Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL RV1001AE Review A self-cleaning robot vacuum cleaner
The Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL RV1001AE vacuum's base station holds up to a month's worth of dust and debris, and features a self-cleaning brush roll and lots of smart features for a truly low-maintenance experience. Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL RV1001AE Vacuum BatteryLife (Tested) RV1001AE Design and FeaturesThe IQ Robot XL has an all-black, utilitarian design. It measures 12.9 x 12.6 x 3.5 inches (L/W/H) and weighs 5.87 pounds. The base stands about 15 inches tall. It won't win any awards for style, but the way a robot vacuum looks isn't more important than whether it works well, and this one does. This vacuum doesn't come with a remote, but you can control it with the physical Clean and Dock buttons on the top of the device, through the SharkClean app on your phone (available for Android and iOS), or with voice commands through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Between the Clean and Dock buttons is the IQ Navigation Module, which allows the robot to map your home and assess its location. The robot's dustbin has a high-efficiency filter that captures dust, dander, and allergens in the air while vacuuming.
It can "comb hair and actively remove". The robot has a "Charge and Resume" feature, which is off by default but recommended for homes over 1,500 square feet. When enabled, it will return to the dock to charge when the battery is low, and then continue from where it left off. To enable/disable "Charge and Resume", press and hold the Clean button for 15 seconds.
It also offers a feature called "Empty and Resume" specifically for homes with pets. When enabled, the robot will return to the dock to empty the dustbin after 30 minutes to avoid being overly clogged with pet hair, and then continue cleaning from where it left off. Shark says you shouldn't enable this feature if your home is smaller than 1,000 square feet. To enable/disable Empty and Resume, press and hold the Dock button for 15 seconds. When charging, it's best to prepare your home first. Shark recommends clearing all cords, removing items like toys, clothing, and curtains from the floor, and opening doors to areas you want to clean and map. For best results, Shark recommends running the robot in well-lit conditions. The company also says not to move the robot or dock, as doing so will affect its ability to map your home.
RV1001AE Cleaning PerformanceThe IQ Robot XL moves quickly and efficiently, cleaning in straight lines rather than haphazardly sweeping from wall to wall like some cheaper robot vacuums. In my first test run, the IQ Robot XL cleaned for 88 minutes in Normal mode before successfully returning to the dock to empty its bin and recharge. When setting up the robot, I chose to enable the Empty and Resume feature, so after 30 minutes of my first test run, the IQ Robot XL navigated back to the base station, emptied the dustbin, and immediately resumed cleaning.
In a second test, the robot cleaned for 97 minutes in Normal mode, beating the Roomba i3+ (which lasted 90 minutes on that test) but falling far short of the Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI (which cleaned for 170 minutes), the longest of any robot vacuum we've tested. The nearly 100-minute Shark IQ Robot XL battery Life results aren't bad, but we've tested many models that top 100 minutes.
