Samsung Galaxy A50 review: Slim bezels, high brightness and sturdy build make this smartphone a hit

This is the company’s first mid-range offering with anin-display fingerprint scanner.

Some of the otherfeatures that we liked about the phone include dedicated microSD slot forstorage expansion, loud output from the external loudspeaker and Dolby Atmos
for audio.

Price: Rs 19,990 (4+64), Rs 22,990
(6+64)

Rating: 3.5 stars

Specs: 6.4-inch super amoled Infinity U
display, 2,340 x 1080 pixels, Exynos 9610 processor, 4/6GB RAM, 64GB storage,
dedicated microSD slot, triple rear camera: 25MP f1.7 + 8MP f2.2 ultrawide+ 5MP
f2.2 depth sensor, 25MP front camera, in-display fingerprint scanner, dual band
WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C, Android 9.0, 4,000mAh battery, 166 grams

Pros: Beautiful large amoled display,
stylish design, good camera performance in daylight, great battery life with fast
charge support, fast face unlock

Cons: Laggy interface, weak low light
camera performance, slow fingerprint scanner, glossy back prone to smudge and
fingerprints, plastic body, uses older Gorilla Glass 3

Samsung is on a roll these days – apart fromtheir excellent flagship S10 series, they have introduced a series of mid-range
A series phones. Thanks to the increased competition, Samsung is also getting
really aggressive with pricing and this is why the A50 starts at Rs
19,999.

Thisis the company’s first mid-range offering with an in-display fingerprintscanner. But hold on to your excitement – it doesn’t use the S10’s ultra-sonic
fingerprint scanner but the more conventional optical scanner that most other
brands (like OnePlus, Vivo, Oppo use). While the competition is using fourth
generation in-display sensors, the A50’s fingerprint sensor feels like first
gen technology. It is slow to recognize the fingerprint and fails to work about
50% of the time. Samsung has pushed out a software update to improve the
speed/accuracy but we only saw a marginal improvement. In comparison, the face
unlock works smoothly – much better than what we have seen on the M series
smartphones.

Ithas Samsung’s octa-core Exynos 9610 processor coupled with 4/6GB RAM and 64GBstorage.
The A50 has a gorgeous 6.4-inch, super amoledfull HD display with the Infinity U style notch. The screen is a joy to
consuming content on and impresses with slim bezels, high brightness and deep
blacks. However, it uses older Gorilla Glass 3 for screen protection which is a
letdown. We liked the sturdy build quality of the device despite the
polycarbonate back panel. The back panel is super glossy and reflects light in
all colours of the rainbow. As usual, the glossy finish is prone to smudges and
fingerprints.

Performanceis where the phone confused us. It has Samsung’s octa-core Exynos 9610
processor coupled with 4/6GB RAM and 64GB storage. Our review was the 4GB RAM
variant and it could play games like PUBG and Asphalt smoothly. However, when
it came to performance, we were surprised to see random lags and sluggishness.
This was true of basic tasks like swiping left to the Bixby screen, switching
between running apps, editing photos and even closing apps to go back to home-screen.
This becomes more visible if there are more than 10 apps running in the
background – our theory is that is no optimization between the new Exynos chip
and the operating system. Battery life is the strong point of the phone – we
were able to get close to a day and half backup regularly. Plus, there is
support for fast charging and a fast charger is provided in the box.

TheGalaxy A50 features a triple camera setup on the rear which delivers greatresults in daylight. Photos have good amount of details and the camera
interface is zippy. There is a wide-angle lens which is great for shooting
landscapes and architecture. The third lens is a depth sensor which helps with
live focus and offers good edge detection. Portrait photos turned out great
with a good amount of bokeh but there are phones with much better camera
available in this price segment such as the Poco F1. Trouble is that in low
light, the photos suffer from soft details and we often ended with blurry
photos. We also didn’t like the fact that video recording is limited to full HD
resolution in the default camera app and that you cannot switch between the
standard and wide-angle lens while shooting. The front facing 25MP camera also
perform the same as rear camera – great photos in daylight but lacking in
detail when used in lowlight.

Someof the other features that we liked about the phone include dedicated microSDslot for storage expansion, loud output from the external loudspeaker and DolbyAtmos for audio. However, at Rs20k, the Samsung Galaxy A50 is a tough sell. The
Poco F1 offers much better performance with its Snapdragon 845 processor at the
same price and even scores high on camera and battery performance. The Redmi
Note 7 Pro delivers a better processor, premium glass design, excellent 48MP dual
rear camera and similar battery life at just Rs 13,999. If you are stuck on the
Samsung brand, you can get the Galaxy M30 at Rs 14,999 with a similar super
amoled display, triple camera setup and a large 5,000mAh battery.

Choose the right power bank for your phone

To ensure safety of your costly smartphones, choose a powerbank that comes with a power-cut power in the event of a short circuit.

To ensure safety of your costly smartphones, choose a power bank that
comes with a power-cut power in the event of a short circuit.
No matter what is the worth or the quality of our smartphones, without
charged batterie ..

