Garmin Fenix 5 multisport watch review
The multisport watch king returns
The Garmin Fenix 5 remains an excellent multisport watch that successfully combines all elements of Garmin's incredible range of specialist devices. For those pursuing running, cycling, swimming, hiking and even golfing, this is an unrivalled device.
Of course, there are drawbacks.
The first is the price, but the Garmin Fenix 5 is essentially a 6-in-1 device - more if you count the options provided by Garmin Connect IQ.
Garmin Fenix 5 watch batterylife
Despite the reduced size from the Fenix 3, the battery life of the Garmin Fenix 5 watch has not been affected. Garmin claims that the Fenix 5 has aGarmin Fenix 5 watch batterylife of up to two weeks as a watch, which makes perfect sense. But no one should spend a lot of money on a watch - at least not one this ugly. What matters is how much exercise you can do
Our only real complaint is the optical heart rate sensor, which, unlike other aspects of the Garmin Fenix 5, is not gold standard. But for the truly active, the Fenix 5 is the best on the market. The Garmin Fenix 5 was one of the most capable multisport outdoor watches on the market, blending some of the most detailed metrics into a single device. It's now been replaced by the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus, but is widely available through some great Garmin deals.
There's still a color screen, and the visuals look a little sharper, thanks to a new 240 x 240 resolution (up from 218 x 218)Best GPS Running Watches
The Fenix 5 makes better use of Garmin Connect IQ, making it a more personal, versatile sports watch.
We found that with full GPS tracking turned on while running, cycling or hiking,
The Garmin Fenix 5 watch batterylasted about 14 hours - less than the 20 hours Garmin claims. However, that's with Bluetooth connected and all settings set to default, so you can probably get a few more hours out of it. It should get you through all but the toughest ultramarathons.
We've experienced issues with the UltraTrac and are still working on resolving those issues, so we can't verify Garmin's claim of 60 hours of tracking time, but rest assured we're actively testing it properly and will update accordingly. While the Fenix 5 offers a lot of benefits for all-day wear, it's still not a very pretty watch. It's industrial and bulky, with five screws on the bezel. But the lighter and smaller design does mean you can wear it all day, and those who love the outdoors can turn it into a permanent watch.
