebook is the Core i9-14900HX, which combines 24 cores with a clock speed of up to 5.8 GHz.
Therefore, apart from the CPU, the Medion notebook is similar to the XMG Neo 17 E23 that we tested in September 2023. The performance data here will be very exciting. Compared to the Schenker XMG Neo 17 notebook, the Erazer Beast X40 is slightly inferior in terms of connectivity. The competitor offers a faster 2.5 Gbit LAN. Two good-sounding speakers with Nahimic 3D sound and a webcam with Full HD resolution, including an infrared camera for Windows Hello login, round out this notebook. Windows 11 Home is the pre-installed operating system.Medion Erazer Beast X40 Battery
LifeBattery life of 2 hours and 31 minutesThe Medion Erazer Beast X40 has a 99.8 Wh battery that lasts a long time. In gaming mode, the laptop lasted for 2 hours and 31 minutes in PCMark 10’s Modern Office battery test. In the gaming benchmark, we clocked it at 1 hour and 30 minutes – note that both tests were conducted at the highest performance configuration. However, it’s worth mentioning the XMG Neo 17 E23 again, which was able to achieve significantly higher runtime: 3 hours and 42 minutes in the Modern Office test. This shows once again that Intel’s Raptor Lake-HX update has become more

The noise is quite loud under load, which is perhaps necessary. Apart from that, there is little to complain about, except that the contrast of the display may be a bit poor.
For those who are looking for a powerful and convincing 17-inch gaming notebook, the Medion Erazer Beast X40 will definitely please them.

Acer Swift X 16 review: A good laptop, but the curved GPU is disappointing

Acer Swift X review: What you need to knowThe Acer Swift X 16 is one of a new generation of 16-inch Windows laptops that aims to be a do-it-all mobile workstation with some lightweight gaming capabilities; other models include the ultra-light LG Gram 16, Huawei MateBook 16s or the more obviously gamer-centric HP Omen 16, as well as my personal favorite, the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus. The left and right edges feature two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C and a pair of USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, as well as an HDMI 2.1 connector and a 3.5mm audio jack. This is a fairly generous choice when many competitors ditch ports for aesthetics. However, the lack of a memory card reader is disappointing, and since there is no dedicated charging port, you lose one of the USB-C ports to power the Acer Swift X 16 batterypower supply. Acer Swift X review: keyboard, touchpad and webcam
The keyboard is typical Acer style. The layout is sensible and the dimensions are generous, with a number pad on the right, but the key action is a little thin, but it’s accurate and responsive. It’s also rich in color, producing up to 110.3% of the sRGB color space, while the Delta E color accuracy relative to sRGB is a commendable 1.4 (lower is better, 0 is perfect).
Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 color spaces are only 76% and 78% respectively, which is poor performance, which will limit the Swift X’s appeal to professional photographers. Acer Swift X review: performance andAcer Swift X 16 battery LifeThis is the fourth time we’ve tested a machine built around Intel’s 12-core Core i7-1260P processor, but this is the first time we’ve encountered it in conjunction with a discrete GPU, so it’s worth a brief introduction to Intel’s new GPU.
Intel’s new Arc series GPUs come in three models, numbered 3, 5 and 7. The lower-end parts of the two 3-series GPUs come with 4GB of dedicated vRAM, and a maximum TGP of 30W for the A350M, or 50W for the A370M. The maximum frequencies of each are also different, with the A350M0 peaking at 1,150Mhz, while the A370M peaks at 1,550MHz. The Swift X 16 uses the more powerful A370M.Acer Swift X 16 Battery
On a video test, which involves turning the display brightness down to 170cd/m2, enabling airplane mode, and running a low-resolution video in VLC, the Acer Swift X 16’s 56Wh Acer Swift X 16 Laptop Battery lasted 8 hours and 12 minutes.
That’s not impressive, especially since the 16-inch LG Gram and Huawei MateBook 16s lasted 12 hours and 25 minutes and 9 hours and 51 minutes, respectively, but there are worse products. I was able to get through a full workday at the office on a single charge of the Acer Swift X 16 laptop battery and that was certainly no problem. Acer Swift X review: Verdict For the list price, the Acer Swift X 16 is a good, solid laptop. The display and sound system are good, while the build quality and keyboard are top-notch. The port selection is good, too, as is overall performance. The problem is that, at least in this case, the new Intel GPU isn’t particularly impressive. I’m sure Acer has a cost advantage in fitting the A370M instead of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 — and indeed, the Swift X 16 isn’t overpriced without a discrete GPU — but it’s simply not enough to turn a good laptop into an exceptional one.

Harman Kardon Citation 100 review

Harman’s Citation 100 speaker is a lot of fun. The bass is strong and the sound fills the room, but it’s not the best choice if you’re after a speaker with neutral and balanced audio performance. The Harman Kardon Citation 100 is a large smart speaker that connects with Google Assistant. You can use its built-in microphone to request tracks and organize yourHarman Kardon Citation 100 Speaker battery  life.

