JBL Flip 7: 5 Things We'd Like to See

1. More Forgiving Sound

Frankly, we wouldn't drastically change the sound of the current Flip 6. It's lively, full and vibrant, and the audio profile feels energetic and musical. Things aren't perfect, though.

2. Extend the JBL Flip 7 Bluetooth Speakers Battery life

This is a no-brainer. Maybe they hit on the right numbers, but the Flip series has had a combined battery life of 12 hours over the past three generations (Flip 4, Flip 5 and Flip 6).

The possible danger is that JBL would have to make the whole device bigger to accommodate a bigger battery, which would significantly improve these nu mbers. Any increase in battery life would be welcome, though, especially considering that this has been an area of ​​stagnation for the entire series.

life is perfectly judged and we don't have any more time here, can we reduce the time it takes to charge a future Flip 7? When you just want to get up and listen to your favorite tunes, the Flip 6's 2.5 hours

Total charge time isn't ideal, so being able to get an hour or two from just 10 minutes of charging will be very convenient.

We noted in our review that while the Flip 5 was fairly forgiving and easygoing in terms of high frequencies, the Flip 6 "definitely exposes some harshness in recordings." We'd say that this "honesty" of sound could be smoothed out in the high end for a truly balanced, consistently enjoyable listening experience when the new model eventually hits the market.

4. Other nifty features

The Flip 6 isn't badly feature-rich, but it's not quite there yet. There's room for improvement, and considering JBL is bringing Auracast to many of its upcoming models, including the cheaper, smaller Go 4 and Clip 5 models, we'd like to see the seventh-generation Flip make it, too.

This doesn't have to be the end. Rival Ultimate Ears' "Outdoor Boost" is a handy way to boost the sound of your speakers when you're not indoors (see Epicboom), and the Flip 7 model could adopt a similar version of that. We also lamented the fact that you couldn't use the Flip 6 to make calls (no built-in mic, sadly) and that there was no 3.5mm auxiliary input for wired listening when the battery was dead, so these are new additions we're happy to see. After all, the auxiliary input hasn't gone away, has it?!

5. Optimizing the design

There are some parts of the Flip series that can't really be changed. For example, going larger is not recommended, as it would go against its portable design philosophy, and any smaller size would affect the size of the drivers used in the Flip. If you want a larger speaker (and higher performance), you can always opt for the Charge 5 or Xtreme 3.

That's not to say the Flip 6's design can't be improved. There's a chance that the entire series is getting a little stale, so perhaps some visual and practical tweaks, such as more device controls or more exciting colorways, would add some visual flair to an already pleasing composition. The device's IP rating isn't perfect - the Flip 6's IPX7 rating doesn't account for dust getting into the device, so a design change to allow it to receive IP67 (or similar) certification would be desirable, especially to give users peace of mind when taking the Flip 7 to the beach.
