In a series of posts on Twitter, Tatyana Shishkova listed more than a dozen applications that appear harmless on the surface but contain dangerous malware. Joker is also a particularly annoying Trojan. After you install the application that contains it, it usually sleeps in the background for a period of time before starting to perform its dirty work. It has been a problem on Android for a long time.
It will cause harm to you and your phone. It can steal the content of SMS messages and even sign up for a subscription for you for hundreds of pounds or dollars a month without your knowledge. Google has removed these applications from the Play Store, but if you have installed any of the following applications on any Android device, you should remove them immediately. Some of these applications have similar names. Shiskova warned Battery Charging Animations Battery Wallpaper on November 4, but even though it was removed from the Play Store a week later, a similar sound-sounding Battery Charging Animations Bubble Effects application appeared, which also infected Joker.
The application developer and the application icon are not the same, but the format of the developer name used is very similar: Erica E. Guel and Charles M. Roseman show that the people behind them are the same. In fact, most of the applications in this list use the same naming format.
How to avoid becoming a victim of Joker malware? Here are some tips:
You think it’s safe to download applications from the Google Play Store. The reality is that even Google cannot prevent applications with malware from passing its security measures. The usual advice is to avoid installing apps from outside the Play Store, but this does not apply here.
However, you can try to avoid installing dodgy apps by reading reviews before downloading any apps. This may or may not tell you whether it is dangerous.
You can choose to install only applications from trusted developers, but a better approach is to use powerful antivirus software on your Android phones and tablets. Some of them are free, so there really is no reason to leave your device unprotected.
Apps are not the only way for malware (including Joker) to enter your device. You may also be attracted by phishing emails or messages that will take you to fake login pages, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and other well-known websites. Similarly, antivirus software can warn you when a website is not a genuine article, but you should read the message carefully and check the link before clicking.