It’s also one of the most serious-looking smart speakers on the market. It’s a large black tower speaker that matches the cute elements of the Libratone Zipp 2 and Amazon Echo Plus. It’s 27.5cm tall, 11cm taller than the Sonos One. For most people, this isn’t a major practical issue. The Citation 100 is an upright speaker. Its base doesn’t need to take up a lot of space, being about as tall as a bookshelf speaker.

However, if you want a smart speaker that people will barely notice unless it’s playing music, the Citation 100 isn’t an obvious choice. JBL makes smaller versions like the Citation One for this audience.

Aside from its massive size, the Harman Kardon Citation 100 is actually pretty neutral in appearance. A fabric mesh, predominantly black with a hint of dark gray, covers its sides. Harman Kardon also offers a gray version that looks a little less drab.

There’s a large plate of anodized aluminum on the top. Don’t expose the top to too much sunlight, as its paint will start to fade after a while.

Citation 100A holding a Samsung S20, showing the lock screen

All of the controls are on the Citation 100’s top plate, and none of them use proper buttons. It’s a capacitive touch surface with hotspots that adjust the volume, switch to Bluetooth, mute the microphone, and play/pause.

The Bluetooth button is one of the most important parts to note. Smart speakers use Wi-Fi to communicate with connected digital assistants, but if they also have Bluetooth, you can more easily play audio from any of your favorite phone apps.

The Harman Kardon Citation 100 doesn’t have everything, though. It doesn’t have a 3.5mm port, and it doesn’t easily plug into a turntable if that’s the last thing you want to add to your transition to all-digital music.

Citation 100 A photo of a large empty stadium

This is also a completely non-portable speaker. There’s no

Harman Kardon Citation 100 Speakerbattery inside

, no option to add a battery, and no waterproofing or sense of ruggedness. It’s designed for the home, not a road trip. There are two threaded stand mounting points on the bottom, though, which is handy.

The Harman Kardon Citation 100 is very easy to set up. Everything is handled through the Google Home app, which doesn’t let poorly developed custom apps ruin the experience. It also allows you to group the Citation with other speakers on the platform, not just JBL speakers.

There is one feature that isn’t as advanced as the average smart speaker, though. The Citation 100 only has two microphones, not the six found in Amazon’s Echo speakers, or even the relatively cheap Echo Dot.

Citation 100 orange-gold Oppo Find X2 rear panel view, top half view, against white background

Harman Kardon Citation 100 sound quality – while it does get loud, it’s not a particularly neutral-sounding speaker

Harman Kardon calls the Citation 100 “the smallest, most powerful-sounding smart home speaker.” Small might be a little misleading, but “powerful” is not. Its bass is deep and full, extending far beyond neutral sound quality into the party zone.

It would be wrong to call it a mindless bass monster. The Harman Kardon Citation 100 has very pleasant, sweet highs, good midrange texture, and the volume of the sound is enough that you will worry about disturbing the neighbors.

Harman Bluetooth Speakers Battery

Picture of the Citation 100 black BO earphone box on a white table

If you want rich sound that can fill a fairly large room at higher volumes without the strained tones heard with small speakers such as the Sonos One, this speaker is one of the best choices at this price point.

Bass integration is also good, although the clearly emphasized bass is not natural in definition. And this is the main potential stumbling block here. In a classic rock band arrangement, the Harman Kardon Citation 100 made the bass guitar stand out too much, as if the bassist’s brother was on the soundboard.

Nokia 3310 review: Selling nostalgia for fun and profit

If you want to sum up the new Nokia 3310, then typing is the best way to do it. I use

Nokia 3310 phone battery

For a long time, before the touchscreen revolution began, the main input method was through the numeric keypad. This meant either “up to four taps” on the 7 key to cycle through the letters p/q/r/s, or using Nokia’s T9 prediction engine, just press the key for the letter you want and it will work out what you want to type (so if the 7 fits the rest of the word pattern, it’s easy to think of it as an “s”).

The return of the Nokia 3310 as a product name relies heavily on nostalgia, and while many will remember the long

Nokia 3310 phone battery life, the first camera that could fit in your pocket, the portable music player that predated the iPod, and the ability to get through calls even in the weakest signal coverage, the real throwback is the input mechanism. In terms of design, the new Nokia 3310 is not an exact replica of the original 3310. The new design has more curves, a larger screen, and a four-way cursor and a central selection button (rather than the up/down/select buttons of the classic phone). All buttons are on the front panel, with no extra volume, power or camera keys in sight. It’s an updated design, but it’s clearly a return to the original, with a few touches to take into account modern technology You’re also stuck with a 2.5G data connection. Two Point Five Gee, that’s not a typo. No superfast 4G, no high-speed 3G, or even Wi-fi to use. Welcome back to the early 2000s. You won’t get a full web experience, but with the low-latency minimal data versions offered by social networks like Facebook, you can pretty much stay up to date on your friends’ activities. It’s going to be a tough sell for the Nokia 3310 to succeed in Western markets. The nostalgia card is going to win big here. For those who “just want a phone,” a phone like the Nokia 3310 is a great choice. If you’re heading to multi-day outdoor music festivals, camping trips, long drives, and need an absolutely reliable phone that focuses on making calls, you need a different combination of software and hardware than devices like the Android-powered Nokia 3.