Nomatter what is the worth or the quality of our smartphones, without charged
batteries, they are of no use.

Thankfully, we have power banks to charge oursmartphones on the go, but choosing the correct power bank for your phone is no
less a task. We present to you some quick tips that would help you choose one.

1. First and foremost, you need to
know about the battery size and the charger specifications of your smartphone.
You would find it printed on the battery and the charger or on the box in which
your cell was packed.

2. The power bank that you buy should atleast have the same size as your device battery. This would ensure that your
battery gets fully charged at least once with the power bank. However, if your
phone frequently runs out of battery, get the highest milliampere hour (mAh)
power bank that you can afford so that you have enough battery stored for
emergencies.

3. The output voltage of the powerbank should be equal to or higher than that of your device.

4. Depending upon the numberof devices you carry, look for the number of ports and cables that your power
bank should come with. This would let you charge more than one device at a
time, saving you time.

5. To ensure safety ofyour costly smartphones, choose a power bank that comes with a power-cut power
in the event of a short circuit.

6. For a longer life of yourpower bank, look for the auto-cut feature in your bank. This would prevent it
from getting overcharged.

7. Sometimes, it is usefulto spend a little to save you further costs. Always go with a branded power
bank from a trusted seller. Don’t be fooled by tall claims. A power bank can
cost you your beloved smartphone.

Sri Lanka attacks: ‘International network’ linked to bombings

A wave of bombings that killed 290 people in Sri Lanka on Sundaywas carried out with the support of an international network, officials said.
The government has blamed a little-known local jihadist group,
National Thowheed Jamath, although no-one has yet admitted carrying out the
bombings.
Police arrested 24 people in a series of raids and the
president’s office declared a state of national emergency.
The emergency declaration, which comes into effect from midnight
(18:30 GMT) on Monday, will give police and military extensive powers to detain
and interrogate suspects without court orders.
OnMonday, another blast rocked a street near a church in the capital, Colombo.
Police were attempting to defuse explosives in a vehicle used by the attackers
when it blew up. It is not yet known if anyone was hurt.
Sri Lankan authorities were warned about a bomb threat from
National Thowheed Jamath a full two weeks before the attacks, cabinet spokesman
Rajitha Senaratne said at a press conference.

He said that the warnings were not passed on to the Prime Minister,
Ranil Wickremesinghe, or his cabinet. Mr Wickremesinghe acknowledged that
security services had been “aware of information” but had not acted
on the information.

“They were talking about isolated, one or two incidents.
Not like this,” he said.
He said “all important departments of the police” were
informed about the warning, but acknowledged that no action was taken.

Suspicion of
international support

Mr Senaratne said that authorities believed the bombers hadinternational support. “We do not believe these attacks were carried out
by a group of people who were confined to this country,” he said, adding:
“There was an international network without which these attacks could not
have succeeded.”
“The intelligence reports [indicate] that foreign terrorist
organisations are behind the local terrorists. Therefore, the president is to
seek the assistance of the foreign countries,” his office said.

Sri Lanka’s National Security Council said a “conditional
state of emergency” from midnight would target “terrorism” and
would not limit freedom of expression.
In another development, the US State Department issued revised
travel advice urging greater caution, adding, “Terrorist groups continue
plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka.”

How did the attacks
unfold?

Three churches in Negombo, Batticaloa and Colombo’s Kochchikade
district were targeted during Easter services. Blasts also rocked the
Shangri-La, Kingsbury and Cinnamon Grand hotels in the country’s capital.
Police did not release a breakdown of how many people were
killed and wounded at each location.

All the
attacks were carried out by suicide bombers, officials said.
Police then carried out raids on two addresses and there wereexplosions at both. One was in Dehiwala, southern Colombo, and the other was
near the Colombo district of Dematagoda in which three officers were killed.
An
improvised explosive device – a 6ft-long [1.8m] plastic pipe packed with
explosives – was also found and defused near the airport in Colombo.

What do we know
about the attackers?

National Thowheed Jamath was later named by a government
spokesman as the main suspect.

The group
has no history of large-scale attacks but came to prominence last year when it
was blamed for damaging Buddhist statues.
Addressing reports that officials had had prior intelligence of
forthcoming attacks, Mr Wickremesinghe said: “We must look into why
adequate precautions were not taken. Neither I nor the ministers were kept
informed.”

A deep
wound to the nation

Anbarasan Ethirajan, BBC News,
Colombo
Very few here expected these massive attacks. The co-ordination,
sophistication and timing may indicate international support, but it is not
clear yet if National Thowheed Jamath, if it is indeed responsible, has links
with global jihadist groups.
It is thought that some Muslim youths in Sri Lanka wereradicalised after clashes last year in Kandy district between the majoritySinhala Buddhists and Muslims. Videos posted on social media showed hardline
Islamists and Sinhala hardliners promoting hatred. But why were the Christians
targeted? They are also a minority in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Muslims are baffled
by the attacks, as well as nervous and afraid.
Sri Lanka has experience of such attacks – suicide bombers were
used by Tamil Tiger rebels during the civil war. But the ruthlessness of the
these new atrocities is a shock, and the number of dead is a deep wound to the
nation, a wound that will take much time to heal.

