Toshiba Encore 2 review: This Windows 8 tablet is great for the price
The Encore 2 is one of the first "cheap" Windows 8 tablets, and there's no doubt we'll start seeing more of them. In fact, several were unveiled at this year's IFA event, including a $119 Encore 2 Mini with a 7-inch display.

Encore 2 Specs
Inside, the Encore 2 is equipped with a 1.4 GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor, 1 GB of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a Micro USB 2.0 port for charging and connecting external devices. Onboard storage is 32 GB, and a 64 GB version is also available. That's more than you'd expect from a device at this price point with 16 GB or less. It's also easy to increase storage by adding a microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card (up to 128 GB).
Toshiba also throws in a free year of Office 365 Personal subscription (normally $69.99 per year), which includes 1 TB of One Drive storage. You can install Office 365 Personal on one tablet and one PC or Mac.
The screen is definitely not HD—it's only 720p, in fact, but I guess it's good enough. The front and rear cameras are adequate, but nothing special. The front camera is 1.2 megapixels, and the rear camera is 5 megapixels, which are pretty good for a tablet at this priceToshiba Encore 2 Tablet BatteryIt lasts up to 10 hours, but in my daily use (browsing the web, checking email, playing games, and watching YouTube videos), Toshiba Encore 2 Tablet Batterylasted closer to 8 hours. If you really want to get more battery life, turn down the screen brightness, as it's set to the brightest setting from the factory. The tablet comes with Dolby Digital Plus, and two small speakers pointed toward the back of the tablet. It's easy to cover them with your fingers, which I find annoying, but headphones are usually a better option for listening to audio on a tablet anyway. Another thing that might put some people off is that there's no HDMI-out port to connect to a larger monitor.

The Encore 2 is designed primarily for Modern UI and apps, with the desktop if you really want. Since it's running Windows 8.1, you can put two Modern apps side by side and use them simultaneously. However, Modern UI does slow down if you have too many apps running at once. I guess the Atom processor can only handle so much multitasking.
You'll get your apps from the Windows Store, and since I find the best use for this tablet is media consumption, I'll load it up with video and music apps and a few games.
