The Yoga Slim 7x is an excellent midrange laptop with solid performance, good battery life, a sleek body, and a beautiful display. It also comes with a ton of Microsoft's AI effects, which feel a little underdeveloped at the moment. But if you're eager to get into the world of artificial intelligence, the Slim 7x is a good choice.

The battery life is over 8 hours, but it's nowhere near the all-day life Lenovo and Qualcomm claim. Also, because the Yoga Slim 7x is ARM-based, some apps won't run despite the Prism emulator. But more annoyingly, the AI ​​experience isn't much different from a regular laptop. For an AI-first laptop, I expected more than the typical image creation and video conferencing effects we see everywhere.

But for such a slim laptop, there are bound to be one or two sacrifices. For the Slim 7x, it's in the ports. The laptop only has three USB-C Gen 3 ports and a physical camera shutter switch. That's it. If you're still using wired headphones, this isn't the laptop for you, or it's time to invest in a pair of wireless headphones or earbuds.

 I was taken aback when the opposite happened on the Slim 7x. Don't get me wrong, I used the laptop every day and it lasted more than 10 hours. When running benchmarks on the first day, I expected less time. If you're going to give me a glossy display, go with OLED or Mini-LED. I want bright, vibrant colors to catch my eye. Lenovo gave me the Slim 7x's 14.5-inch, 2944 x 1840 OLED touchscreen. It looks simply stunning, and it has a 16:10 aspect ratio for more screen real estate. The 90Hz refresh rate makes for smoother viewing of movies or reading text. It also makes for a decent gaming experience.

The 1080p webcam works well. It had no problem reproducing the pink hue of the shirt I was wearing, with details sharp enough to show off the small beadwork. Zooming in on my face resulted in a blurry mosaic effect that wasn't pretty. Still, it's fine for video conferencing or quick selfies.

Don't expect much from the Slim 7x's 2W quad speakers (two tweeters, two woofers). Even with Dolby Atmos software, the top- and bottom-mounted stereo speakers don't have enough power to make an impact. The system struggled to reproduce the bass in Flau'jae's "Came Out A Beast" with brass, tinny trumpets, French horns, and barely-there high hats. Flau'jae and Lil Wanye both sang well, though.

Artificial intelligence isn't ready for close-ups

AI this, AI that. Call me indifferent. At the same time, I found some things useful, like removing a background in Adobe Photoshop and editing it in CapCut. I'm still not convinced this deserves an entire line of AI-first laptops. Take the Copilot+, for example. Cocreator lets you create AI-assisted pictures with text prompts, which is fun but unnecessary. Windows Studio Effects makes your video conferencing experience smoother, blurring or enhancing backgrounds and automatically framing to keep you in the shot.

I wish the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x was a regular Windows 11 laptop because it has a lot of advantages. First up is the design. It's very light and durable, and I love the color. Second, it has an OLED screen, and while I could do without the penless trackpad, it's a visual feast. Despite being a low-end Snapdragon X Elite chip, it performs impressively, with numbers comparable to Intel U-series laptops, making it ideal for most productivity tasks. If I get 10 hours of battery life on an Intel laptop, I'll be relatively satisfied.