Who are the victims?

The vast majority of those killed are thought to be Sri Lankan
nationals, including scores of Christians who died at Easter church services.
The ministry of foreign affairs said it had identified 31
foreign nationals among the dead, with 14 unaccounted for. The death toll
included at least eight British citizens and at least eight citizens of India.
They include three of thechildren of Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen, a family
spokesman confirmed to the BBC. Mr Povlsen owns the Bestseller clothing chain
and holds a majority stake in clothing giant Asos.
British lawyer Anita Nicholson died alongside her two children,
Alex, 14, and Annabel, 11, when a suicide bomber detonated a device in the
breakfast queue at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo.
“Anita was a wonderful, perfect wife and a brilliant,
loving and inspirational mother to our two wonderful children … Alex and
Annabel were the most amazing, intelligent, talented and thoughtful children
and Anita and I were immensely proud of them both and looking forward to seeing
them develop into adulthood.”

Know the differences between iPhone XS and iPhone XR

Unlikeprevious iPhone launches, it’s not immediately obvious which iPhone you shouldbuy if you want the best. Or rather, the iPhone XS is clearly the flagship
model, but the iPhone XR, launching a month later, has some features which are
better than its sibling.
So, what are the important differences to know before you choose
which new iPhone X is right for you?

The differences at a glance

The main differences between the iPhone Xs and the iPhone XR are
as follows

iPhone XS vs. iPhone XR

For
this post, I’ll leave out the iPhone XS Max. It’s exactly the same as the
iPhone XS, only bigger, and with a slightly longer battery life. Instead we’ll
compare the iPhone XS and XR.

These are the important differences between the two new
regular-size models:

The iPhone XS has an OLED screen, with amazing
colors and
3D Touch, Apple’s tech that lets the display discern “how deeply
users press the display.” The iPhone XR gets a new Liquid Retina LCD display,
which ditches 3D Touch.
Hands-on reports say the iPhone XR has the best display of any LCD
iPhone to date.

Screen size

Weirdly, the cheaper iPhone XR has a larger screen than theiPhone XS — 6.1 inches versus 5.8. That makes the $999 XS the smallest of the
new lineup, but not by much.

Weight

Aluminum versus steel

The iPhone XR has an aluminum band surrounding its perimeter,
whereas the iPhone XS has steel. Both devices have a glass back.

Waterproofing

 Both
the XS and XR can hold out for up to a half-hour underwater, enough for a few
quick submarine selfies. But the XS can do this at a depth of 2 meters, versus
just 1 meter (3 feet, 3 inches) for the XR. Find out more about the
iPhoneXS and XR IP6X ratings in our explainer post.

Battery life

The iPhone XS gets less battery life than the cheaper XR: 20hours talking versus 25 hours. The other guidelines — internet use, video
playback and so on — are all similarly better on the cheaper iPhone.

Cameras

This
is the big difference. The XS boasts two cameras in the back (one wide-angle
with an ƒ/1.8 aperture, one telephoto with ƒ/2.4 aperture). The XR gets just
one, but it’s the exact same unit as the wide-angle camera in the XS. Despite
this, the iPhone XR can pull off Portrait mode, previously only available in
iPhones with two cameras. The full name for this feature in the new iPhones is
“Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and depth control.” The iPhoneXR Portrait Mode does suffer one key limitation, though: It only
works on people. Also, on iPhone XS, the Portrait Lighting feature offers five
effects (Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono). On iPhone XR, you only
get three (Natural, Studio, Contour).
One thing g to note — Portrait Mode on the XR only works onpeople. That’s because it uses the fancy Neural Engine on the A12 Bionic chip
to to recognize faces, and cut them out from the background. The XS uses the
stereo capabilities of its two cameras to make a proper depth map of a scene,
which means that its Portrait Mode works with anything.

Colors

The iPhone XS
comes in gold, space gray and silver. The iPhone XR comes in white, black,
blue, yellow, coral and Product Red.

XS vs. XR: Which iPhone should you get?

It’s hard to choose which model you might buy. If you want the
very best camera and display, go for the XS. But the XR is a little big bigger,
and still has a great screen and the new advanced bokeh and Depth Control
features. Both have edge-to-edge screens, both have Face ID and Animoji, and
both have the new A12 Bionic chip, which powers all the 2018 iPhones’ newphoto features as well as their advancedAI capabilities.
It’s not an easy decision. The “cheap” iPhone this year is as
good — relatively speaking — as the flagship models of previous years.
In the end, most folks will be happy with the iPhone XR. But
there’s one other difference. You’ll have to wait a month longer for the XR,
and that may be enough to make many people drop the extra $250 on a high-end
model they don’t really want or need.
