Toshiba Portege X30 review: What business laptops can learn from consumer devices

The Portégé x30 is designed very simply like a work laptop, but it incorporates some of the features we've seen on consumer devices recently: a thin and light construction, USB Type-C and Thunderbolt, Windows Hello, and more. It's claimed to last up to 18 hours on a Toshiba Portégé X30 Laptop Batterycharge, which, if true, would be a boon for business users and regular consumers alike. The Portégé x30 is a clamshell laptop that tries to strike a balance between business and consumer laptops, and in some ways it combines the two very well, but in other ways it leaves something to be desired.
Another feature of this monitor is Windows Ink: it's stylus compatible, although the x30 doesn't come with one and Toshiba doesn't list it as an optional accessory for the device. I imagine Windows Ink would be useful if you need to annotate PDFs or take notes on shared documents, but the x30's clamshell design isn't ideal for handwriting. The lid can only tilt to about 130 degrees, so it's not the most comfortable position for handwriting. Toshiba sells a convertible version of this business laptop, the Portégé X20W, which is better suited to multiple usage modes and Windows Ink.
Consumer laptops are getting less and less bezel space these days, but that's obviously less important for business devices. The x30's bezels are fairly thick, measuring about 10mm on the sides, 20mm on the top, and 30mm below the screen.

The top bezel houses the Windows Hello-enabled webcam, infrared camera, and facial recognition sensors. If you've set up Windows Hello to use Face Unlock x30, these sensors will rapidly flash bright red lasers every time you open the device's lid to use it. While you might be temporarily blinded the first time you do so, it's a small price to pay for such a fast unlocking and login mechanism. While it's hard to compare a clamshell laptop like the x30 to a convertible like the Elitebook x360, Toshiba and HP are two companies to watch in the business laptop space. Toshiba's device is a modern take on the black rectangular design of old-school work laptops.