When you absolutely, positively need a phone that lasts a month on a single charge and has 22 hours of talk time; when you need a phone tough enough to hammer a nail into; when you want to be free from software updates, notifications, and hours of life; you’ll realize that the Nokia 3310 is a great choice.

Samsung Galaxy S23 review: If compact is your style

Samsung’s smallest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S23, is an excellent small Android phone with a tweaked design and a larger battery Samsung releases its flagship phones to much fanfare every year – and the 2023 Galaxy S23 is no exception. However, as the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event confirmed, the year-on-year changes to this latest phone are not huge compared to its predecessor.

It uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform and comes with a larger battery that has increased by 200mAh, bringing the total capacity to 4,500mAh – which is really good for a phone of this size, especially with a processor that is smarter in terms of  Samsung Galaxy S23 phone battery

life. The cooling system is also larger than before, which should further extend the life of each charge. All in all, the Galaxy S23’s camera setup is still impressive, but in order for the series to really move forward in the next generation, I think the Galaxy S24 series needs to do more work and rethink its sensor selection to stay competitive. Especially when excellent phones like the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro come along and offer surprisingly impressive specs and effects. The Samsung Galaxy S23 doesn’t need to change a whole lot from its predecessor to continue to be a great small phone. “Small” is the operative word: this is a hugely successful small flagship, including a much better Samsung Galaxy S23 phone battery

than the previous model, and a clean design that’s in perfect sync with the flagship Galaxy line.

But, as I said about the S23 Ultra: I don’t think anyone currently using a Galaxy S22 will immediately rush out to buy the S23 upgrade, as the difference and now-higher price tag may not be worth it. But if you’re coming from a different phone, or perhaps an older device, and are looking for a great small Android flagship, well, Samsung has delivered once again.

The OnePlus 13 might come with one of the best iPhone features

One of the first next-generation flagship phones is expected to come from OnePlus, with rumors suggesting the company plans to launch its device as soon as the next-generation Snapdragon hardware is released. We’ve slowly been hearing about the features this OnePlus 13 phone might have, and the latest is truly fascinating.

The interesting new detail is that the OnePlus 13 might support “magnetic charging,” according to details from 91Mobiles. This might have been lost in translation, but it hints at magnetic wireless charging. Will the OnePlus 13 be one of the first Android devices to offer an equivalent to the very popular Apple MagSafe on the iPhone?

If you’ve been following developments in recent years, the appearance of MagSafe for Android won’t surprise you. This is most likely Qi2 charging, which has been waiting for its chance to improve the wireless charging experience on the device. If that’s the case, the OnePlus 13 won’t be the first Android phone to ship with the technology, as the first Android phone to ship with the technology was the HMD Skyline released in July 2024. Qi2 would be a great addition, though, and we expect to see more devices with this feature in 2025. However, it will be interesting to see if it’s just Qi2 or an adaptation of the standard to continue to offer faster OnePlus 13 phone battery

wireless charging, as the OnePlus 12 offers 50W when using an Airvooc charger. What else have we learned about the OnePlus 13?

We expect the OnePlus 13 to be powered by next-generation Snapdragon hardware, which will be announced at the Snapdragon Summit in the coming weeks. It could be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 or the Snapdragon 8 Elite, with the name yet to be announced.

In addition, we’ve heard that the phone could come with a 6,000mAh OnePlus 13 phone battery and 100W charging, and could also come with up to 24GB of RAM – although we don’t know what that RAM will do. Presumably, some of that RAM will be used to power AI features that haven’t been revealed yet.

The phone could have three 50-megapixel cameras on the back, including a 3x optical telephoto camera. The addition of Qi2 charging would make the OnePlus 13 compatible with a wide range of accessories. The idea behind Qi2 is to have a universal standard that works across all devices OnePlus 13 phone battery

provides better wireless charging at 15W, while also allowing for an ecosystem of accessories like car charging mounts

Surface Pro 11 review: Just one step away from your dream

Microsoft’s latest 2-in-1 is all Arm, the closest the company has ever come to combining laptop power withSurface Pro 11 tablet battery
life and flexibility. But x86 chips are too power hungry, and Arm chips are too slow. So Microsoft split the Surface line in two: a fast, short-lived x86-powered Surface, and a slow, long-lived Arm-powered Surface. But choosing between the two was never a dream of mine.
The Surface Pro 11 is supposed to have it all. And for the first time, it really does. Thanks to the new Snapdragon X processor, it’s the first Arm-based Surface Pro that runs Windows and most apps without a hitch. Not only that, it’s incredibly fast. It’s beautifully built and incredibly repairable, and the new Flex Keyboard is simply magical.
I’ve been using the Surface Pro 11 as my primary computer for more than a month, abandoning my desktop, my work MacBook Air, and my iPad. They’re all better than the Surface Pro in at least one way or another. The desktop has better app compatibility, and its eight-year-old midrange GPU blows away the GPU in the Surface Pro. The MacBook has better battery life, a cleaner OS, and is more comfortable to use on your lap. The iPad is a far better tablet. The Surface Pro costs more than any of those two combined. But it’s good enough in the areas that matter, and it’s more flexible than any of them. It’s the closest Microsoft has ever come to fulfilling its dream. Most of the time, I got about eight hours of  Surface Pro 11 tablet batterylife with the screen at about 50 or 60 percent brightness, and with all of Microsoft’s power-saving suggestions enabled, including dark mode and setting the Pro to sleep after three minutes of inactivity. One day, I got nearly 11 hours. But with great power comes great power. Applications that really push the processor, like our Cinebench benchmark, eat into  Surface Pro 11 tablet batterylife—and for some reason, so do video calls.
Outside of video calls and benchmarks, I saw the battery drop by 9 or 10 percent every hour. When I was on a call, the Surface Pro 11 tablet battery
dropped twice as much, and on days with more meetings, it lasted nearly six hours on a charge. And the whole time, I was on a lousy charge.
Microsoft calls the Surface Pro a 2-in-1. But you can’t really get the two in one without compromising in some way. It’s less comfortable to hold than a laptop, less comfortable to use than a tablet, and it costs as much as to buy both. But there’s no better tablet for office work, and no more flexible laptop, especially now that you don’t have to choose between decentSurface Pro 11 tablet battery life and the ability to run real apps smoothly.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 review: Tried and true

This isn’t an ambitious smartwatch, but honestly, it doesn’t need to be. Of all the wearables Samsung has coming out in 2024, the $299.99 Galaxy Watch 7 is the least exciting. It’s not an entirely new category like the Galaxy Ring, nor is it a new form factor like the Galaxy Watch Ultra. Even at my launch event, Samsung waved, “Oh, the Galaxy Watch 7 is here too — and, well, it’s really great!”
In other words, if you have a Galaxy Watch 4, 5, or 6, you know what you’re getting. In a year where Samsung has restructured its wearable lineup, the Galaxy Watch 7 is a staunch part of it. After using the Galaxy Ring and Ultra for the past three weeks, I’ve come to appreciate that.
Galaxy Watch 7 BatteryLife Still Middling
Speaking of comfort, wearability is a big plus for the base Galaxy Watch. The Ultra was bulky on my wrist, and I had trouble getting used to the new FDA-approved sleep apnea detection feature, which depends on a good fit. Not so with the Galaxy Watch 7. I have the 40mm Watch 7, and the sleep apnea feature works without issue. It’s just personal taste, but I also prefer the way the simpler round display feels on my wrist compared to the Ultra. The slimmer profile is another huge benefit. Even though it’s summer, I know this watch won’t get caught on jacket sleeves or other clothing. But just as my experience with the Ultra reminded me how I took the Watch 7’s chic, thin design for granted, it also highlighted its biggest weakness: Galaxy Watch  Battery life.
Even after a calibration period, I only got about 24 hours of use on a single charge. That hasn’t changed much from the Galaxy Watch 4, 5, and 6. The main difference with the 7 is that I can reliably get through a full day, whereas before I sometimes struggled to even do that. (People with the 44mm Watch 7 will have more time, since it has a largerGalaxy Watch7 battery
.) Fast charging would alleviate some of the pain, but I’ll add that I’m a heavy user of GPS and keep the always-on display enabled most of the time. You’ll get better mileage if you stick to the gym or turn off AOD.
None of this is surprising, since not much has changed on the Watch 7 hardware-wise. The only differences are that it has a new 3nm Exynos W1000 chip and an upgraded three-in-one BioActive sensor — and it runs Wear OS 5 and One UI 6 Watch out of the box, but those will eventually come to older Galaxy Watches, too. (You can already download the beta.) Overall performance is fast, though I didn’t notice any noticeable accuracy gains from the new BioActive sensor. Most of the new features come down to health features: AI health insights, an energy score for measuring recovery, sleep apnea detection, and a puzzling AGE metric that purportedly measures metabolic health using the interaction of sugar with fat and protein.
